    • Respect. This is how I felt about Jon Stewart. You have a lot of enjoyable content you can watch from Trevor Noah. I will say a lot of it hits different when you're living through the times he's joking about bc he was a thought leader in our culture and society. But the comedy is golden and will stand the test of time-it will be funny whenever. If you can, you HAVE to watch him live. I didn't think it would be better than his TV segments but it definitely was 😂 Also if you haven't seen Hasan Minhaj's correspondents dinner speech in 2017 (the first one in the Trump era), you HAVE to.

      @africanodyssey4805@africanodyssey4805 Жыл бұрын
    • @@africanodyssey4805 What you are using is an example OF code-switching or circumstances in which code-switching play a major role, that is not the set (only) definition. Code-switching is a broad concept and is not ascribed to job applicants or the professional setting only. Somebody with a strong accent (eg: Irish/Scottish) may decide to alter their accent so it allows for both parties to be heard and communicate effectively allowing for smoother and easier conversation. As somebody that lives in an urban area where English is spoken a lot when I go back home to visit the more rural areas I will speak my home language (mother tongue) or perhaps not use as wide an English vocabulary as I would usually use. That right there is code-switching. I will not use a “white” accent because my black family will not be able to understand as clearly as if I used my “black” accent similarly to when I get back to the urban areas. I will not use my “black” accent as the white people & people of colour there may not hear me as clearly, hence Code-switching :)

    • When I talk to my sister in her Midwestern accent and my friends in their Texas accent I just slip into it naturally. It isnt phony. Yes, it was cultivated but now it make it so I dont here about my "put on" or weird accent." When you do it unconsciously to be accepted it's not phony or a trick. I think of it as being educated enough to fit in anywhere.

It is quite paradoxical that he criticises a one-sided view after having started it. He was the person who first completely ignored the "French", while the ambassador at least accepted the African roots. A colonial criticism with - "French Africa" is world champion! - would probably have provoked less criticism.

And he did it again in this section, mentioning how "black people celebrated how these Africans can become French". They didn't "become French", they were born in France, they were always French. The Ambassador did NOT make that same mistake, he didn't deny the players their African heritage, he only defended their French heritage. He even stated that their African background is now part of France's culture as well.

    • This subject is part of a cultural difference between France and Anglo-Saxon countries. The rationale behind french approach is to emphasize what people have in common i.e French nationality before what makes an individual unique in order to reduce the potential for discrimination (and also because during french colonial times it was seen as the superior status - by the french). France has a history of discrimination that reached an horrible apex when it shamefully participated in jewish deportation in WW II and afterward with the dismantling of the colonies. It was considered the best approach that in the eyes of the society you should be French first and whatever comunity you're from second (as an added benefit) to try and prevent to have french people turning on each other. That's why it grates over most french people's nerves when you reverse the order because, as Trevor stated, it's the attack path of right-wing/racist/xenophobic people and it comes with bad memories of old, not fully asleep, demons.

    • I think the segment is pretty weak. Like a lot of Trevor's arguments he is just building a weak straw-man. The french ambassador wasn't really saying they don't have a dual-identity, he was just saying that the French identity is not defined or restricted by origin, what the French ambassador was saying does not exclude the possibility of a dual-identity. In fact any such assumption is pretty absurd. Of course any French citizen will have several identities in a lot of different areas. The French ambassador took offense that Trevor's joke denied their French identity. But of course the other points Trevor raised are very important. It's definitely pretty hypocritical if a society only acknowledges and grants "proper" cultural identities to people from (colonial or other) minority populations if the person in question excels at something but will not acknowledge the identity if the person "fails" certain arbitrary cultural standards. However, there is also a deeper problem of societies and membership here in general. Where is the point where a certain person gets to be a member of a society and when will they lose that position? Is there a limit to what people can do to flaunt rules and expectations? Should people be excluded ever? What about a murderer? A serialkiller? Or someone who despises all conventions or rules of a society but who also has achieved a certain basic legal protection, for example simply by birth or any other way.

    • It's the diversity in our country. 11 official languages with various dialects and accents. At school you have all the accents and it rèally becomes a habit to address peopĺe in their own English accènt never mind lanģuage. On top of that we tend to speàk English to foreigners in their accent too. Many of us can do the accents, but Trevor excels in it.

My mom is half Dominican and half Portuguese and my dad is African American. I’m trilingual (fluent in English, Spanish & Portuguese). When I speak English my Spanish/Portuguese accent always comes out. Lol
