Grateful Dead - Weather Report Suite (Winterland 10/18/74) (Official Live Video)
"Produced from the camera-original 16mm negative film, this beautiful and powerful rendition of the entire Weather Report Suite was the Dead's final performance of this Wake Of The Flood masterpiece. A couple of nights after this performance, the Dead packed it in as far as touring went for almost two years. When they returned to the road in the Summer of 1976, they brought with them the final part of the Suite, Let It Grow, but left the first two parts behind. Thankfully this performance was filmed during production of The Grateful Dead Movie, as well as recorded to 16-track analog tape." - David Lemieux

Dave! My dude! Always appreciate the work, but this video has been available for years, with better video quality, too. If you're gonna give us already released material, give it to us HD! Also, moar deep cuts!
I dunno... I'm hearing a little distortion on the sibilants.
This is awesome! Thanks Dave for all your hard work and for the always interesting TIGDH on Sirius.
I think it's perfect. Beautifully done! Thank you!!
I never understood why Weir shelved the two beginning parts to Weather Report Suite. It’s a beautiful piece of music.
This is one of my favorite Bobby tunes and they played it stunningly. The best thing I ever did in my life was to find Jerry and the boys.
I had a very profound trip to this song. Though it may not be so profound to some, but this song instilled in me the true knowledge that we are all the wind and rain, we come and go, we humans are like the seasons, the memory of us end in tumbled rhyme, harmony, and poetry, and then like the sands of the desert you're gone. Live well, love well, just Be. I love you all, peace and love to all my fellow deadheads, future deadheads, and all others on this magnificent blue orb
God bless you for this
Don't forget Billy Kreutzmann, holding down the fort by himself.
great expectations indeed my friend. It always boggles my mind that more Heads dont acknowledge just how absolutely fantastic he was during these years. I firmly believe, and stand by this statement very strongly, that Mickey would have never been capable of holding it down on his own the way Billy did. And fyi, I love Mickey too!
@@baileyfurio2327 I believe your statement too. Theres nothing like these years with only Billy. So jazzy but at any moment he can explode into rudiments that blow your socks off. As a drummer myself I try to play along but so often find myself just listening and wondering how he did it. Peace
@garyprince5 Cool man just gave a follow. I saw you go nova, I'm right around the corner at West Chester
@garyprince5 definitely. My buddy sent you a dm on insta about jamming
They do acknowledge it I've heard a lot of people talk about this being there favorite era because of that fact
2023. I'm forever young listening to the grateful dead.
Awesome, I have always thought of Bob & Jerry as painters - Bob with broad strokes and Jerry with the details.
Well said😁
Right. China Cat is an exception. Bob's picking on that song make it as addicting as any tune they do. When they both get going they feed on each other.
Also this is the Era of The great Thunder Bass of Phil Lesh and the Great Back Beat of Billy Kreutzmann
Amen
12:40 I love it. Bobby gives Jerry the stare and they are already on the same page. Doesn't even have to say a word. They had an unbelievable connection on stage.
Weather report shows just how brilliant Bobby is. From his intro to the greatest lyrics and Jerry and Donna as backup. I’m so glad l got to see this song in person and then it was gone. Check out how he plays the frets. Amazing.
sept 73 syracuse they had horns for this tune ....
Agreed. That solo guitar intro is both gorgeous and technically impressive.
Yes
"Listen to the thunder shout 'I am! I am! I am!' !!" Just intensely great songwriting in the Dead catalog!
"See the sun sparkle in the rain, silver beads passing to the sea...". 1973-74 was such a fertile period for GD songwriting.
@@mgsmallz yes but please add 70-72 from 70-74 there were 8 albums loaded with iconic tunes ...
Anther way to say God…I Am!
Their performances were so good with "The Wall", vocals were great and Phil"s bass is amazing. 1974 was a VERY good year indeed.
74’ man, good times: first Dead show that summer where I look around and realize you can walk up to about anybody and have a friendly chat. Peace and love ruled!!
Before the show while we were still filing in, the arena was about 25% full they ran white noise thru the wall. I'll never forget that experience. Every atom in my body vibrated. During intermission Ned Lagin played a synth solo. Synthesizers were a new concept back then. I remember just being blown away with the wall of sound.
Probably the best audio equipment ever utilized in a concert setting and that will ever be utilized again. The Dead single handedly changed the course of live performances forever. Without them we'd still be playing bands out of megaphones at Shea.
