An Epic Flight - Flying the Ilyushin IL-76 Cargo Transporter to Iraq

2022 ж. 10 Мау.

This week, I flew on SilkWay Ilyushin IL-76 transporter from Baku to Erbil, Iraq. The flight was completely different from the Western conventional airplane. It took a strong team of 5 men to operate including 2 pilots, a. flight engineer, a radio controller and a navigator. The flight also carries a loadmaster and 2 technicians.
Before takeoff, the captain and loadmaster briefly introduced the cockpit and the cargo cabin. Inside the cabin, it has a crane system and ramp system able to lower to load without infrastructure. This particular IL-76TD-90 has new stage 4 noise compliant engines (Perm PS90 engines) instead of the older and noisier Soloviev D-30 engines.
Our flight took 2.5 hours from Baku to Erbil. After dropping off the cargo, we flew back to Baku empty. The view from the navigator seat through the glass nose was amazing. Watch the full video of the entire IL-76 flight and cargo operation.
The Ilyushin Il-76 is a multi-purpose, fixed-wing, four-engine turbofan strategic airlifter designed by the Soviet Union's Ilyushin design bureau. It was first planned as a commercial freighter in 1967. For more information, visit: www.silkwayairlines.com/fleet...

  • In the early 90, as a journalist, I flew with such a beast to Bangladesh (packed with relief goods), after a devastated cyclone hit the country. We landed in Dhaka during a fierce tropical thunderstorm (child's play for our Russian pilot). I was sitting with the navigator and had an awsome view (through the windows below our feet) of the rain and lightning flashes and the extremely bumpy landing on a flooded tarmac... Never forgot that flight because I was scared like hell!

  • Fans of the IL-76 should check out the 2010 movie "Kandagar" about an IL-76 forced to land in Afghanistan by the Taliban. It is based on a true story and the diary of the Captain of the plane. The crew were held hostage for over a year, but eventually managed to escape in the plane! Its an incredible story with lots of great footage of our favourite plane. :)

  • Boy, I could tell you a great story about an IL-76 experience I had a long time ago, but I better not. Suffice to say, it is a very impressive and solid airplane with "quick disconnects" everywhere, if you know what I mean. It was nice to revisit this wonderful aircraft here with Sam giving the tour. I remember the incredible APU's capability at heating things up quickly inside a pretty much frozen airframe. I also remember the heavy two piece rivetted aluminium intake covers, but they did their job well in a snow storm. I remember being impressed at the common sense layout of the cargo bay. A true work horse ready for anything, anywhere. Thanks for the tour!

Всего выпустили более тысячи бортов, сейчас продолжают летать несколько сотен. Я рад, что в моём родном городе строили этот легендарный самолёт. Жаль, что с развалом Советского Союза, разрушили и этот завод.

  • The best video of IL 76 TD inflight experience of yours remembered back my olden days' of my experience too in IAF IL 76. It's very reliable and very strong build aircraft. Enjoyed watching. One thing to light those days Russian/ azal crews don't speak fluent English but from your video it's well proved their level of English is surprised.
