You have to understand that back than there was less prize and trophies and awards than today. Today you step onto the field and you receive an award 🤷🏻♂️ you score more than 100 goals and you get an award but back in Maradona time fifa did not have the money they have today so the awards were less. If Maradona played in 2022 he probably would have had more trophies with the same amount of games played in 1990 🤷🏻♂️

I think skill-wise these two are identical, but different paths. Messi was likely recruited searching for a Maradona. Maradona made some horrible choices in life. Maradona was amazing and the argument that Messi played for better teams and therefore he performed better is BS. He was hired by the best, because he was the best. In my opinion Messi is the better version of Maradona, but I don't think Messi has more skills than Maradona or vice versa.

Maybe Messi had better development in his carreer due to the teams or couches he played with/under. But the result is totally different, Messi is head and shoulders when it comes to assists and goals, creating chances etc. The only area where they are somehow even is dribling.

Also in many crucial CL Quarters and Copa finals we can see he fails. Diego was a complete different monster. Even before Messi came along, there were many many players who had better numbers to stack up against Maradona. Even when Maradona played there were Platini and Van Basten, who had each won 3 ballon d'ors, for example, and Maradona had none. Maradona had not scored as many goals as Josef Bican had not won as many world cups as Pele or even Meazza and so on. Yet none of the players I have mentioned have had the impact Maradona had on the game. (Pele the exception) And he did it all with a rolled bill in his nose, 10000s of teats in his hands, a bottle of booze in his mouth, boots of defending butchers cracking his bones, a cortisone syringe shoved in his butt and a lot, lot, lot more. He came from the scum of the earth, people who dwelled in absolute poverty. People who had dirt as their precious rugs and sky as their roof. Who did not eat properly, no luxuries at all. He did not receive special medical attention to make him grow better. He defied the steep, steep odds to become deified. tackles and fouls those respective players suffered. I think skill-wise these two are identical, but different paths. Messi was likely recruited searching for a Maradona. Maradona made some horrible choices in life. Maradona was amazing and the argument that Messi played for better teams and therefore he performed better is BS. He was hired by the best, because he was the best. In my opinion Messi is the better version of Maradona, but I don't think Messi has more skills than Maradona or vice versa.
Maybe Messi had better development in his carreer due to the teams or couches he played with/under. But the result is totally different, Messi is head and shoulders when it comes to assists and goals, creating chances etc. The only area where they are somehow even is dribling.
