    • Well the whole show, the host and even the guests in this case are pretty much anti-matter for Oliver and people who are fans of Oliver that like his intelligence, his self-effacing style, and his impatience with fluff. This is perilously close to something he would parody on his show, and he finds himself sitting in the actual set. By the end the host is literally holding up his cards and reading from them like he is running out of ideas, and NOT in an ironic way. What's not to hate?

  • Need to be clear on comment made about surrogacy being illegal in Australia. Altruistic surrogacy is not illegal, but commercial surrogacy is. The problems with commercial surrogacy are very evident, the commodification of women’s bodies, economic and power imbalances in the dynamic. The comments made show unseen privilege and bias.

    • Except I bet you don’t apply this to most forms of labor. Most labor is commodifying bodies within capitalism, with a big economic power imbalance. But you support a law that punishes women for trying to survive in that system. You could just as easily say sperm donorship is commodifying men’s bodies. Of course it’s more labor intensive to go through pregnancy, which is all the more reason they should be laid for it. Why would a woman risk their job and livelihood to go through pregnancy for something she and her family will gain nothing from no matter how altruistic they are. This just punishes women.

    • So true, instead just make sure to pass a bunch of laws where she can't control her own body or make choices about it. That's so much better. If a person wants to be a surrogate for another person, then they should be allowed to. The money is to compensate for the extreme stress that pregnancy puts on a woman's body. The money is to compensate for the risk they are taking for someone else. Pregnancy and birth can be fatal to a mother and yes, she ought to be given something for doing something so important. You, as a man, have nothing to say here, as your life isn't at risk during pregnancy or childbirth.

  • Interesting listening to Rebel talking about her transition from straight to "out". I personally am the nightmare middle aged white straight male... BUT... I love using the line "I don't THINK I'm straight, I KNOW I am straight" to any homophobe in a bar - because then I get to tell them the story of how at one point I was curious.... and tried out a few very different relationships. Oh yes, I have been on top, underneath, on the side and in the middle. I ended a straight boring white guy, but had some fun on the way. I don't think people experiment enough, and really do think that can be extremely damaging long-term. In my case I was mistaking long haired guys for girls... it started like that. But a few tussles in the hay later.... guess what? All out of my system a confirmed chick magnet... OK... Single and alone, but at least I know what partner I want! Seriously, if you have feelings you're not sure about... try them out. In my case I went full circle, and decided I was straight (can still appreciate a builder though!) but my attraction is to women. But I had to experiment to confirm that. Go to a town far away from anyone you might accidently know - and live a different life for a few nights. If it takes, it's yours. If not... well, thats what happened to me.... back to being rejected by the receptionist and feeling awkward talking to my sexy boss.... The best line you can have is one of two: "I don't think I am Straight, I Know I am Straight" or "I don't think I am Gay, I know I am Gay"..... both make it evident that you have played on the other side of the fence. And that annoys bullies... A lot.

  • Andy's casual attitude to surrogacy is so gross. Unpaid surrogacy is one thing, but paid surrogacy is simply the further commodification of women's bodies. Rich people like Andy are renting the bodies of poorer women to carry their children. It raises so many ethical questions, that none of them seem concerned by, so strong is their desire to become parents. Even egg donation can be hugely problematic, because it carries the risks of overstimulated ovaries (potentially fatal), early menopause and infertility for the donors, who are typically 20-something women who have not yet had kids of their own. It shows that even in artificial procreation, the highest cost is paid by women, and none of these rich celebrities seem to care. Then there's the second ethical problem of deliberately creating a bond between a baby and the woman carrying them, and then deliberately breaking that bond. It should not be considered controversial to be against surrogacy or to consider it bad for woman and children. It's a totally 'parent-centric' approach to having children, and to my mind, that in itself makes the people involved unsuitable for parenthood, a role that requires a mostly 'child-centric' approach.

His kids are with the nanny 90 percent of the time as well. It’s his way to cheat the system, because he wouldn’t be allowed to adopt since he’s never around and has no partner.

      @JS-hn5ld@JS-hn5ld Жыл бұрын
    • @imalwaysright What an ignorant, prejudiced, mistaken judgement of me you've made. If you get 'religious vibes' from my post, you're senses are waaaay off, because I'm not remotely religious. I literally have no religion and am a borderline atheist, who is actually pretty liberal - I'm pro-choice on abortion, for example, because I don't believe that any woman or girl should be forced to carry another person against their will. The vibes I'm ACTUALLY giving off are 'cares about the welfare of women and children and puts that above the selfish desires of rich people to become parents'. Perhaps you should re-read my original post and this time actually take in what I said. There's nothing religious about it - I made no reference to 'sins' or 'God'. My concerns about surrogacy are not religious, they're ETHICAL - learn the difference. Just because we CAN do things scientifically doesn't mean we SHOULD. We could probably clone humans, for example, but so far, no country that we know of has permitted this, because it's deemed UNETHICAL. There are ethical questions about surrogacy that I've noticed a lot of people who use it don't seem to consider. Their approach to it is pretty selfish (and that's no surprise - the drive to have children can make people terribly selfish - it causes some women to steal other people's babies, for goodness sake!). Thus, their judgment about it can be way off. They ask themselves whether they feel comfortable with a stranger carrying their child, but I've never heard them discuss the ethics of further commodifying women's bodies, as they're doing. In that sense, surrogacy is not that different from prostitution, and it's a lot more invasive. And once again, it's mostly the bodies of poorer women being used, especially outside the US. Just ask the foreign couples who used Ukrainian women to carry their babies and then couldn't get to them after Russia invaded. Check your own ethics if you see no problem with this. 'I'm always right' is an ironic choice of username, because this time you're patently WRONG.

    • Very valid points. I especially appreciate your comment on the ‘parent-centric’ attitude towards having children. As a kinship guardian to a family member, my or their parents desires should never ever come above the needs of the child. And when parenthood is rooted simply in the desire to have a baby we end up with children who are abused, neglected or disowned because they couldn’t fit into the mold their parents dreamt up before they existed.
