The DC Extended Universe. What was once seen as a potential rival to the massively successful Marvel Cinematic Universe, is now being abandoned after 16 movies and 1 show spanning a 10 year life time. Movies in general, have to earn 2 and a half times their budget to break even. The DCEU’s box office has been erratic to say the least, so throughout this documentary you will see some movies easily earn a profit and others failing to break even. This documentary highlights the 8 key moments of the DCEU. So join me today on this journey as we explore the downfall of the DCEU.

  • I genuinely feel so bad for Henry Cavill. The guy seems like a genuine, wholesome person who is passionate about his roles and gives everything he has into them. Yet shady studio executives keep screwing him over because they don’t know what they’re doing. First Superman, then Geralt from the Witcher. Two roles Henry absolutely loved and had to leave behind because of corporate scum

It was such a breath of fresh air when Diana defeated the guy she thought was Ares and expected all the the bad guys to stop, but they didn't, and Steve telling her that sometimes bad people are just bad. Also the ending makes no sense in a few contexts of the overall direction of the Snyderverse. She doesn't walk away from mankind AT ALL! So WTF is with her behavior in Metropolis when Doomsday arrives? And not to mention where was this bitch during WW2 and all the other wars if she loves mankind in the end and empowered by love; jumping to action in London at the sound of sirens?

  • The DCEU failed because it came from a place of desperation rather than inspiration. Marvel studios earned its cinematic universe because it took years to build it up piece by piece with standalone films introducing the major characters before bringing them together in the first big crossover (The Avengers). DC/WB didn't have the patience to carry that out, and were more interested in catching up to their competitor as quickly as possible. To quote a comment I once read, "going from Man of Steel to Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice is like going from Iron Man 1 directly into Captain America: Civil War." The final result was a cinematic universe that didn't feel as fleshed out or coherent as its competitor, especially with reactionary moves like trying to abandon Snyder's darker and more brooding tone in favor of emulating Marvel's lightheartedness. The biggest lesson to be learned in this is to walk before you can run.

  • They tried to recreate the success of the MCU without acknowledging what made the MCU successful. Instead of creating a clear and concise plan for the first few years of storytelling, they rushed into things. And when that didn't work, they just decided to do the cinematic equivalent of throwing feces at the wall to see what stuck. And what makes it even more embarrassing is that the DCEU started with one studio owning the rights to the entire DC catalog, yet couldn't come close to measuring up to the success of the MCU, which for most of its run so far had the rights to less than half of their characters.

  • Another thing you could have added in the beginning was where Man of Steel came from. It could be titled Origin of a New Universe “In 2008, after the Dark Knight was released in theaters, Christopher Nolan and David S. Goyer were in the process of writing the Dark Knight Rises. But during that time, they were hit with a writer’s block, leaving them unable to continue working on the script. Therefore, Nolan suggested to Goyer and everyone else to take a week off. During that week David Goyer decided to come up with an idea for a Superman movie. His idea for the Superman would be that Superman arriving in the modern world would be the biggest event in human history. Afterwards, he would show Nolan who would then take the pitch to Warner Bros. Thus, a new Superman movie was greenlit, with Nolan recommending Zack Snyder as the director. Soon enough, Snyder was hired as the director for this Superman movie in 2010. He would get to work on bringing the Superman back to the big screen, with the name of the film being titled Man of Steel.

  • DC has been its own worst enemy in the translation of the comic books to the big screen. They let Marvel get years ahead of them; they cast different actors to play the same characters in different movies undermining any sense of continuity or connectivity by the fans; they tried too quickly to create an analogous response to the MCU not recognizing the decades of work that Marvel put into making that leap. DC had a challenge to begin with where Marvel had a tradition in its source comic book material of plots where complex heroes--not villains--were central to the stories, which also lent to cultivating real fans; DC, on the other hand, had comic stories that were much more dependent on the villains. it is why the Rogues Galleries of Batman, Superman, and the Flash are so well known compared to those of Marvel Heroes. The first question anyone asks about a DC movie is: "who's the bad guy?" That's because DC has cultivated its stories around the heroes foiling them as opposed to struggling with their own demons which Marvel is soooo good at putting its heroes through. Stan Lee left a great legacy for screenwriters to pick up. Ironically, it was the DC Animated series under Bruce Timm, where the greatest transition for DC was made. And it was a formula very similar to what worked for MCU live movies: take your time; develop the characters; develop their relationships; let conflicts be real and let some business stay unfinished. The vocal talents used in the DC animated world were brilliant as well. It is not a coincidence that the actor with the longest continuity for a DC character was Kevin Conroy's Batman. It's sad that WB never learned a thing from DC's strongest franchise to help its weakest.

