'Most people around the world would really miss having these horses representing Britain.'
Former Editor of Horse and Hound, Lucy Higginson, argues why horses should by kept in the military, as activists call for their removal following yesterday's incident in London.

But, this was a very rare occurrence. Don’t bring a vegan on for an objective opinion. Horses are bred to be ridden, and if they don’t want to be ridden, they let you know really quickly.

      @manuela9671@manuela967129 күн бұрын
    • @@manuela9671Hope your foal gets better, hope you’ve had the vet to him. The care and living conditions of the guards horses is second to none. Some of troops riding around have not had the riding experience that guards would have years ago much less last century. They haven’t lived in the saddle. In the 1800s there was no shortage of young men with plenty of riding experience. The other day a guard fell off when a horse jumped forward a few feet, the fellow needs more time in the saddle. So in the footage, obviously two guards fell off their horses and neither of them held or caught their mount. Those horses injured themselves once riderless. And the fact there was two of them probably made it worse, the horse with the cut was still moving well so hopefully it was superficial, they bleed like stuck pigs with even a small puncture wound. Animals are not human beings so if an animal is hurt we shouldn’t be indifferent however it should not be a cause of hysterical trauma as seeing a person getting injured. Most people who have not had much experience with using horses to work livestock or hunt are usually very sensitive to seeing a horse injured through accident, I’ve seen quite q few badly injured horses and many of them make a good recovery, despite the fact that they lost some blood, the ones that aren’t going to recover need to be put down quickly and humanely. Now let’s talk about the horse owners that don’t look after their horses properly, there are plenty of them, some of them keep old or ill horses alive that should be put down because they don’t have the guts to do the right (humane) thing by the animal, they’re cruel bastards. Let’s talk about the urban dwellers who don’t know anything about animals, horses but still want to have an opinion about what is or isn’t appropriate for a horse, they’re ignorant and become hysterical over a bit of blood, they’ll probably want horses banned from household cavalry. If everyone calms down and accepts that the reality is that generally these horses have a better life than many other horses do then we can move on.

  • Horses started being used for crowd control for a variety of reasons. First, they provide their riders with a mobile elevated platform from which the riders can easily coordinate action. Secondly, they are cushioned by nature, and can gently push people aside. They also command respect for their sheer size. It would be interesting to know how many of the police and Army horses on duty in London have been harmed in the performance of their duties over the years. It must be much less dangerous than mainstream racing, especially steeplechase, or showjumping.

First thing to look at is do they go through enough desensitizing training and only use quieter minded animals, such as pure Irish Draughts or draught breed crosses. Plus severe bits and spurs and that military style riding said hold the horse between bit and spur, which is a harsh method.

Stopping horses from working will mean they will not be bred. PETA will eventually succeed in destroying the human/ horse and human/dog etc. relationship. This kind of discussion really is based on an over emotional approach to animals rather than the a true understanding of the amazing capabilities that animals have to work alongside humans in all sorts of situations. Long live the working horse!

Our guards are being disrespected, along with the horses 🐎 outside our palace, no wonder they bite. Also, many slip-on on the cobles, potentially hurting horses and riders. How on earth did the horses cope on the real battlefields in WWI and all battles here and abroad, prior to that???? Remember the Knights of old - they too rode into battle on horseback. Can you imagine the noise, sound of gun fire, cannons, land-mines, explosions, men yelling. Yet the horses rarely bolted - I'd like to bet on that fact. Plus the horses were very well cared for, due to their importance. Albeit many got injured, or k*lled, as so did the humans.

  • As ever, the 'arguments' in favour of the continued human utilisation of other species boils down to human 'want' rather than genuine need. "But we like seeing them and we have done this for hundreds of years" doesn't really address whether or not it's appropriate to use animals for whatever purpose we happen to 'like'. Neither does feebly explaining that these horses are (rigorously) trained to be able to handle any situation human society throws at them. The process of 'training' a horse to be used as transport and to put up with human behaviour and demands is called "breaking" for a reason. Oh, and I speak as a former equestrian.

