This video explains an aspect of Longarm Selection in RDRII story mode as to why Longarm Selections are lost. It's not explained anywhere in the game, but being aware of what is happening should reduce player frustration.

GAME PLAY NOTES: Although this is a different issue, what is not mentioned in the vid is that certain story missions will change the longarm selections at certain points, which can also frustrate players.
A trick I figured out to bypass any weapon deselection is by having the weapon wheel open as the player gets off their horse.

Embarrassingly, I didn't figure it out until after 3 years of obsessively playing. I just got in the habit like most do, of just making sure your longarms are selected just before you may need them. It's a weird behavior that makes sense in some ways (there was much stricter gun control in wild west settlements in the 19th century than there is today, i.e. the OK Corral shootout in Tombstone was over out-of-towners not wanting to follow the town's gun control rules) so leaving your big guns on your horse by default is plausible, unless you explicitly get them. But it would have been helpful to show a help notification for the first few times dismounting in settlements so players would know what the hell is going on. Oh, and BTW, I limit the KZhead notifications to just the long episodes, the shorter vids don't have notifications so I don't blow up people's notification feeds, causing them to unsubscribe.
