I love Kona Bikes and so when I found this 2005 Kona Kula Primo frame at the Ogden Bicycle Collective I had to have it and wasted no time in getting it built so I could ride it.

  • I don't know what we would do without KZhead vids sometimes. I am also rebuilding a Kona, a Lavadome. I was thinking I could try a 2X. I would have encountered this same problem with the front derailleur mount. As an amateur I have run into other problems trying to use more modern components already. I think I'll stick with the XT 3X for now.

  • In 2002 I worked for a marketing company and the boss told us to put pictures on our desktop of financial goals. Everyone else had pics of expensive cars, houses, etc. Mine was a Kona Dawg Deluxe. 🤘🏼

  • I got my ‘98 Kona ManoMano used from one of the reps back in ‘98. Your channel inspired me to find a XS Kona for my wife and build it up. Now she has a ‘99 ManoMano.

  • That is a lovely build. I rode Konas in the 90s, before swapping to Giant in the early 00s and to this day I miss that Kona ride quality that I have never felt on another bike. Thanks for a thoughtful and charming film.

  • I like the off white cream part of the frame on this one. Old Kona's always looked like candy with the bursts of colour. Still got my 2000 Pahoehoe along with my Process 111. First "real" bike was a 2000 Hahanna.

  • Commenting again at he beginning of the vid, yeah Kona kula was a proper dream bike, but for me it was the earlier ones from the 90s. Think they were easton elite frames that were super light. Think it was the same frame as Parkpree had on their alu bike, and it was 1.3kg. So light.

  • Great video. Brings back memories of when I modernized my 2005 Devinci Cameleon hardtail. So much fun. I turned it into a 1x12, went tubeless and added an external dropper. The geo was still old school but everything else was modern.

  • Best riding 26" bike I ever owned. My best ever race result came on my Kula. The 68 deg. head angle was radical (in my mind) for the time. First few rides I'd kind of loop out on the super steep climbs until I learned to shift my weight but man could that thing carve a corner and get downhill. Regrettably I broke mine at the seat tube. Killer frame.

  • The local bike shop we had here closed in 2020 sold Kon🍁's👍👍. He had a Honzo Titanium; he was only asking $6,000. It had a Fox suspension fork, SLX drivetrain, and I believe 8000 XT disk brakes🤘🤘. Why aren't you going with a 7075 aluminum riser bar😁

  • Agreed, the bar stem combo is a little odd, i recall my 2004 kona had Koski branded 20mm riser bars about 680mm wide and stem was about 70 or 80mm long. An inline seatpost will inprove body position on climbs as the arms looked quite extended out, stable yes but you also want to move about over the bike when it get rowdy going downhill. Will be nice to see the next update on this one, great looking kona.

  • Excited to see another video. These old Easton frames were really cool. I remember a lot of them cracked. This bike screams for a modernization like you used to do for your kids years ago (long time subscriber). 1x, maybe an external routed dropper. Are those UST tires on a non UST mavic rim, might need a cross max. I liked that standard, when sealant wasn’t required to run tubeless.

  • what would you recommend for a midrange 140mm 27.5 straight steerer post mount air fork? I've been trying to find one but since straight steerers are going the way of dinosuars the only thing that comes up on eBay are crappy $100 Chinese brand air forks. I can't seem to find anything from Rockshox or Fox. I currently have a 120mm Rockshox Recon RL that I bought brand new from eBay about 3yrs ago but I want to go to 140mm of travel.
