I do believe that Dominated Mind’s White’s design is based on Stanley Kubrick’s A Clockwork Orange’s “droogs” style. Especially the main character, Alex DeLarge, who is also using a cane. Maybe that is why it was not published in the west or there is no remake.
One of the greatest franchises ever
Oh, hey Chaos!
Exactly!
Mark of the Wolves is absolutely the SFIII of the Fatal Fury series. Including the gameplay systems, speed, and definitely the next level pixel art.
Agreed. If we want more comparisons with Street Fighter: _Fatal Fury Special_ = _Super Street Fighter 2_ _Real Bout Fatal Fury Special_ and _2_ = _Street Fighter Alpha 2_ and _3_ _Fatal Fury: Wild Ambition_ = _Street Fighter EX2_ _Garou: Mark of the Wolves_ = _Street Fighter 3: Third Strike_ _Neo Geo Battle Colliseum_ = _Capcom Fighting Evolution_ And if you include KoF into that list, the similarities become even more apparent. I'd say _The King of Fighters XV_ is equal to _Street Fighter 5: Champion Edition._
@@BknMoonStudios thank you for the list! I played only some of the Fatal Fury games and Street Fighter games. If I want to play one game but cant find it, I will look for another game similar to it on your list.

Just to mention it, due to Brazil being heavily influenced by piracy during the PSX era, Real Bout Dominated Mind was kinda the norm. Was so engraved with players around here that when I tried Real Bout 2 on PS2 I was bummed that Final Impacts were absent... Anyway Matt, thank you. Holy shit.
I was gonna say, pirated games were very common here in Brazil and weren't limited to US English releases. I played many a Japanese PS1 games like that back in the day, I played much more Soul Edge than Soul Blade for example. There's even a documentary showing how piracy actually made gaming here possible.
Hey, good to see fellow brazilian fans here! xD - V.D.
Piracy was also the norm here in the Philippines, up to the PSP and PS2 era.

God Hand video, followed up a day later with a feature length look back at Fatal Fury. Nooooice haha, nothin' but a good thang.

Amazing video, your retrospectives are some of my favorite things to go back and binge through. Thanks so much for the shout out.
Hy
Thorgi truly a master of his craft.
This fantastic retrospective was certainly *_OUT of BOUNDS._*
Terry is my favorite fighting game character of all time. His moveset, story, characterization, and AMAZING voice work are all absolutely perfect. I've been getting my son into FF and KoF and this video really helped bring my love for the character and the series home for him. Awesome video Matt, thank you.
Hell of a retrospective. As far as the Canon goes, Fatal Fury and Art of Fighting were connected, AoF 1 and 2 taking place about 10 years before FF (AoF2's secret ending and boss fight against young Geese taking place before he murders Jeff Bogard) while KoF is an alternate universe, hence why Geese never died and AoF and FF characters are of similar age groups, etc.
Fun Facts:---Kim Kaphwan is the FIRST Korean fighting game character! Fatal Fury 2 was the first videogame in history to have “Jiggle Physics” with Mai Shiranui’s victory animation!
I hope he returns as DLC
@@Pewpewpew182 Nope, Desperation attacks were first introduce in Art of Fighting!
Wubba, wubba. You're in the pink today, Matt! But seriously, Fatal Fury is one of my all-time favorite series. I played and reviewed all of the game years ago, and Garou is still one of games I still play regularly. So much fun, so much lore, so many memories... Thanks for the awesome video!
Soooooo… new Mark of the Wolves game got green lit!
Geese didn't fake his death! He actually had 1 of the 3 Scrolls the Brothers Jin want. The scroll made him somewhat invulnerable, which explains how he survived the fall in FF1.
You'd think after an experience like that he'd want to hold on to it. I always liked the idea that he saved himself by inventing the Shippuuken on the spot as he fell, and using it to stop his descent.
@@AirLancer sorry, man. That was a joke amongst fans. Like I said, the scroll he had that helped him survive the fall, was called the Scroll of the Phoenix. All it did was speed up his recovery, not becoming invulnerable. Have to correct myself in that last comment. By the way, he should hold on to the scroll longer, but Matt did say Geese tore up all 3 Scrolls of the Jin, so that no one would get a leg up on him. Some things are better in hindsight, which pretty much sucks.
