  • This was great, I'm a double amputee and this is a very recent condition so my transitions are not the easiest in the world. I fly out in December to go on a cruise and I have called and set up everything (I hope) with Jet Blue. they have my battery size and all the necessary digits for my chair. I feel really good about traveling and this is my second cruise handicapped and my first flight!!! Fingers crossed. Thanks again for all of the helpful information. I'm subscribed and following!!

I was on a walker then. I’d love to hear about where you went how the cruise line accommodated you, how long the flights was and how that went.

I dont have one of those things since I use a walker but man traveling takes all the energy. one thing I most say, you were teaching people how to be polite and calm while traveling. those people were doing their job and had to check everything that for some people it may feel like a lot but is not. thank you very much, keep the great job.

  • Just a thought, you may still want to check with your airline. I fly Delta, and every time I travel I am supposed to call them and give them the specs on my chair. They refuse to store it because of HIPAA. I despise having to do this as it's usually 30-40 minutes on hold and I am brain dead from the music by the time somebody answers :D also last time I traveled my info didn't make it into the computer somehow and I had to deal with everything all over again when I tried to check in. I do worry a bit everytime I check my chair because of course you hear of damage too often...

  • Excellent video and helpful information but if I had to go through all this just to get on a damn plane to go anywhere I think Hertz would be getting my business and not the airlines nor would I even enter an airport. If for some reason I actually had to fly (commercial) I would just crawl (no joke) through the TSA screening area and onto the plane. I am sure that would get their attention and YES it would all be in a video for the public and government types to see. There truly should be a more streamlined process for disabled travelers to fly. Being separated from my power chair when I am up and about is serious business for me.

    • You must use a folding wheelchair, too. My motorized chair does not fold, and renting a vehicle to accommodate it costs more than renting a tiny apartment for a month pretty much anywhere. I have my own van, but it's becoming unreliable and it will take ne a while to be able to afford to replace it, but traveling far would be very scary. I used to LOVE flying but haven't for so many years now, it breaks my heart.

I knew that I'll have to remove the battery before getting on the plane, but I wouldn't have thought to also remove the joystick. Good to know! One question: on the TSA website, it says "Lithium ion batteries must be removed from this type of mobility device and *battery terminals protected from short circuit*." What is the best way to protect the battery terminals? Or is it even necessary with this chair? Thanks again for the wonderful video!

  • Thanks for this video! Quick question: when booking a flight ticket, should we call the airline company and let them know that we are flying with an electric wheelchair or is it like buying a regular ticket as others without wheelchairs?

    @waterawarness9105@waterawarness9105 Жыл бұрын
    • You should call, just in case there are any unique restrictions, all airlines are different, especially international ones.

      @MobilityDirect@MobilityDirect Жыл бұрын
    • I live in the US and have experience with all three major airlines. You can buy a regular ticket and be sure to show up to the airport a bit earlier than usual. Go directly to your check-in counter (I usually go ahead and check in online anyway but answer yes to "unusual items" gets me the "see agent" note). There is paperwork to fill out. Usually asking for dimensions, size, weight, & type of wheelchair; type of batteries; detachable items; & damages. They'll ask you if you're taking your chair to the gate (I'm assuming you can check it there) & if you need any assistance to the gate and/or to your seat on the plane (they have aisle chairs to get you to where you're sitting, if needed). When I get to the gate, maybe 20 mins before boarding when there's a lull, I'll roll up to the gate agent & introduce myself & ask if there's anything I need to do or know. That way they know I'm there and if they missed any procedure at the first counter, it's squared away there. After that, I do just what he's done in the video & wheel down to the plane, then walk with my cane onto the plane from the jet bridge to my seat (full disclosure, I'm also almost always in 1A) but I do request assistance with getting my 2 batteries & cushion onboard and stowed. I always have a backpack which is where I store my joystick. It's all not an easy tow for me. More often than not, even though I don't request them, there's always an airlines wheelchair and assistor waiting on the jetbridge. I'm assuming that's on the off chance that they've damaged my chair and I won't be stranded on the plane. The good news is there's usually a dedicated check in counter, line to get your ID checked at security, & first boarding opportunity. Everyone is very helpful, friendly, & knowledgeable (some airline(s) friendlier than others, lol), so don't be afraid to ask questions. Communication is key! The drawback is you will more than likely be last-ish off the plane, as they have to bring your chair back up to the jet bridge. So be mindful if you have a layover that you're allowing enough time for that & your mandatory restroom break & getting to your next gate. Most people say to try and avoid layovers to limit the risk of an incident (mostly involving your chair) derailing your trip in the wrong city. But I haven't had any issues yet. 😊

This shows how reliable the power wheelchair is! Thanks for watching and commenting. • Since I've been in my chair, I've been afraid to fly. This is helpful. My chair is large, doesn't fold or disassemble. I also don't know about the battery removal. What about the charger, can't go anywhere without that? I was confused, did they let you carry the battery/ies and joystick on with you? I think it would have been more helpful with an actual person that can't just walk away from their chair.

They'll also be able to give you necessary assistance. • I haven't flown for many years, had no idea the pat down process was so extensive. Doesn't seem like they should need to run their hands over one area more than a couple times. Looked like they did this 5-8 times, feels excessive to me. Also the way they had you tip to the side, lifting up, not everyone in a wheelchair can actually do this. I haven't even seen the whole video yet, and I'm starting to doubt I'll ever fly again.

    @TheRealNewBlackMusic@TheRealNewBlackMusic11 ай бұрын
    • Hello and thanks for your comment. I'm not sure about the question, but I imagine that most taxis that can accommodate wheelchairs will have a wide enough vehicle to support various wheelchair types. This Pride Mobility wheelchair has a pretty common width and my guess is that it will fit.

So you removed battery & joy stick and kept them on you during flight??? I’ll have to learn removing them once I buy electric chair .. how much $$$ for your carbon chair??? Or non carbon fiber chair??? Just a simple chair will do as well. Can you add a cane holder to it as an option???
