You can see just how far he's come just by the fact that he's capable of emotions again, at the start of this season he'd stand there getting sliced to bits and barely say a word, now he's able to get angry and yell at someone for taking up his time yet he's able to control that anger and not let it fly out of control like he used to in the past, he's taken all of his past experiences and put them together to become the person Thors knew he could be.

  • The attention to detail with characters' eyes in this anime is something else. The way they change as each character experiences more and more, as they get more inspired by whatever ideals they cling to, and the darkness that fills them whenever they seem to embody just that: darkness. But when Thorfinn calls out Grott in this scene, his gaze has this strength to it that we've only ever seen in characters like Thorkell and Askeladd. As this show makes very clear, strength isn't everything; what you apply that strength to is what matters. Why this scene is so chill-inducing for me is because we are seeing Thorfinn fully embrace the ideals of his father with the strength of Thorkell, and THAT is something worthy of the clear, silent inspiration of the Vikings around him.

  • There are just so many things I love about this scene, Throfinn’s rage finally vocalizing once more, yet this time in demand of protection instead of destruction, Snake’s portraying both concern and admiration towards Thorfinn, Einar’s understanding that Thorfinn had made up his mind thus asking Snake to not interfere but yet not being able to look him in the eye cause he didn’t even have the guts like Thorfinn did, Olmar’s admiration towards Thorfinn as he saw him fight without actually fighting, the silence of the Vikings showing respect and my oh my that last punch from Drott admitted admiration and defeat, all in just 2 minutes, this is both great writing and great animation, love to see it

  • What's so great about this scene that may go unnoticed is that Thorfinn switches back to a rough/Nordic/viking dialect and speech patterns, where as previously he had a polite, subservient way of speaking. All of the surrounding vikings recognize him as what he says to be after hearing this tone switch, which leaves them shocked.

  • This entire episode of Vinland Saga was just incredible. It's quite possibly the best episode I've seen of any anime in this entire spring season. Almost everything in this episode was great in my opinion. - The Vikings even Drott (who later apologised) having respect for Thorfinn as a true warrior. - Thorfinn finally saying the words his father Thors (and even us viewers) wanted him to say and believe in all this time. - Olmar admiring Thorfinn's determination and strength to fight for Ketil's farm without any violence. - Einar showing us the pain of an average person getting caught in the violence caused by ideals of people like Canute. - Canute's revealing his true ideals on how he will make his version of "Paradise" on earth.

Even more so than Naruto because Thorfin was on his own he killed so many and had to cope with his grief and regrets to discover the true meaning of being a warrior. This anime deserves all the respect.

  • Yeah, I was there. I was there when that lad got beaten to a pulp, and kept on standing. We were all laughing at the start, some farm hand coming to beg for the lives of those poor souls we planned to slaughter. I wanted to speak with a king. Ha, as if we would let some young man do it. So we made that bet, a bet we thought he had no way of winning. A hundred punches for an audience with the king and if he failed he would die. We all laughed, had fun, made bets. This kid would die, we all knew it so we thought nothing of it. Drott was no joke, and he was so mad before it started. There was no way he could lose. Thirty two was the count when he finally fell. We all that it was over and done, but I watched that young man stand back up. I watched as he looked at Drott and scolded him for stopping. That young man SCOLDED him! I was on the wrong side to see, but something happened to the men after that. Those that saw his face. They were much more quiet after that. I wish I had seen it. Forty. People were getting frustrated, that farm hand just wouldn't give up. Wouldn't beg for his life. More people were silent now, those that saw his face seemed more quiet, or more angry. Fifty. Anger was taking hold. Why wasn't he giving up? People were yelling at Drott. Yelling at him, thinking he was going easy on the lad. I was even one of them. I mean the lad had gotten half way there! There was no way he would survive the full hundred. Sixty. The anger had boiled by this point. Some were seething, other were cursing out Drott. I was cursing under my breath at this point. Drott was practically giving it up. Seventy. The anger had seemed to had fizzled out as fast as it came. One by one so many were falling silent. At this point I too had fallen silent. No, Drott had not been holding back. The silence only told, the sound of those blows. He was serious. Eighty. So many had gotten quiet. No one was talking loudly anymore. There were whispers but everyone was watching. I finally learned what the others had seen. What those had finally seen his face knew. I was stunned. Ninety. This was no farm hand. This wasn't someone who had spent their life on a farm. No one could have taken that many hits and just kept going like that. Everyone was silent. Everyone was giving this young man the respect he had earned. Even if he didn't make the full hundred. There was no denying what we were seeing. Hundred. This young man was a warrior. Braver then most I have met, and most I had met after. He had won. He hadn't raised his fist once, he hadn't struck back, or tried to defend himself. I don't know what that young man had seen, the battles he had been in or the people he had slaughtered but no one there could deny the conviction of that young man. Thorfinn, son of Thors. I will never forgot that young man. What he showed me that day. I wonder what he is doing now. What battle awaits him. Ah, I need to get going. I'm in charge of watch next. Hey lad, keep that chin up eh? Who knows, maybe you'll turn out brave like him one day.