@@manson2178 Isn't the twist in 3 that the scrolls don't actually have any powers, and the Jin brothers did all of that for nothing? I think Geese did survive on his own and pretended to be dead until 3, where he got the scrolls and burned them because he still believed they had powers and could be used by someone else to oppose him.
@@NikiYKNThe scrolls were real but when Geese obtained the three of them he discovers the only capable of use them are the Chonrei brothers
Just a few notes: There were only 3 scrolls. One with Master Tung (Geese got it), one with Krauser and one with the Jin twins. And Rock mother's name is Marie. Thanks for the video! ^^

I still remember when I played Fatal Fury for the first time: I was 10-11 years old and I saw in the arcade next to SF Champion edition, this protagonist who wore an "orange" cap and wore sneakers ... I fell in love with the game in less than 1 minute. It's my favorite game franchise, and I'm excited to see you do such a thorough review. I will enjoy it like when I saw Fata Fury for the first time: as a 10 year old boy having his snack.
There is going to be another Fatal Fury game. Sequel, Garou Mark of the Wolves 2 got announced a week ago during EVO 2022. Officially greenlit to be in development at SNK.
The Fatal Fury games take place in an alternate timelime from the KOF games. (Same with Art of Fighting) That's why Geese is alive in the King of Fighters games
He was only playable in like 3 of them though.
Here after the announcement of a new Fatal Fury at EVO...amazing how far the series has come.
The fatal fury animes are still timeless classics for me
"This video is unavailable on this device" What on earth did you all watch? It sounds amazing
Yeah, same here...
Rewatching this because A NEW GAROU WAS GREENLIT BABY
52:08 time to get a new carpet.
I learned to sew to make a Terry jacket 😆. My introduction to Fatal Fury was during scifi's anime week hosted by Apollo Smile. The next day I called my local Game stop (before they blew) to see if they had anything. They had 1 copy of Wild ambition (a time where you took what you could get) and played that game till the disc burned.
Despite my love for Street Fighter 2, I always found Fatal Fury to be more fascinating to look at
GET SERIOUS!!! This video is awesome!! Love Fatal Fury!!!
I've somehow got to incorporate, "Wubba, wubba! I'm in the pink today, boy!", into my daily speech lol
Fatal Fury arcade machines were very popular around here in Brazil... I miss this... Thank you for this love letter to the series Matt! Speaking of 'dormant' series, I also would love to know what happened to Time Splitters....Those were some of the most fun and content packed FPSs I ever had the opportunity to check...
14:56. I almost spilled my entire bottle of water at the screen. Wubba wubba, I was not prepared for it, today. xD Here in Brazil we played a lot of FF Special, KoFs and Garou. What an awesome video.
I remember playing Fatal Fury in Alabama years ago when SNK was still a household name in North America. I don't know why SNK's presence faded from North America, but I can say they were around back then.
@@Rotostorm331 Capcom really did it's job in advertising and release of games in N.A.. I believe. KoF and other titles are very famous in Central and South America though. KoF is still popular among fighting game fans, in Brazil. We're hoping KoF XV becomes a great game, too.
@@MuJoNeSs It's odd how it's been 20 years since SNK went under and yet we still don't fully know what caused it aside from the Neo-Geo systems failing and the reliance on Arcades. I personally think that other factors contributed to SNK's bankruptcy and I hope one day, someone will make a video about it for everyone to hear and see.
@@Rotostorm331 Maybe sells weren't that great, because the Neo Geo console was sold at a stupidly high price. Capcom thrived a lot making games for the most popular consoles. They have very strong IPs too. SNK was very strong, but when 3d games started to get most of the atention of the public, they lost copious amounts of money on games that flopped hard. Too sad.
Back when I was in high school I remember working at the Tech Museum in San Jose. At the time, they had an exhibit floor dedicated to gaming history. They had a bunch of obscure cabinets and Garou: Mark of the Wolves was my first exposure to Fatal Fury. Whenever I had a break and my supervisors weren't around, I'd dump my time off trying to fight Kain. Really appreciate the nostalgia trip Matt.
I literally DID buy the PlayStation version of Real Bout from a Virgin Megastore bargain bin about 20 years ago! Still have it too! Thanks for making that find feel even more special
Gotta finish your girl off with the POWAH GUYSA!
