The Darvaza Natural Gas Crater is a vast, fiery pit, measuring 200 feet wide and 65 feet deep. For the past 50 years, it’s been smoldering away in the middle of the Karakum desert, in the central Asian country of Turkmenistan. The crater was formed in the early 70s, when a natural gas pocket collapsed into a cavern. Nicknamed the ‘Gateway to Hell,’ it’s something of a tourist attraction. Yet, all that burning fossil fuel is not good for the environment.
The ending with the "Don't worry, there will still be plenty of ways to get to hell," is something I never thought I'd hear in a million years coming from a media company...

But if it’s a naturally existing crater burning natural gas, it can’t be THAT bad, right?
It was a natural formation the reason it wasn’t closed was how to and if the should of done wrong they could cause a explosion underground killing people trying to seal it now a days we have robots to handle such things Not to mention should we stop volcanoes they naturally regulate the earth just like lightning sometimes good intentions can cause more harm

I can just imagine them trying to smother it with a giant dome or something, only for someone to check to see if it’s still lit and cause a backdraft explosion that kills everyone around it and worsens the crater.
Why build some kind of dome if there is a nuclear bomb? This is no joke, the Soviets have used this method at least 3 times and it worked.
@@wederMaxim . . . Am I reading this right that the soviets have used the shockwave of nuclear bombs to blow out large fires like a candle?
@@Intrafacial86 No. The explosion filled up a crack in the ground, so that the gas stopped coming out.
@@wederMaxim ah okay, but, couldn’t they just use a conventional explosive - even if it has to be a really big one?
I learned about this as a kid and just assumed it would never stop lol, also won't it explode if we seal it off
Not if they use nitrogen Gas or something or they would just do it by gas pocket one by one
no air = no fire, no fire = no boom
The lack of oxygen after some time burning will extinguish the fire eventually. But the accumulation of those flammable gas in a long period of time inside the seal will probably act like a grenade if expose to fire after years of sealing. I'd say they should just let it be how it is now.

I'm pretty sure this was the same spot that I read about before. Someone decided decades ago it would make sense to light the gas on fire and it's literally been burning ever since. They assumed the fire would put out the gas maybe, not sure which genius thought that made sense.
the stupid Soviets , as it was mentioned in the video.
Wtf
Yes, after the collapse, the russians knew the volume of toxic gases pouring from the crate was alarming so they assumed if they set it on fire it would go out within a few weeks. Turns out, a crater that size doesn't hold a propane tank amount of gas. Genius Russians
What if they didn't set on fire? It could have released methane gas which is 25 times worse than CO2 also danger to the closer towns. This small flame is really really small compared to the fuel we burn to function as society we know today....

I wonder how much pollution it caused during those 50 YEARS.
Oh you fell for the spin. The lit the fire years ago to save the environment, now they say they will seal it up to save the environment. Lies, all lies.. they want the gas to sell instead of wasting it. Greed is behind most choices of men!
Way less than any other pollution source. The most pollution comes from construction.
Its good to seal it off, so the environment can be protected if something happens.
No
The natural gas will still seep to the surface -- adding carbon to the atmosphere, so they'd be better off letting it burn.
@Sean Francis Waters Lancaster I'm thinking that if it were profitable, they'd already have done that. Judging by the flames, that's very little gas. The pipelines would have to be so long.
@@rridderbusch518 it wouldn’t make a difference to keep it on or off assuming that the same amount of carbon will be released either way. But keeping it on fire would cause the carbon to be let out quicker which is worse than spreading it over a long period of time. Theoretically if it lasted forever then it would be best to try slowing the escape of gas so it doesn’t affect the environment as much, and as long as it doesn’t start to build up pressure and explode out I think it makes sense to block it off.
"Don't worry, there will still be plenty of ways to get to hell." Oh, I'm sure
Go on, say where the fire is.

I have never seen Inside edition be so savage and I love it! 😍
"this is bad for the environment" If anyone actually cared they'd have done something decades ago. It's not that hard.
You’d think someone like Red Adair or a fleet of borate bombers could handle it. If it was put out, the natural gas escaping could be its own problem. I’m obviously no expert but I’d be interested to hear your thoughts on the situation.

"Not so good for the environment" not so good for the "human" environment maybe. But things like this still happen. The world natural changes and will keep turning with or without your help. Volcanoes will burn. Natural gas pockets will burst. These disasters will always happen.
If you had the opportunity to stop a natural disaster from killing thousands of people, destroying eco systems, plants and animals ect. Would you not try to? Just because it's "natural" doesn't mean we should necessarily allow it to happen.
