I operated a container ship in pirate waters from 2004 through 2010. In 2005 we were alarmed to see a report from the International Maritime Bureau that there were 3 attempted boardings in a week. That was later surpassed by 5 attempts a day in the following years. The insurance industry wrote a letter demanding the world’s navies do something. A western military spokesman said that they can’t be responsible for 6,000 square miles of ocean and that ships had to protect themselves. The insurance companies responded by voiding any policy where the crew was armed - it’s better to pay out a small ransom than for the pirates to view the crew as an obstacle and then have to pay 20 death benefits. The international community later established the IRTC where navy ships could respond to a vessel being attacked (if they felt like responding) - I’m not kidding. When I was home I would tell my friends about the piracy threat. They were shocked to hear and wondered why it wasn’t in the news. I said, because an American ship hasn’t been hit yet. Then in 2009 the Maersk Alabama was attacked and we all began to know about piracy in the 21st century. In 2010 I went through pirate water twice a month and there was at least one mayday every transit, but I had 10 meters of freeboard and could do 23kts. Those poor bastards with 5 meters of freeboard and could only do 13kts were screwed. I once was turning north into the Red Sea when I saw a thousand small skiffs milling about and a German frigate leaving the Red Sea at dusk. I called the frigate and asked, don’t you see all these skiff and that dusk is a time for pirate attacks. The frigate responded that the skiffs appeared to be fishing. The ship I just passed sent out a mayday an hour later and was taken by pirates. It may have gotten better, but it really sucked for us at one time.
I think your comment was cut off.

Did your company ever hire on private maritime security contractors as things started to really get dangerous?
@@WorldxTracer That wasn’t an option at the beginning. The original recommendations was to stay 75 miles offshore, then 100, then 200 and then 600 because they started using mother pirate boats. We followed best practices to harden our vessel with fire hoses and nets to deflect being boarded. My advantage was speed and freeboard, until one day we blew a lubricating injector off the #7 cylinder and had to stop just South of Aden Yemen. I notified UKMTO of my situation and doubled my lookouts. We were dead in the water for the hour it took to make the repair and a bit of time to get 70,000 tons back up to speed, all the time looking out for a little boat that could close on us in 20 minutes. We lucked out as it was a mildly rough day at sea so the pirates weren’t around. I was buzzed by a U.S. Navy P3-Orion while the engineers made quick repairs, which made me feel very proud. UKMTO posted that ships with speeds greater than 15kts and freeboard greater than 8 meters hadn’t been boarded, so the low and slow vessels were at greatest risk.
@@chrisholmgren1595 Wait... so the pirates were... using carrier tactics, sending over scout boats along the sea lines and then sending teams to capture vessels, so they were becoming professionals... @@BierBart12 I've shot my AK without earpro a couple times, definitely loud enough to ring your ears, definitely a dumb thing to do, but yea there is a big difference between short vs sustained. I can still hear ok though.
Decibels isn't the only factor when making sonic deterrents, frequency matters too. An absolutely shrieking 4khz @ 160DB at the source, the likely area for suffering hearing damage stretches all the way out to 75m. And that's not even mentioning the fact that gunshots will mostly only affect hearing maybe give you a ringing headache if it's a particularly big round, but the LRAD is designed to shake up your entire body.
I think you will find that it is the "certain frequencies" that are used that do it. Though I doubt they will use brown noise.
LRADS can make you vomit and give you bad headaches at close range or if your being blasted by it long enough
The problem with guns is that many countries won't allow armed merchant ships in their ports. That can be solved by having craft placed at specific points to allow armed guards to embark and disembark outside of territorial waters.
Someone should start a rental service. When you enter pirate infested waters, there's a boat where you can rent a bunch of guns and turn them back in at a second boat when you leave the area at the other side. Sounds like a nice bussiness to me.
It can be solved by cutting off trade until they agree to allow armed merchant ships.

