  • I retired six years ago and decided to dive into photography. About 5 years ago, I attended a photography conference where you were the keynote speaker. You encouraged the audience to start channels and that stuck with me. So in 2020 I started a channel and it's given me a real purpose. It's definitely helped my photography, for the exact reasons you stated. Thanks!

  • Doing this switch in your head from photo to video shoot is I think what makes your videos so enjoyable to watch. I often have my mind blown watching all the b-rolls you do. Walking away, walking towards, parking your car, driving away. I'm astonished by how much you focus on that and I would never have the patience to do all that. When I'm thinking that all those times you have to walk back, or stop your car and get out to get camera, I just can't grab my head around it how much additional work this is. I think this makes your trips at least twice longer (if not more) than they could be if it would be just photo shoot. But in the end I think that is the very important reason, why your videos are so enjoyable.

  • Congratulations Thomas! One thing I think you forgot to mention is the need for a supportive family. I don't think the average person realizes how much time and effort is involved in editing these wonderful videos!

  • Like you say Thomas, the KZhead viewers are the older generation. I am just coming up to my 64th birthday and I believe I have been following you from the start and before when you were on Flickr. Way back then you gave me advice on where to park up for the night at Glen Etive and I loved the fact that you were so willing to share the information. I do also understand now why so often the details of precisely where a view is located is best kept to yourself. I don’t share myself if i think that all the individual wants is to bag a shot and then go. When it is someone who understands nature and landscapes, are passionate about it and caring, only then will I share. But this is about you, and your birthday on KZhead. If I had to choose a favourite video it was the one when you parked up and took us along with you, blind folded, to the shore. This showed just what a wonderful poet you are with the most amazing ability to find the right words to describe the beauty around you, where others are so often lost for words. HAPPY BIRTHDAY. 🎉

I start my family channel for exactly that, and now I have multiple adventures I can look back on as my kids grow up. Everest Base Camp, snorkelling in the Maldives to my son losing his first front tooth. All because I found a landscape photographer that shared his adventures. Thank you for all that you do, you have help this father make some memories with his kids worth remembering!! Stay safe From an Australian Dad

  • Timely advice, for me personally, as I recently launched my own channel. It does take a real effort to shift to a video producer from photographer. I’m still feeling my way as to what might work, but you’re 100% about being true to yourself. People spot a fake a mile away. Thanks Thomas. Incidentally, I came to your channel during your dip. You may not have noticed, but it looked like you were struggling with your photography. It was your style and personality that kept me coming back. And now, you’re back and better than ever!

  • Yep.. is true. I keep looking on demographics on my other channel related to amateur radio and most of my audience is 60+ and I kind of like it because they are wise people and always leave smart comments that help me improve. When it comes to photography, it's been an year since I keep saying I will start making video on my channel since I know it will also make me go out a lot more. I kept postponing that thinking "maybe is a little late". So this video was more like a kick in the back to move forward and actually start making some videos. Thanks so much for this. P.S. To make you feel better in the bad days.. I think I'm watching you for the past 6 years simply because you also show those $hit days too when things don't work out well. So the videos always make me feel like we are out for a chat somewhere.

  • A lot of the tips hit home with me. Having a small photography channel myself, I experienced a lot of the same stuff already. Being consistent with weekly uploads has eluded me so far. I make videos when I can and when I feel it’s worth it. Resulting in a very slow growth to the channel 🫣. Thanks for sharing your genuine perspective ✌🏻

  • I think it was primarily both yourself and Nigel Danson that inspired me to start my channel - glad to see you're still enthusiastic about it about 10 years. I wish I could say the same about video/photography becoming second nature - I still find it hard to do my best photography when making videos. I wouldn't change it though - like you said it opens up a huge and engaged audience and that's worth a lot. Keep up the good work. 🙂

  • I think this may be your most meaningful video, for me, that you have done. Thank you. When we were instructors together back years ago in Moab, and we rode up to the LaSalle Mountains with Ryan Smith, I thought to myself I really need to do videos to be more relevant. As I started doing more videos, I felt my photography did suffer, and I started losing the joy of what I was doing landscapes for to be begin with. I rarely do videos now, but my enjoyment of what I am doing is back to where it should be. Thank you for you informative honesty! Cheers.

  • Thanks Thomas, and greetings from Colorado! I started my KZhead Channel a few years ago. I can attest to how hard it is! I have so much respect for your consistency and professional production. I took a break from making videos for a few months while I focused on building my website, and writing for different platforms. During that time I continued to see some slow growth on my channel. I've been doing shorts as a way to stay active on the platform without the time investment for longer, story-based videos. After watching this inspirational video, I am eager to get back to making longer videos again. BTW, I still pull out your "Landscape Photography On Location Vol 1" book regularly. Love what you do, so keep it up!

  • I find it interesting that several of the elite photographers I follow are publishing introspective videos now about their KZhead experience. Some have announced a pullback of content and effort. I completely understand why. I did start a channel as well, but for various reasons including health, have let it slip recently. I enjoy putting out information that might be helpful, and have virtually met some wonderful people in return, but KZhead is and always will be just another interesting pastime for me. I have to say, though, Tom, that the production value of your content is second to none. I can image how much effort it takes. That you have a realistic expectation of what you get in return makes it all the more better.