    • The horses arenot alwaystreated with great care , as someoneon another web site had proof that a guardsman had hit oneof the horseson ti's face twice , and spooked it.

  • The Militrary need to urgently review how they manage equines within the context of modern day challenges. The events earlier this week could have been avoided if a pre-ride reconesance excercise had taken place. This is a must in today's London. The Militrary need to work with the mounted police regarding safety in preparing horses for public duty and roadwork. Hi VIS(ability) PPE was missing from both horses and riders. This may have caught the eye of the construction workers prompting them to stop work whilst the troop past by. The police use PPE effectively for horse and rider. The army needs to realise that safety comes before traditional exercise dress. Following the British Horse Society Riding and Road Safety Guidelines for a start. An outcome from these events must be that Hi VIS PPE is mandatory for roadwork.

    • basically, the Horses are a legacy of the late Queen, she loved horses and would never have not have horses around her... so, horses should be around... at least in the mind of traditionalists... and I like them too. ( I might be critical of the Royals here and there, but would never criticise them for the horses issue... the horses just belong.)

  • She yapped on about chickens and cows last time she was on ,but didn't want to talk about the slaughter of unwanted pets ,I think her organisation carried out ? Should we use and train horses for sports and events, obsolutely ? But we should not use them to try and control rallies, funny they used a black and white horse to kettle the St. Georges Day rally ? Hope theres no connections to the rally. Nobody attempted to kill the horses and blame it on the people of the rally? The horses are well looked after ,unlike the unwanted pets that have been slaughtered because of the costs? Please fact-check and please double-check that these horses were not used in the St. Georges day rally ?

  • So what the argument seems to be is, we can use horses as expensive toys, for our personal pleasure, but, we can't use horses as tools! We can own horses, but not necessarily be financially able to afford them the proper care if required, and, as private owners, still ride our horses through streets, or on roads that can present any amount of danger, either to the animal, the rider, or a third party! Lots of privately owned horses are kept on their own, it can be a pitiful sight (im not saying abused), but they look bloody miserable, yet military and police horses are kept together in fairly large numbers, have had the very best training (as have their riders) and will be afforded the very best, no expense spared care, and feed. This whole debate could well spew over into the realms of private ownership if it continues. If 6ft troopers can't stop a horse, I'm pretty sure the same could be said about private owners! I suppose it will be military and police dogs next! Maybe even sniffer dogs! God forbid, we train them to spend their lives sniffing drugs, thats so cruel, isn't it? What would happen to the horses? Clearly they couldn't be trusted, after all, they have just utterly destroyed London and its inhabitants 😂 so it would be ridiculous to think they could be sold to joe public. Maybe dogfood? Possibly, if they were sold abroad. Sh*t happens, any harm that befell those horses was done by the horses. They were not mistreated, it was all self inflicted, they weren't ridden or driven into obstacles, they ran into them!

    • the Queen loved horses so much, we see it is the time after the late Queen, under the Queen, this would never have happened, I bet. edit: sorry, while the current Queen loves horses too as far as I know, but it is not the same as with the late Queen, she really looked after all her horses and made sure they were fine, not like this incident which shows that they are clearly not as fine as before and not looked after as before.

  • Ok we stop everyone riding horses, who is going to look after all these retired horses, in fields doing nothing? Because if you stop everyone riding horses, or using horses to pull carriages etc. All what is going to happen, are tens of hundreds or tens of thousands of horse being put down, by their owners. All because a few people, want the Army and others to stop riding horses. What next stop children from riding ponies too, or riding donkey's at the seaside next as well? My partner is ex Royal Artillery, anyone try going after the King's Troop Royal Artillery Horses, everyone serving in and former members of the Artillery, would be up in arms about it! It not just the Life Guards and the Blues and Royals, who have military horse, there are other units who have military horses too,! Also what the Ponies and Horses, who are Regiment Pets and/or Mascots too, is the Army going expected to give these up as well? Some people need to either grow up, or get off their high horses, so to speak!