Well, technically they do have a bow. But it's really big. And part of the ship. So impractical by all means (for defense, that is. It's totally practical for keeping your ship afloat though).
Castles were usually sieged without combat, people don't want to starve to death.
Defenders have no bow and arrows but their castle can move and some of them pretty damn fast, a lot of pirate raids fail because the merchant ships can outrun or outlast the small motorboats with limited fuel and no ocean-going capabilities.
In Somalia, it's apparently considered a proper job, being a pirate. (EDIT, the pirate in question was from Nigeria, not Somalia). A few years back, a boatload of the scum came under fire from a danish navy vessel that patrolled the waters for pirates. The boat was sunk, and a few of them lived. One lost a leg, he and his family are now settled for life in Denmark, sustained by the danish tax payers. The navy officers in command were almost charged for improper conduct during the incident. Good video overall, but you're mistaken about the main point: cargo vessels routinely used armed guards when traversing the Gulf of Aden. Depending on the route, they are picked up outside the piracy area and they get off the vessel once it has safely transited or joined a convoy. I know this because I worked in the industry, and we regularly paid companies to provide armed guards expressly for this purpose.
I never thought that I would ever comment this under a such a random video title, BUT: I've asked myself this for years! Thank mate, great video!
I would suggest using extremely powerful IR and UV lasers. This will seriously damage the eyes of any pirate because the lasers would be invisible to them and they would therefore be unaware that they are being blinded until they become blind. Bad luck for the pirates but at least the ship's crew wouldn't have to kill anyone. A powerful narrow beam microwave emitter could also be a viable alternative.

My father works for the merchant Navy and he once explained me exactly this, how to fight pirates without weapons. For him, the easiest method is to hire a security guard or two until the zone is crossed. Back in 2006, when he was a chief officer on whatever ship he was working on, it was actually attacked by Somali pirates, despite the avoidance measures taken by the crew. He tells that everyone in the crew was beat up really bad and after that they robbed the captain's room and left, and then the crew had to pay the company for the losses. Almost after 18 years now, some days back, his ship went through that pirate infested zone again, but this time he as a captain had urged the company to hire a security guard. His ship crossed that EXACT same area where another Indian ship was hijacked by pirates and then the Indian Navy had to come to the rescue. He was dumbfounded when I told him this. Merchant Navy sailors are the unsung heroes of the world's economy...
The main problems with giving the crew weapons: 1. If they fail to stop them from boarding the boat but manage to kill a couple of them, guess what happens to the crew. 2.Flags of convenience, Countries like Panama arent going to give ships sailing under their registration permission to carry weapons because Countries would start blocking ships with Panama registration from entering their ports. Which would ruin the whole "Flags of Convenience" thing for Panama
Not to mention, it would enrage the Somalis even further. Moral and legal complications to follow, considering (whether on what to believe or if its true or not) that these foreign fishing companies are what led to that issue in the first place because no one's patrolling the waters due to the civil war (though that couldn't be the only factor at play here)
Somali piracy is dead, and has been for years. The UN anti privacy action also lowered the pressure from illegal fishing in Somali waters and the fish has actually come back a little, thus fishing is actually an option now for the people with boats. The Houtis are not pirates, they are attacking ships/trade for a political reason. Ie it's a war. A whole other can of worms
They could also get sued, by sacraficing a small ship and letting it get near a large ship and feigning ignorance that the small ship didn't understand the instructions and got to close to it. Because in the end, there is no laws concerning boats getting near each other.
If piracy is going to be an issue I am surprised we are not using convoy tactics. A single frigate or destroyer could effectivley defend a dozen or so large container ships, particularly if it had an onboard attack helicopter.
The pirates would get skilled and well equipped enough to succeed sometimes then you would have worse pirates to deal with
@@nothanks9503what kind of pirates have firepower to take on a modern Destroyer? Usually a DD will only use small arms fire against these guys, but if push comes to shove then they will use their bigger guns, and no hand held weapon on a raft is going to be able to compete with that

@@nothanks9503 molotovs only work on a tank if it's badly positioned, terrain plays a vital role. If it's out in a clear open area then they don't work nearly as well. The reason they work is because they can stall/ruin the engine through the vents, or cook the crew if it manages to find its way inside the camped compartment, neither scenario really applies to a Destroyer A warship has the entire flat open sea, it's going to be kind of hard to sneak some kind of improvised explosive to it. some private security operate by waiting outside of port in international waters with a chase boat or tender sized vessel that can be winched on board and gets picked up by the ship. then when they arrive at one of the destination ports, they take all weapons with them and go onto the boat and sits in international water while the ship goes in to port, then the ship would pick them up again on the way out. that way the weapons never enter sovereign borders. Also for one way journeys or if the ship only hired for part of their route, once nearing the last port the security guards would just chuck the weapons overboard into the ocean just before entering sovereign waters, ride the ship into port and take a flight back home. cost of the weapons would be built into the fees.