I aree. My first Dead show 1974 Madcity This song and Here come Sunshine....was anyone out there with me ... This lineup the wall the true Dead
1974 the best year for rock music
I will always maintain that this is one of the pinnacle Bob tunes. such a unique song. exudes that magical Grateful Dead energy.
I love how unique the Dead's catalogue is. There's nobody that does lyrics like these guys. Nobody has chord progressions like these guys. Nobody has their sound. When you hear a Dead song, you know it's the Dead.
Chills everytime. The godcheaux years were the absolute best in my opinion.
@August West come on bro the dead just had a knack for choosing great keyboardists for each decade lol one of rocks deadliest job only living is Tom and Bruce much love for godcheaux though. Shit even Jeff in dead and co is great and has his on style that you know it’s him playing
@@eloygarcia9752 they failed horribly with Vince - that was never a good fit
@Steve nah you trippin
Sometimes, Donna would get a bit too loud or overdo it. Otherwise, it was a decent era for the band. My favorite era was 69-71.
@Axess2084 lol she would not gonna lie but she jammed at times in music never stopped
In my opinion, the stretch from 73-74 is some of the best drumming that Billy ever offered. Culminating in these Winterland shows, he sounds amazing and drives each tune so well.
73-74 is my favorite. When they stated getting jazzy and discovering their own new sound. And Donna was just a chill background voice and not the wailing banshee she later became.
This is a Weir masterpiece IMHO I just wished he still played and sounded just like this
Can't help but love it✌️♥️🤗🎶!!!
He went from playing a casio in the 80s to his current glassy strat.
The Phil Lesh Era of 1972 through 1974 is completely fantastic
He can and will. The way he plays right now is him evolving and not trying to play the same shit as 40 years ago
Can you imagine if they busted Weather out in '89.. too bad it wasn't in their rotation as it's a true experience of Deadness..
I don't feel Bobby gets the respect he deserves as a guitar player. Him and Jerry together was just meant to be. They compliment each other so well
"Shall we call it by a name?" LONG LIVE THE GRATEFUL DEAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Maybe it is just me, but I really enjoy Jerry's smile at Donna before the "we'll see summer come again" line.
Loved that!
I just can't get enough of this show. Especially this Weather Report, and then some.
Playing and singing the entire suite live is not an easy thing to pull off. I have heard some versions that fell a tad short but they did a really nice job here. Great to see and hear this. Thank you!
Love the weather report on dick’s picks 12 (and everything else on there)!
Im here to say that there is no other reply here
I like hearing the whole thing. Shame they dropped it later.
The Genius that is The Grateful Dead. Just exactly perfect. A true art form. Insanely cool the Boys at the top of their game. GOD BLESS THE GRATEFUL DEAD 😎
Your same old friends, the wind and rain...
Wow, Bobby's singing is straight transcendent wisdom encapsulated on this rendition. IMHO this is one of his finest live vocal performances ever, and that's saying a lot.
As of late I've found myself coming back to this recording a lot recently and I think in part it's because of Bob's vocal work. Idk how to describe it. It's like he can command the music to his whim. It's so strange.
12:40 I love it. Bobby gives Jerry the stare and they are already on the same page. Doesn't even have to say a word. They had an unbelievable connection on stage.
Thats one thing I love about Bobby that Jerry never really did. The way Bobby conducts. Jerry-led jams like Dark Star or Sugaree are kinda Jerry doing his thing and the whole band listening to keep up. They're more free and loose. He's rightfully recognised for what he was, but Bobby-led jams (WRS, Other One, Sugar Magnolia) are more focused and the way he interacts with the rest of the band is awesome. He's always twisting around and looking at everyone else. Gesturing, making arm movements, telling the whole band where he wants to go next with his eyes and movements. Or he lets the band go wild, but then he refocuses them with a strong chord and they jump right back in to the main track. Its amazing to watch
@@jessefigueroa2682 Yeah. Bobby is like the conductor of an orchestra. Pretty neat.
Wake of the Flood. first dead album I bought. 1977, and "Bear's Choice"....
Please more 70's Dead !!! 🎵🎶
Best years for sure. Just Bill on drums killing it. Bobby tearing it up with Phil and Keith pushing Jerry to his limits. Complete masters of their craft.
Thanks to marketing of Wake of the Flood in the Bargain Bin for 99 cents, got turned on to this vinyl in high school and have loved it ever since!
Totally! I bought the cutout at the Harvard Coop for $1 in 1980!
