When black belts started popping up rather indiscriminately in Brazil many years ago, Helio Gracie began wearing a blue belt in protest. I don't know if the belt Royce is wearing here has anything to do with that but it's one explanation.

I trained with Royce a couple years ago, and it is true he wears the Navy belt because he said there is no one else to promote him since his father Helio is gone. So basically he is carrying on his fathers legacy with the navy belt.

Royce Gracie is my favorite all time fighter. Yes there is a lot of great fighters, but Royce is the best in my opinion.