I think you forgot the most important reason crews aren't armed. If pirates believe crews are armed they will shoot to kill. The belief that crews aren't armed is what allows most hijackings to be bloodless.
They don’t get much money for dead hostages
Robbery on the unarmed: everybody walks away, someone with more money and someone with heavier pants and no wallets. Robbery on unarmed people: at least one dead party, possibly both.
If pirates believe the crew is armed, 9.9 times out of 10 they'll just leave and find a ship from a country that doesn't allow guns instead.
It's that same unarmed policy which made them an easy target in the pirates' minds, too. It's just like why gun-free zones don't work to stop mass shootings. The only difference between my example is their objective. One is for profit, the other is mental sickness. However, the reasoning why both an unarmed ship and a gun-free zone are targeted are the same: an unarmed target is and will always be easier and preferable in the eyes of any aggressor.
Actually not, you’re gonna risk your life firing back on a small unstable boat at another person behind cover on a large stable ship? The whole point of piracy was to make a living while being alive. If you kill people on board you are giving the navy the green light to take you out to prevent more hostage deaths, that is if you don’t die approaching and climbing the ship safely under fire
Pirates upping their game to helicopter intrusion just brought a whole new level to the game. Boats only monitor on the X and Y axis, now they gotta watch the Z axis too, and even still, they gotta track it from a long ways away!
Isn't the Y axis like the vertical axis?
@@maximeleninja4029 When viewing a 2D space you only use the X and Y axis, 2D space here being the ocean, North, South, East, and West. In a 3D space you add the Z axis, the axis coming right at or away from the viewer, as viewed in a 2D space. So, in the case of the "2D" ocean, the sky and deep sea below. This is what I was referring to. Granted, yes, with sonar, I believe ships are also monitoring the -Z axis, but not so much the +Z axis (the sky).

Pirates attacking a military vessel: Pirates attacking a civilian vessel:"Don't worry, they are taking care of the 'wetting' part already."
Your comparison of asking teachers to carry firearms is an interesting comparison. In both cases the idea is not to simply arm all teachers or in this case all crew members. The idea is make training available and anyone who has completed training, or who has prior police or military experience can choose to carry a firearm. In addition you would also hire specific security personnel for this purpose and to oversee ongoing training. One reasonably trained sniper would be a hell of a deterrent.
But keeping teachers disarmed has worked out so well in the past! Yeah, how dare you bring logic into what is clearly supposed to be an emotional discussion.
@@harrkevno it's a stupid idea. Texas has been trying to get armed teachers in whole for over a decade and you see how well that works out.
I believe the teachers being able to carry guns is an optional legal stance. Not mandatory. They can if they are able and want to. Not made to. Similar to the crew, the legality of having one is what they want to solve. More like if the crew wanted to they could, the multiple countries makes it tougher.

too many laws protecting the bad guy
As for your can of worms - you made your point very well. Thank you for this compelling story and look into how this has been working
As for that can of worms, allowing teachers to carry is not mandating that they must. If some want to and feel that it is their responsibility, there is no good reason why it should be prohibited if they are competent and their gun is properly secured and concealed on their person. If other teachers don't want to, and don't feel it is their reasonability, it was not proposed that we force them to.