This song from this show specifically, and a tab of good lsd, is what solidified my seat on the bus forever..... oh and Donna too :)))
A moment in time i will always remember
I'm diggin' those vocal harmonies from Jerry, Donna, and Phil. Donna looks amazing, BTW. 😉
Agree on donna....she was very easy on the eyes. I think she actually grew more attractive in the post-74 years.
Yeah she really does. I wasnt even alive when this happened but Keith was a lucky dude. Well, you know. Until he wasn't.
Smoking hot
@Jeff Rogers yeah, I think when she sounded good she, sounded really good. And when she sounded bad, she sounded really bad. 😉
no love for bobby? disappointed 🤭 he was super gorgeous for so long
I love This so much, a True Masterpiece of Art !!!!!! Weather Report Suite/Let It Grow !!!!!!!
Well said😁
Jerrys solos are always mind blowing
Jerrys solos are always blowing minds
That guitar intro by Weir is killer; his best guitar piece other than Sage & Spirit.
Ace's Masterpiece.
Darkness falls and seasons change (gonna happen every time)
"Same ole friends, the wind and rain" "What shall we say, shall we call it by a name..." It's always amazed me how every lyric strikes a different chord in different people in all their songs.
We'll see summer come again...
Just a beautiful song! Perfection, one of the Grateful Dead's best songs!
That's Weir kicking the tune off. Another underrated player.
one of the very best songs of all time
The band really came together nicely for Bob on this one. Nice to see that same dude in the front row knows all the words to this track, too.
especially because the song was very new
"Tripping dude" has a several legendary reactions in the Movie. Still think it's the same guy dancing at Kesey '72 gig.
@@josephsheehan7220 it was a year..wake of the flood was october 1973...see syracuse sept 73 with the horn section...
@@johnm3152 I believe the same guy is on Gragahellle Essen 1981 show too...
Love this song so much. Phil is great in this one.
Man...... My mother in law passed (more like mom) this past year and weather report suite came onto the Grateful Dead channel the next day. I will forever cherish this song like no other. Love ya Flo
Bobby did such a great job leading the band in this, its cool seeing him so focused and cue everyone for changes.
favorite dead song ever.
We are all just like a song that's born to soar the sky.
Truthhh hopefully
I have been listening to the movie soundtrack all week in my car, love this disc, the dark star is phenomenal, grate stuff!
George .S. Grateful Dead movie is the best
Trippychug 👍👍
Same old friends the wind and rain
This is the Grateful Dead! For first time listeners! They are playing real music! The best years! I got on the bus in "72" in San Fran. Love the way Jerry is bouncing around in space! This is the music I would play for the Alliens first!
The year I graduated from Golden High. The glory days. God how I miss them now....
I live in a high desert so I relate to this song especially like now with the seasons changing. I found this explanation of this song on Genius. "“Weather Report Suite” is composed in three pieces: the instrumental “Prelude,” composed by Weir sets the stage for the melancholic Part 1, and the somewhat epic grandeur of Part 2. Part 1 is a song co-written with Eric Andersen, a well-known singer-songwriter at the time who traveled across Canada with the Dead on the Festival Express Tour. The song is an address to seasonal changes in both nature and the singer’s mental state as he reflects on the coming-and-going of love. Loss, and hope that new love is on the horizon. Part 2 (“Let It Grow”) presents a completely different tone, building into a thundering crescendo. The theologian John Barlow, Part two’s author, invokes several doctrinal issues in the song as well as the earthly elements of water, earth, air, and fire while comparing human life to the significance of the totality."
Bob with such a beautiful song here, All that hippy goodness that makes for a Grateful Dead classic.
8:32 Wait, WHAT? Respectable live Dead harmonies with Donna? Astonishing!
I miss Winterland..
Magnificent
I've been dancing the circular track since I was 15
True musicianship!grateful sound quality
IMHO, the band at it's best; single drummer provides more space, Keith & Donna, Jerry engaged and in full capacity. They were all worn down and needed the break but I absolutely love this.
Agree I preferred the single drummer sound. But other things changed when Mickey returned. Bob switched guitars a few times, losing the Gibson ES 335 "piano" like sound. Jerry and Phil changed instruments. Bob's role seemed to change. The sound got more cluttered, it breathed less. The 1967-74 time was a peak.
Russ Haven well said
Very true. The reality is that 2 drummers is not necessary. It's cool at times, but other times it just clutters everything up.
@@ronschaffer5959 jerry referred to them as the popcorn machine.....
In my opinionated opinion, this was Bobby’s golden years on guitar. After this era Jerry’s guitar took dominance over Bobby. In their ’74 shows you could still hear Bobby as much as I love Jerry. He sort of stepped back after the 80's.