What about the BUSTAH WOLFA.
More like BUSTA NUT!
@dr.oocletusmcgillicuddy9508
What a way to end a grueling work day than seeing this video pop up in my notifications. Thanks Matt!
It's so crazy to me on how long it took me to get into the SNK library. Growing up, I only knew them as the guys who made Metal Slug 2 and its bopping soundtrack. Terry and KOF were out of my sight for years. Come this year, in the middle of college, burnt out with a handful of AAA games, I decided to begin emulating my old library. One thing led to another and I was able to get a handful of my library running on RetroArch. When I first saw KOF as a game, it was on a sale for cheap on GOG and I was still getting into PC gaming at the time, spending $7 at most on games for sale that got my interest. It was definitely a while since I played Street Fighter V, so I took a chance with the sale for KOF 98 UM Final Edition. At first glance, I had the feeling that this was a cop out capcom fighting game, as it played similarly out of the box. I'd pick characters like Ryo, Kyo, and Terry because they seemed more Capcom-esque to start with. The game turned out to be more complicated than I thought. I did however take note on its incredible arcade OST's, as they were, almost all the time, fun to jam to than play. I later found the arrange soundtracks for the titles and KOF ones in question during the summer and realized something: SNK at their peak makes better music than Capcom for fighting games. The songs hyped me up, even though I never played any of the games during summer. When school came back in session, I'd begin my runs through the first 3 KOF games between engineering classes and had a blast learning and vibing to the games and their mechanics. Somewhere down the line, I would like to play the Fatal Fury games as I have already listened to FF2 Special and Real Bout Arrange Soundtracks so many times, it took over my music queues for a week! Learning how to play some of the songs as I started playing guitar this year. Capcom will always be near and dear to my heart, for their art, designs, music, & that game-style feel that made me play video games in the first place (Still love them to this day even with their highs and lows). But I was genuinely surprised this year with what SNK had to offer, and for what is in store for me when I do play some of their other amazing games down the line. ALSO: Thanks for that GOD HAND take earlier! Just heard about the game months ago and am still finding new details about their production even now! Can't wait to play it after I finish Silent Hill 3!
Well well well, guess who's back from the dead.
Terry came out in Smash bros I was like "who's this?" One Buster Wolf later and I was in love.
This was absolutely glorious. Thanks for the trip. Was there really any other way to close out the video than with a blast of "Oh Angel?" No . . . no there really wasn't. Kudos to you sir. "Run your own race. Why go for second place? Common and grab a star."
I get the feeling that many people don't think to sort comments by newest to get answers to their questions.
This is a great video for someone like me who grew up mainly with Street Fighter, MK and Toshinden and never had much exposure to KoF and is trying to understand it all nowadays. I must say I was impressed by the presentation of KoF ‘94 when I gave it a try a while back, like the stage intros and narrative text.
I can't believe Terry from Smash Bros is finally getting his own game next year
I just got into fatal fury thanks to you many years ago and this is full circle. Thanks, Matt!! Much love
As a fellow SNK fan I am all in on this. Glad others foundly remember the series outside of King of Fighters
Incroyable. An excellent video, and let me appreciate the progression of a series that, up to now, I didn't know all that much about
Matt my dude! Thanks for making this retrospective and showing SNK that much needed praise and love. What an awesome Christmas gift this was!
You took me back with kawaks. MAME was cool but kawaks was great for arcade fighters
Shout out to you for taking the time to make this Video. It’s damn near 2AM and I’m just sitting here watching with my chin Resting on both palms, like a little kid watching Saturday morning cartoons. I know this video is only an hour but I can’t even imagine how much time it took you to even compile the research and essay for this video. Seriously, thank you.
This was such a fantastic video to watch! To tell you the truth you were the one that half a year ago inspired me to try out a SNK game and now I love them! I love Fatal Fury, KOF and Metal Slug and I’m thankful I gave these fun games a try thanks to your influence 😊
I'll always love Wild Ambition for Ryo alone. What a kickass look and set of moves.
Dear Matt, Thank you I'm now more than ready for Garou 2 thanks to you!
Will be picking up Real Bout and Mark of the Wolf now that I know more about them. This video rules.
