    • My all time favorite floor routines are this one - Nadia at the 1976 American Cup; and Olga Korbut's floor routine from the 1972 Munich Olympics. I wasn't as crazy about Nadia's floor routine at the 1976 Montreal Olympics. It was very cute, but when compared to this one, I like this one better.

  • I think the best thing about this performance is that she never breaks character. If you look at a lot of the floor routines nowadays, there’s always a pause and gathering of breathe before a big tumbling run...not here. She was consistently moving and showing personality...feels like I am watching a sprite gallivanting in the woods.

I could easily perform mary lou's routines, she just wasn't doing very difficult skills at all. at the 1984 Olympics in 1982. But not the Romainian's. Or Russians, who weren't present. The Russians dominated the sport for a century. 2 Russians tied at the 84 World Championships for the Gold they were so good. You want to see someone defy gravity AND physics watch Simone Biles. No she wasn't the power house Dawes or Miller was, but she paved the way for them. As a former gymnast, I still think the routine is timeless and should be appreciated as such.

All through my childhood, the name Nadia Comaneci was always uttered with such reverence, that, like a child, I thought she was must be like a queen or a goddess. It’s funny to see, all these years later, that she’s a girl! I don’t know what I was expecting… I suppose I thought she would at least float off the ground in a cloud of purple sparkles. • @@rockstar46able I'm a former Elite gymnast & I've performed on every surface imaginable at one time or another. My body hurts. Difficulty has come a long way since 72. Or 76. Or the 80's or 90's. In fact, it's about nothing BUT difficulty now in the scoring. Check out Simone Biles on the floor doing the Biles defying physics. There's a video on her defying physics. She does a triple back with 2 1/2 twists (I think). Mary lou in 84 Olympics did a double back. (2 rotations). A triple back was thought to be impossible. Also, men are usually the 1st to perform new skills on floor, etc but not anymore. She doesn't have a long way to run to gain momentum to get the height to do that many rotations & twists in one move. Unbelievable. Love Olga! A little before my time. I love her bar routine, even though it's simple, the originality & style is exceptional! Definitely a groundbreaking gymnast, I saw the move you're referring to, it's pretty easy(by 10 I could do it) , but original like everything she did! !♥️♥️☮☮kzhead.info/sun/bKyIYN6roJmeZmg/bejne.html

Their choreography may not be traditional ballet like the Russians', but it's playful, cheerful, and very expressive. Nadia displays them very well here, and it's a legacy that the Romanians are reknown for even to this day, evident in gymnasts like Larissa Iordache, Catalina Ponor, Andreea Iridon, Ana Porgras and many more.

  • I was obsessed with Nadia Comaneci as a child. I had the album with her theme song, a book about her, watched her special hosted by Flip Wilson, and even fashioned a homemade Nadia doll and was so angry the commentators at the Olympics couldn't pronounce her name correctly. I began doing gymnastics in my front yard and taught myself front handsprings, back semis, aerial cartwheels, one-legged back walkovers on a balance beam made from a 4 x 4 board. I was 11 years old and 78 lbs.; exactly the same as my best friend. Then, over the summer, I had a huge growth spurt, and although I remained very lean and muscular, in 3 months, I weight 106 lbs. I had grown to my full height of 5'6". I only weighed 4 more pounds at age 25 which tells you how much I had changed. My boyish body grew hips and was way too tall to do many of those moves I learned. It broke my heart ... until I heard Ann Wilson singing "Crazy on You" on a hot rod's radio while doing walkovers in the front yard. I saved up my allowance and rode my bike to the local electric guitar shop. I became a professional musician for many years and had one of Ann's guitarists in one of my first bands as a young girl. But, I never forgot about that determined little girl who never smiled. She was a bada**.

  • I met Nadia and Bart Conner in 2000 ish. I told them my sister was crying on the phone after I told her they were there (at my office) and was 35 years old. Bart said "get her on the phone." My sister talked to Nadia for five minutes in the green room at Oxygen. Mostly my sister talked and Nadia was "a good sport" literally. One of the best moments ever. We both grew up watching them on Wide World of Sports. The thrill of success... and the agony of defeat...

  • Why people keep comparing her with today's gymnasts? The conditions and the level back then were so different that any comparison is useless. What she did was imprssive and unseen before for those times. She imposed a new level on gymnastics and so did the other gymnasts who fallowed her. It's just the way it goes. Enjoy these differences and this old style or watch another video instead of being pathetic ignorants, hating a 14 years old girl who's now a 53 years old happy woman who doesn't give a damn about any of you.

  • As a Romanian from the same town, you hear a lot about Nadia and her achievements. I have to confess, for a while I was thinking 'here they go again, clinging onto some sports achievements from ages ago cause we don't have much at present', but when i started looking into her performances, i do feel something special. I love how musical this interpretation is, with gestures exactly on the right note, very playful choreography and this feeling of ease and smoothness. Right up my alley for disciplines that are halfway between sport and interpretative art. I see the same type of musicality and feel for the discipline as with Yuzuru Hanyu in ice skating for example, even though they are decades apart and covered different disciplines (and ofc different standards of difficulty)

  • Still my favorite. I have a daughter who is a college gymnast and I have been watching a LOT of gymnastics, and coaching, for a long time( about 45 years). I have watched every significant senior gymnast and hundreds of college gymnasts and thousands of JO kids. When I go back and watch Nadia, she STILL amazes me. I've never seen a gymnast with better body position, technique or execution. Flawless. Today's competitors do harder skills, but much of that is a function of the equipment( sprung floors, padded and sprung beams, pads everywhere, huge vault table, etc.). Nadia's difficulty, even with the significantly harder and more dangerous equip of old, is very comparable to today's college girls, only executed even better, 45!years later!. If she had today's beams, it's hard to imagine what she'd be doing, and what she could do on a trampoline-like floor of today and bars that allow giants, mind boggling. She'd certainly have as much or more difficulty than anyone on bars( Suni lee with better lines and execution) and beam ( think Shawn Johnson on beam with more grace, etc.) anyone but Simone on floor( and she'd be close). She'd be in the mix in vault. Moreover, her lines, body position and flawless execution would make her prohibitive favorite on bars and beam, head to head with Simone on floor( probably slightly lower start value and likely higher execution) and in the mix for a medal on vault. That would bode very well for her in AA.

  • Agreed. This didn't have the technical difficulty that you see in today's floor exercises, but she had the total package because her moves flowed well and were better choreographed than what you see today, and she had great lines. Plus, her tumbling passes were clean. Back then, the mats were not springy like they are now, so she didn't get great height or power in her tumbling, but this is more enjoyable to watch than most of the floor routines you see today.