  • They've been so down from the very beginning, I don't know if we can call that a fall. I loved Man Of Steel, but the arguments against it back then were fairly valid: cringe writing and boring outside the fights. People blame WB, but they intervened BECAUSE of the bad reception of Snyder's movies. So there was already something wrong before the production started "tweaking" the universe. In fact, even its reason for existing led it to its doom. WB saw the success of Avengers and how much people wanted Justice League live action. So they said "it's time, NOW!" and hurried... way too much. BvS tries to introduce way too much at once: the ultimate fight of B vs S, the Justice League, Doomsday, Lex Luthor and the End of the World. Despite being two years after the FIRST movie of this extended universe. We _should_ have had a movie on Lex, a movie on Batman, a movie on Batman v Superman, a movie on Doomsday... And that's on Snyder as much as on Warner Bros. Granted though, the first movies don't suck as much as Aquaman, Wonder Woman, their sequels, The Flash...

    • @@Slask7 On another note, I have watched the animated movie Justice League: War. It's extremely similar to the DCEU JL movie.... but is actually so good to watch! The reason? They didn't cram 10000 things into the movie. Batman fights a Parademon, it turns out to be an emissary, Darkseid tries to invade the Earth, the greatest super-heroes of the world meet to counter him, Cyborg fused with a Motherbox, it turns out to be the key to repelling the Parademons, then they officially form the Super-hero group, it's the Dawn of Justice, the end. No need for 4 hours to tell that. This is the very first movie of a timeline (the DCAMU), they actually didn't need many movies to introduce everything before a JL movie. But that's because they cleverly spread the amount of story for each movie afterwards. I've watched a few more movies of the DCAMU, and the way certain movies are focused on different groups of characters is very good!

  • Great video, I just have two points to make in addition to what has already been well discussed - 1) Revisionism makes Synder a hero, but it’s important to remember that his original work in MoS and BvS too had their share of detractors - mostly for being too dark and faithful to the comics. As a result a lot of the casual movie goers felt out of place as they didn’t understand and enjoy the comic book references. This is particularly where the MCU did very well in Phases 1 and 2, by turning obscure comic book heroes into household names by just making the films more accessible to everyone. 2) A lot of the DCEU’s diminishing returns also tallies with an overall superhero fatigue in the audience - which is why even the MCU off late has been struggling horribly. And like it or not, the ‘multiverse’ concept that both Marvel and DC have adopted seem cool in terms of fan service initially - by bringing in different iterations of popular characters on screen at the same time - but have also turned out to be horribly confusing and bloated, simply exhausting the bulk of the casual viewers. In general, people are tired of superheroes. That only makes it lamentable that WB did not fully cash in on the superhero craze when it was at its peak. Nothing Gunn does now can ever match up to the original hype going into BvS.

  • Really great video, man. Snyder is so, so, SO very overrated. Yet another "auteur" who is more in love with himself and his grand vision than he is interested in creating a product for the little people. And WB did nothing to help. It was all doomed from the beginning. Suicide Squad was the death knell, the final nail in a coffin that DC/WB execs didn't know it was already buried in. Every movie released after was like sticking a finger in the dyke while the flood was happening all around. Everyone blamed Whedon for what happened with Justice League, just as people blamed Peter Jackson for The Hobbit clusterf*ck, when in both cases all the blame rests with the suits at the studios who don't have a single clue what they're doing.

  • It’s hard to be anything but sad when we get to the part where Henry had to publicly rescind his post about returning as Superman. It remains the reason why I have no interest in Superman Legacy or James Gunn’s DCU. But that’s just me. I’m delighted for those who are looking forward to it and I’ll try to watch it with an open mind and heart in 2025.