I have my own little Fatal Fury Special for the SNES story. I saw it at Zellers upon its release for the not so fiscally convenient price of $97.99. Every so often as I revisited the store and saw the SNES library shrink, there sat Special. This went on for maybe 2 years or so as the then next gen consoles (N64, Playstation and even a few Saturn) games came out. The few remaining SNES games had all dropped in price but not Special. Then around my birthday in late 1997, I would once again visit Zellers and what did I see? Fatal Fury Special was the only SNES game left and it was now $27.99. Safe to say I grabbed it and have kept it in my collection to this day. Considering other SNK fighters such as Samurai Shodown, Art of Fighting and World Heroes stopped receiving SNES ports, I felt this was a big deal. Bonus Mini Fatal Fury 3 story: The first time I played it was part of a double disc PC package that also came with Samurai Shodown 2. I think they were Neo-Geo ports and with Shodown 2 one of my all time favourite fighting games, I didn't play as much of Fatal Fury 3. I found it a step back from Special with the smaller roster and the slight gameplay tweak that wasn't necessarily bad, just something I felt wasn't broke with Special.
The steady stream of quality content is super chill.
That technical issue made it so I was appropriately hyped when it finally worked. I love these videos. Thanks for articulating why I like the series so much. I've had an uncannily similar experience growing up with these games. My emulator of choice was NeoRageX though. Man, the memories. Thanks dude.
Great video. As someone who lives in Asia, I've played all of these in console version. Some are pirated version 😅 Truly an amazing series from SNK. Now, if only we can finally play as Jeff Bogard in the next game 😅
It's so hard to find quality content on SNK games and this my friend is a masterpiece. Highly entertaining and very enjoyable. Fantastic video. Thanks.
Perfect time to rewatch this 😄😄😄
This is the first ever retrospective video I've ever watched and it was fantastic, and that ending music was nostalgic AF!
In the early 2000s we had an arcade with Real Bout in the small village I lived in (from Romania) and let me tell you those were best memories from my childhood. We'd spend all summer playing the damn game, wasting countless coins, sometimes skipping school or stealing money from our parents, sometimes getting into real fights over matches. What a bunch of little punks, good times man.
You are knocking it out of the park with the content Matt, love to see it
Man I love your retrospectives! The idea of Garou 2 at the end has me salivating it'd be so amazing.
This was really cool to see, thanks for making it. I don't know what your experience is with Samurai Shodown. I'd love to see a history video for that series.
Well here we are all these years later and they finally announced a new sequel to Garou called "Fatal Fury/Garou" at Evo.
As someone more familiar with the anime OVAs than the games, your choice of credits music was the cherry on top of this incredible retrospective. Great work.
ending the video with Oh Angel was the cherry on top 👌🏼
I enjoyed this, you sir have a subscriber. This is my favorite franchise of all time.
Seeing those Garou 2 screenshots and what could have been 😭😭. Also, Terry's Buster Wolf sounds the best in Garou IMO. The animation, sfx and voicework, all Terr-ific... I'll see myself out.
Amazing video and exactly what I was looking for. Thank you.
Great retrospective Matt. Thanks! I had no idea about that Dominated Mind existed??!! I was lucky to play in an arcade from’94-2005.( managed it the last 5 years) Got lucky a friend had access to the MVS carts and the Hyper 64 board. Played Wild Ambition connecting the supers was fun and Toji/Tsugumi were highlights. Real Bout/RBS and of course Garou are the zenith for me. ( FFS fighting Argo as well!) So many awesome memories thanks for letting people know about these gems of Fighting Games!
You did an excellent job with this video. I normally don't commend uploaders, but I was very entertained by this. Keep it up!
Knowing that so many people didn’t get to play several of these games makes me feel so fortunate and lucky! I got to play (and become good at) them all!
I was on the fence whether or not I should pick up that ova collection but knowing you did some commentary for it makes it an absolute purchase. That's dope dude
Fantastic journey through one of the greatest fighting game IPs. Man, looking at those EGM and GAMEFAN magazine screenshots of Fatal Fury 3 was so painful. I didn't play it until the PS2 FF collection came out. Great video sir!!
I love the fatal fury animated stuff unabashedly.
