Gates Of Hell
In 1971, when Turkmenistan was under the Soviet Union, geologists speculated the ground beneath a certain area in the country may contain an oil reserve-- so they set out drilling. They ended up coming across a large pocket of methane gas. It was believed to be a health hazard so they had the bright idea of throwing in a grenade to set fire to it.
They figured it would burn out in a few weeks. But instead, the Gates of Hell was born and it has been blazing nonstop for the past fifty years. The hole is two hundred and thirty feet across and sixty-six feet deep. It’s filled with flames and molten mud. So far, nobody has been able to figure out how to extinguish it, but it's become a fascinating place of study ever since scientists found organisms living in the center!
Lake Natron
This deadly place in Tanzania is home to the lake that actually turns animals into stone. Simple contact with this lake can kill you. Lake Natron has extremely high alkalinity that can reach a pH of 12 or above! It can get deadly hot too with its average temperature often above a hundred and four Fahrenheit.
The glass-like surface of Lake Natron tricks birds into diving into it unknowingly. This kills them instantly and in the dry season the water recedes and the birds desiccate and turn to stone! This fascinating location is still home to some endemic animals and in the less salty parts of it near the edges, some fishes can also survive.