I set up my channel about 4 weeks ago and I'm really enjoying creating and publishing videos that share my story and (hopefully) give some value, entertainment, and information to viewers. I try not to get obsessed with getting more subscribers although it would be nice. My video's are ok I have posted around 68 video's including shorts. Few are not even related to photography. I would like to think some of the photos I've posted are genuinely awesome shots. Bottom line I enjoy doing youtube and I do it more for myself than anything. • Well Tom, I can still remember coming accros your very first video over nine years ago, I think two weeks after you uploaded it. I remember thinking that it was a bit on the steady side and needed a little bit of refinement at the time. However there was something at the back of my mind telling me to keep watching as you had something a little bit different than a lot of others around that time. Obviously I did keep watching and it didn't take long for you to develop you own style and produce some very interesting and well made videos. I have to agree with you that you need commitment to produce constantly interesting content and that is probably why most of the good photography KZheadrs do it full time, it must be very hard to commit the time required whilst holding down a full time job or full time business at the same time. Keep up the good work, I like many others look forward to your videos each week. I know you are always looking for different areas to visit, especially areas that don't seem to have been visited by photography KZheadrs before, may I recommend the the Rhinog Mountains area in central Snowdonia, I'm sure you will easily find plenty of park ups around the many back roads.

And I love tech. It is not easy to get the channel going. One has to commit to doing a video almost every week. Which I have not done. Since my income does not depend on it I have not worried about it. But it is fun to do. I love your channel and watch every video you put out. Don’t ever stop!

  • I believe I'm currently in the learning-to-drive-phase. I notice it's geting easier for me to come home with enough content for B-Roll, enough material to get a video out of. But I can very much relate to what you said about noticing the images suffer. I'm very much occupied with recording the right bits and pieces and more often than i'd like am distracted from taking the photographs. I hope practise makes perfect and one day I won't be a threat to traffic anymore. Figuratively speaking. We all know good weather conditions render us all incompetent just keeping the eyes on the road. That being said: you're probably my biggest influence in all of this and thinking back...I can't tell which one was the first video of yours I watched but it was pretty early on I believe. And I haven't missed one video since. Please keep doing what you do.

  • Great work Thomas. As always, honest and valuable. And timely for me - I started, then chickened out. But wanting to return to posting content. Just find the whole "talking to a camera" (especially in public outside) really hard. But hopefully soon. Thanks man.

  • When I discovered your channel, 5 or 6 years ago I started watching all your videos from the beginning because there was a peacefulness coming from them. You hiking to a spot and setting up your tent, and of course taking pictures. And since then I am hooked. I never miss an upload no matter what the subject is ! Thank you for your awesome content and for making me want to go in the field and take pictures... maybe now I am going to start a channel too ! You are so inspirational !

  • Thomas, your channel was the first photography channel which my wife and I discovered, back when you had first started it. (probably your first year) We were immediately hooked and never miss an episode to this day. We follow a few other photography channels too now but we're very stingy when it comes to subscribing to anything. I think I speak for both of us when I say that yours is still our favourite. Cheers, from Canada.

  • While I have no interest in doing a KZhead video, I can appreciate the quality, honesty, generosity, and humility of this advice. Well done Thomas!

  • The "video vs photo shoot" was excellent advice. I always struggle with that concept.

  • Great mixture of advice and reflection Thomas. I normally skip this style of video because it's the usual fluffy nonsense that adds nothing particularly useful, lacks introspection, and just mirrors basic generic nonsense. But, given it's from you and the fact that you are consistently reflective and introspective I opted to give it a watch anyhow. Sure enough, really great insights and very useful context that delivers a lot of value. A piece I'm instantly inclined to pass on to friends who have talked about or considered the youtube side of things and video creation. Great work as always and thank you for - as you said - delivering content that actually passed value to the audience and not just SEO clickbait.

  • Great video boss as per usual. I also bought a lens from MPB recently from their European depo and it arrived in Bulgaria (the back of beyond) exactly when they said it would and the lens was as they described perfect. Thanks for posting.

  • What I like about your channel, and others is the talking you do throughout the video when you are on location. I watched some the other day, they were doing the same shoot in Spain as yourself. I didn't finish any of them because all they did was take photos and added the talking after the shoot in the comfort of their hotel room. For me it wasn't real. Keep up your excellent work.

  • I have just started my own photography KZhead channel this year and your point on the difference between a video shoot and a photo shoot is huge! Such a good way to look at it and get it right in your head first. Congratulations on 10 years, I absolutely love your videos, some of the best on KZhead 👊

  • I've been watching your channel Tom for the past 5 years and let me tell you that you your videos have 100% percent inspired me to firstly get into landscape photography and then to start vlogging my photography adventures and record them to look back on. I'm also loving the direction you've taken your channel, the travel photography and the campervan photography trips. As a fairly new YTer it's great to hear your thoughts, good and bad, about growing a channel, it's a very demanding job and it can be a difficult balance trying to get the photography and videography right every time.

  • Thomas I have been along for the ride for probably 6-7 years. You were one of the first YT landscape photographers that I came across. I do marvel at all the work that you put into making these videos. I think about how much time you take for us to feel part of your journey each week. At this point I don’t plan to start my own channel but who knows what the future has in store. I can relate to the emotions you go through each and every week when you pour your heart and soul into a video and it just doesn’t work. It takes a lot of courage to stick to your original mission for the channel when you see a dip in your numbers. I do appreciate the variety of your topics, it holds my interest and keeps me coming back. I just admire all the work that goes into making your channel a success, I tip my hat to you for your work ethic and passion that comes through in your channel.

  • Big congrats on (almost) 10 years, Thomas! I've always been keen to watch your videos since I discovered your channel in 2016. It's honestly one of my favourite photography channels. Thank you for all these inspiring videos over the years. I've learnt a lot from them! As always, this is a great video with handy tips - not sure if I'll ever get in front of the camera... I hate listening to my own voice and talking to a camera in front of other people would be way out of my comfort zone 😅