Wild Ambition is actually how my sister and I started to find common ground, she is a Demon with Sendo, like when she was 9 and destroying my friends and I and had no problem doing her pretzel moves. I eventually got better with Geese and Terry, but a 9 year destroying a room of 15 year olds with Sendo is terrifying. She still plays fighting games, mostly SNK games even now 23 years later.
Thanks for this retro Matt, there's a lot I didn't know about this series. Funnily enough I do have the archives for PS, I may have to knock the dust off of those and give them another go.
Wow, this was an amazing video! Amazing job; you've just earned a new Patron!
I was lucky enough to be living in Japan in the mid-90s and a video rental store near where I lived had a mini-arcade which always seemed to get the latest Neo Geo games. Thus, I was lucky enough to play Road to the Final Victory, Real Bout and Real Bout Special when they first hit arcades. Enjoyed them so much that when I finally overspent on getting a Neo Geo CD (mainly to get Samurai Shodown 2; the greatest fighting game ever made--no arguments, it just is) I got all three of those as well; super long loading times and all! Thank you for bringing Dominating Mind to my attention, I had never heard of that one.
Bloody roar was awesome, loved wolfing out🤣👍
GREAT JOB, MATT!!! A real interesting and deep vid.
Great Job, Matt! Going to watch that DVD Comentary soon!!!!
Nice to have another person cover my favorite fighting game series. This was a great watch.
Awesome video! Love the Fatal Fury franchise since I was a kid and wasn’t aware of how many games didn’t make it overseas.
Fatal Fury is the GOAT
Dammit. I... LOVE this channel. I LOVE your love for fighting games. My affection for Fatal Fury/Real Bout/Garou are rooted SOLELY in admiration of the character design and 2d visuals (didn’t appreciate the gameplay until VERY LATE), passion for all aspects of this series cannot be ignored. This was a WONDERFUL look into this series that I’ve always avoided in favor of SF, and is a fantastic companion to Sakurai’s Intro to Fatal Fury/KoF during Terry’s showcase for Smash. Thank you for all your hard work!
awesome vid! props for mentioning the FINAL IMPACT
That was a wonderful deep dive into fatal fury. I really love your stuff and I watch wha happon(lol) every week. Two ideas I have for you are a deep dive into streets of rage and Tekken. The Tekken one should be a meaty one for you. Keep up all your hard work man. You bring so much joy to me as a gamer and I thank you.
my god you really covered it all. Thank you for this
Love how almost a year after this video, mark of the wolves 2 got announced. Granted its not coming out for a good couple years, but it lives.
This was awesome! Thank you for this
Muscles McMatt back with another great retrospective~!!!
My new favorite video, this one deserves all the views
This was awesome, I love learning about stuff like this from you. That end song sounded amazing, I would like to hear the whole thing
The end credits song is from the third Fatal Fury OVA! If you liked the video, you should check out the OVAs, they're a lot of retro fun.
This was an amazing telling of the Fatal Fury story. I unfortunately feel off after Fatal Fury 2 more because I never saw the game again anywhere in the Arcades except for FF3 in a rare Arcade on the boarder of a Arizona and Nevada Casino that my family rarely went to. But each time I did, I made sure to play a little of it. Fatal Fury holds a special place as it was the first fighting game that I ever played and really got me into the genre to begin with. I played a few other SNK games before even knowing about Street Fighter II to include Fatal Fury, Art of Fighting, and even World Heroes. I love your content and thanks for taking me on a trip down memory lane.
God Hand and Fatal Fury in one weekend?! Matt, you’re on fire, and know that you’re the best at what you do.
Longer the video, the better. I loved this !!
And just like that, I now care about Fatal Fury. Thanks Matt!
My God the Fatal Fury movies were such an amazing part of my childhood and when I first discovered anime in 94 starting with Ranma 1/2.
I've been playing video games since 1985 when I was 2, and I s*** you not, the first time I heard of Terry Bogard was when he was added to Smash. I've got vague recollection of SNK stages from the MUGEN PC boom in the late 90's/early aughts, but that's it. And I watched this from beginning to end. This is a credit to the interesting history of this SNK fighting series, but also to Matt McMuscles' fun and interesting docu-series style. Thank you for putting this together!