  • Part of the reason why Henry Cavill couldn't appear in anymore DC films after Justice League was because of his deal with Netflix in 2018, which prohibited him from doing other films outside of Netflix between 4 to 5 years, all so he could do the Witcher series (since he is a fan of the books and the games). After 2018, the only projects that Cavill did were Enola Holmes and The Witcher. The only exception to the rule was the Snyder Cut, which apparently was in Cavill's contract.

  • For me Batman v Superman killed the DCEU. I will always remember how stupid the whole "wait your mom is martha too? Did we just become best friends?". It was so unbeleivably stupid. Superman was always the upbeat, optimistic hero, and the whole movie is just Superman being a dick until he realizes batman's mom is also named martha.

  • List of things the DCEU did right: 1. Hiring Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck, Gal Gadot, and Jason Mamoa List of things they did wrong: Literally everything else. Zack Snyder is an idiot. And we know that is true because only an idiot would allow Jesse Eisenberg to do THAT for 3 hours, make Superman gloomy, and make Batman an unabashed serial killer. Brilliant documentary, beautifully made. You deserve many more subs, mate.

    • Not gonna argue the lex thing, it can be perceived either way. But Superman finds his place in the world, the journey is incredibly good, he's literally battling himself at every turn, that makes him grounded and not 1 dimensional. Batman we see isn't a new batman, it's a 20year veteran who lost his robin. He is mad pissed. Towards the end of bvs he realises it, to me that's character growth. To each their own I guess

  • I enjoy how context is given to the DCEU situation. How Snyders original ideas were “accelerated” or simply just rushed by the studio. Studio interference and the vocal minority of agenda driven anti-Snyder media is what destroyed the DCEU. The box office’s were consistently growing, and WB disregarded all that to start making Harley Quinn, Shazam 1+2, a horrible WW sequel and the awful Flash movie. The only highlights after Aquaman were ZSJL and Black Adam and the studio disregarded that success in favor of undercutting movies for a few years until James Gunn makes his DCU movie. This is a horrible way to run a movie studio.

    • Listen... Snyder's idea of killing off Superman in the SECOND movie. Making BvS before a solo batman movie, and teasing an evil superman, originally leading to Bruce Wayne getting with Lois and having a baby is absolutely horrendous. Warner Bros made some base decisions but so did Snyder. Snyder did with the DC characters what Rian Johnson did with Luke Skywalker. He took the characters for their aesthetics without a care for who they are and made what he wanted to make.

  • Great work Man!....This documentary made so many emotions pop up inside my heart....right from the announcement of Dawn Of Justice....to the last movie we witnessed being released under DCEU's title- Aquaman.....life really changed a lot in these 10 or 11 yrs and so did the DCEU..and u could see it in not only the box office nos but also the no of views that DC movie trailers used to get before...96M...78M..literally and these nos actually tell us how many people around the globe were excited at that time for DC movies....Had these fuckin bastards at WB not messed with the Directors' vision...and their creative freewill....we DC fans or the CBM fans in general would have witnessed a fantastic CBM universe....but whatever is destined..happens..and personally after watching your documentary ..it feels like since the day of inception of DCEU..it was destined to fail because if u think...it is unusual that a franchise repeatedly gets stuck in some kind of issues....be it Studio interference, low box office nos & critic score..leading to reshoots.....actors getting stuck in controversies....being abused on set.....directors getting changed.....and what not........but after all of this....speaking for myself as a DC fan, I'll still go watch the movies under the James Gunn' DCU......who knows..they might work and resonate with even more people this time.......at the end we are Superman's fans....and the S on his chest says........HOPE🙌...Cheers!

  • I understand all the blame on WB executives and I absolutely agree with it. However, there’s one thing Snyder is solely to blame: The Dark Knight Returns and The Death of Superman should’ve never been crammed into one single film. That was disrespectful to the source material and comic book fans. Batman V Superman is atrocious in its vision NOT because of rewrites or trimming. We should’ve gotten at least a Man of Steel trilogy before bringing Bats to face off. Even Batfleck deserved his own film, maybe two before that. Man of Steel was great and deserved a proper sequel.
