FORGING A ROUNDING HAMMER WITH TORBJÖRN ÅHMAN

I went down to visit Torbjörn Åhman and we decited to forge a rounding hammer. It was a great visit and i learned a lot from him, and for that i am greatfull! I chose to only include the actual forging of the hammer, since the other part is fairly straight forward and you can see it if you watch Torbjörns video on forging a rounding hammer.
Hope you enjoyed the video!

  • Is there a reason you don’t use a Brian brazeal style striking anvil? I use mine almost every day and love it!!

    @ztheblacksmith@ztheblacksmith3 жыл бұрын
  • Nice job! I think the striking hammer (sledge hammer) I use Has a 26” handle to give you an idea. The anvil height of a typical hand hammer users anvil along with the added height of a top tool is a little too hiqh for a striker wielding a striking hammer. You probably felt that as you struck and maybe you and Torbjorn discussed it. A typical height for a striking anvil is 24”. Im guessing Torbjorn mostly works alone and doesn’t hand strike many hammers so a striking anvil isn’t a high priority in his shop. My goal as a striker is to be like a power hammer or drop hammer and deliver a vertical blow to the top tool. One thing I do is to keep an eye on the contact surface of the struck end of the top tool to see how vertical my blows are. You get to watch yourself in the video, a great way to check it out. I hadn’t watched any of your videos until I saw Torbjorn’s name mentioned in the title of this video. I’m going to subscribe to see what you’re up to. Thanks for the video.

    @becauseicanchannel3617@becauseicanchannel36173 жыл бұрын
    • Good question... i can really only think of two reasons.. first one is the beuty of it. Sencond is to move the face further away from the handle without making it slimmer. Imagine we didnt use the fullers, the face of the hammer would be alot closer to the grip, so the fullers are a way to move the faces of the hammer away from the handle slightly

Vad räknar du som "mild steele" Och vad använder du som härdbart eggmaterial? "Springsteele" fattar jag ju, men ett riktigt kolstål? Riktigt kul att se fler svenska smeder på youtube! Knivar vill vi se mer av. :-.)

    @juhalindstrom1414@juhalindstrom14143 жыл бұрын
    • Det finns olika vikter på hammare av en anledning. Använder du en "lätt" hammare(runt 1kg) och behöver flytta mycket material kan du hålla längst bak för att få maximal energi. Föredrar du däremot att använda en tung hammare(2kg+) kan det bli för jobbigt att hålla längst bak hela tiden. Men tanken är precis som med tunga yxor att istället för att du svingar som en dåre låter du fallvikten på hammaren göra jobbet och du siktar mest. Smaken är som baken.