This is the first time I ever heard this song . 🔥🏆💯
and now you are a convert !!
Donna taking in the jam, love it 0:10:50
Right on, my ears are pleased. 70s true rock era decade.
WRS prelude is one of my favorite guitar melodies ever.
I needed this thank you so good
when bobby had tone... lol Great stuff! Guys were in the zone
What's wrong with his tone these days? Personally, I love guitars that sound like they are run through a tin can and string! So much texture...
Bobby's still got gone, he's simply 76 years old now and a bit raspy at times. How many musicians still play at 76+years?
chivachictoo Bobby is a babe, from start to finish!!! ♥️ But I think Phil has him beat!!! Jerry just has to stand there and his beauty radiates in all directions! I'm getting off track 😳. Morning comes here in Hawaii too🌴.But we follow the path down to the ocean while The Dead blares away from our house! It's the only way I can get people to be in a grateful mood! (Especially when they were just woken up 🤗). A few of these 🍄in the tea, and the day is better already. I saw my 1st show in 1 78 at Madison Garden! It changed my life forever (for the best). I miss you guys so much and wish you could please come to our Islands. I haven't seen a show, since we lost Jerry. I'm still waiting to get to see a show, it sure seems like it's getting to be that time! Fare There Well...
squarely in the middle of my favorite years...what a treat to have so many A+ quality vids and recordings of our favorite band in the whole wide world
Blows My Mind To This Day !
If it never ever ever gets better I'm gonna enjoy Some weather
My absolute favourite Dead song. Peak Bobby. Needs Donna to fly though.
Bravo!!!
There he is!
This I one of favorite tunes. If I one question it would be why stop? Beautiful!!
Great rendition, I always felt this was the best of the Dead. with Kieth & Donna...they were friends and family...I even kind of sort of knew them...the whole thing was just so close and cool...it was "down home"
If Krampus shows up at my house tonight, hopefully this will chill him out.
Krampus only takes bad kids...you should be fine. 😁
Thank you
How do u do
I love the glance Jerry gives Donna at 4: 52 after nailing a great harmony together, and her sweet sweet smile... She is really great in this clip.
Holy moly. What a moment.
These 16mm film prints seem to have a great deal of color depth, that just may not exist in the same way as todays camera technology. There is good playing and good sound here. Being a bit younger fan, I've never heard this music put in this context.
One of the best weather report suites. The song the lyrics brilliant Garcia Donna backup terrific Keith on the keyboards is so damn good. I’m a fan of the piano with the Dead. Garcia intro when the drums call him in sounds like a bird in flight. Why they cut it down to just Let it Grow beats me. I have had the good fortune to see one of my favorites in person.
Stunningly beautiful. Simply amazing
More Dead Movie outtakes, please!
Who in the hell would give this a thumbs down?🤦♂️
As the Simpson's famously said: "some people are just jerks"
August West or they just don’t like licorice😎👍
They tried to hit the like button but their fingers were fat and greasy, only possible explanation
eggman615 😂👍
George .S. Black licorice haters..
Masterpiece, merci beaucoup 😢❤
Solid
Simply beautiful music , timeless so thank you the Dead
overlooked masterpiece!
This is magnificent! Bobby's tour de force. Listen to the thunder shout...
This is why..there was nothing better than a dead show
That's magic
Chills.
Why’d they ever let the Prelude go. So fucking gorgeous. Still love Let It Grow of course.
Agreed. Arguably Weir's best guitar piece.
Love this. Thank you for saving it for posterity
Donna is fucking ON during this performance
One of my favorite Dead tunes. However, the 5-19-74 version is hands down the greatest of them all.
Haven't heard this in a while. But I hear it everymorning forbthe last 3 weeks. Amazing Stuff!
Simply....wonderful!! "My lover comes and spreads her wings"
Bob is a riff master!
Incredible. Love it. What a masterpiece. Love this era dead too.
There's a good chance I was at this show and ecstatic at hearing this.. my favorite.. 🥰
I enjoy this song just like I love Eyes of The World....it never disappoints.
I went to the Sunday show that weekend with my brothers and friends. The Dead were filming for the movie. There was a hells angels bike on the stage. Great show and crazy time.
thank you , peace
Happy Equinox everyone.
I’m so happy this is on here. Favorite version of this song, from my favorite run of shows.
Agreed in deed
Please, upload the full Winterland '74 concert. It was on youtube not long time ago.
I concur!!