Some large grit/sand blasting media added to the high pressure water might be interesting. Or a slick lubricant that could be sprayed on the deck. Also, I imagine the ship's engine/alternator can generate an awful lot of current, something that might arc to hand held metallic object. I can at least see a fun ship defense game/simulator in there somewhere 😂
As much as that sounds effective unfortunately for other reasons it's not very practical, putting in abrasive grit into the water cannons will increase wear on the ships protective coatings leading to more maintenance, slimy grease on the decks can be time-consuming too clean up after the pirates are gone and can potentially create environmental issues if it finds its way into the ocean, and energizing parts of the ship or the water around the ship with stray currents from the main generators can be a safety hazard to the crew, lead to more electrical issues as well as increase the rate at which below the water line components corrode, you don't want your prop shafts or your through-hole fittings corroding. das good cuz if u stood behind the engines then youd get FULL ON BLOWN AWAY, so yeah, what were you doing behind a KC135 Anyway?
@@TheBananaRaamiz it was at a nato airbase in Germany, the kc135 was positioned all the way at the beginning of the runway and the wasn’t far from the fence It was at geilenkirchen Air base Runway 27
As an American I will say that I had plenty of teachers basically say “ it’s our job to teach and make this a safe learning environment “ when the topic was brought up at my school on whether teachers should have guns or not .
im a somali pirate and this videos was very educative for us
Do you know the story of USS Dwight D Eisenhower vs Greenpeace? Palma, Spain 1988. Greenpeace wished to protest their "dislike" of nuclear power and weapons by graffiti tagging Ike's hull. Needless to say, the crew could not allow that. After all, the deck apes would have to spend a lot of time hanging over the side to clean it up. So, 2.5" fire hoses were rigged as water cannons, with M2 machine guns as back up, of course. Swamped Greenpeace's little zodiac boats and flooded their engines. They had to row back to shore. Ike remained graffiti free.
Cargo ships in that area should have guided missiles, rail guns and a strict Take No Prisoners policy.
Sure. You paying for the extra cost of all that equipment, including training and maintenance? Shipping is a low margin high volume business. If you start adding military costs, it’s not competitive with the other providers.
@@Justanotherconsumer After a few more minutes of History automated self-aiming 50 mm guns will be mounted on these ships. No training required, automatic targetting and firing. As long as the U.S. is exploiting third world child labour to save 75% of its production and labour costs, the U.S. Military should pay for and mount those defensive weapons. OR, stop exploiting 3rd World Countries, which isn't going to happen. .... IMHO
what other providers? it's ether this, or the cargo plane, we both know, we ain't getting railroads across Mutiple countries@@Justanotherconsumer
Nope according to Karen logic just make a big sticker that says "This is a gun free zone"
Many large cargo ships have some kind of a secret panic room (that might look like a normal container) there the crew can hide in case boarding of the ship could not be avoided.
Looks like a normal container? Ah now THAT should work! previously i thought it a dumb idea, but "security through obscurity" - esp on a ship with hundreds n thousands of containers...!
They mentioned this. To call a mayday and then hide, since pirates generally can't operate the ship
i know this isnt about the vid(the security camera part), but for anyone that thinks of putting security cameras on your house, keep this in mind before buying some that are easily visible. a lot of people think of only one part of the camera, like " criminals will see them and think, i shouldnt risk it" other criminals will think "what are they trying to protect?...might be worth robbing" if you get some, dont get any that they can see.
Love the tangle part
This Rust IRL ☠️
Of course, the irony in all of this is that none of these measures are as effective as a relatively small detail in possession of an assortment of small arms.
A reminder that somalian piracy became an issue because large multinationals overfished somalian waters so much that locals who subsisted from fishing lost their livelyhood causing many to turn to piracy as they already had boats and there was no longer an opportunity to earm through fishing
This explains why all the billionaires are interested in Hovercraft and Submarines.
The one dude who was on fire after the traccer round was fired got me dead😂😂😂😂
I believe the insurance companies that insure those ships and cargo don't like them having armed personal either.
Some of the insurance companies only care about the cargo and vessel and really aren't concerned with the loss of replaceable crew.
Well, if they would be armed they would be more likely to get injured or die either by accident or in combat and who is going to pay for that?
@@946towguy2 that doesn't make sense. They have to pay out life insurance to the sailors' families
@@IlIlllIIIllIIlIIlII Many sailors have to buy their own life insurance and pay the premiums.
@@IlIlllIIIllIIlIIlII Also, mostt life insurance policies do not cover acts of war, insurrection or piracy.
"Sir, we're being boarded!" "Give em a shower"
As soon as merchant ships are allowed to have lethal small caliber defenses, piracy will stop.
Helicopters don't like water cannons any more than boats do... I imagine that you'll start seeing automated water laser anti-aircraft defenses. Let me tell you, you definitely don't want to get hit by one of those... Especially if you're in a helicopter. Water lasers make those other hoses look like garden tap hoses.
This only works if you notice the helicopter in time.
@@harrkev Choppers aren't exactly silent.
5:54 it isnt an Israeli owned ship, one of the shareholders is Israeli. and you didnt mention either that none of the crew were Israeli and are still kidnapped
Water is a strong weapon against Devil Fruit users, so it makes sense
Imagine a world where the attacker has more rights than the defendant.. oh wait you dont.
Yeah, but Dead pirates don't pirate no more.
This was a veryy looonngg "it's not what you think"
Look at me 👀 I am the captain now
My father told me that they hire guns for hire before they get close to Somalia, he said they usually hire a team of 3 or 4, fortunately they haven't encountered such pirates yet, but he told me that the cargo ship that was at the front of them got hijacked 2 weeks prior when they arrived at their destination, i forgot which port though
They do, now costs about a 100k a passage. Quite a sweet job, riding ships back an forth in a dry hot climate for a 1000 bucks a day, tax free.
Here are some other ideas: - remote operated machine guns in small turrets, 1 or 2 per side. - allow the crew to arm themselves if they wish - facilitate use of armed contractors. - loads of razorwire - distribute costs of these things among concerned governments and ship owners who want to use the passage owners with a common pot
I've seen prototypes of a CIWS mounted in a 20' shipping container which could be remotely operated by satellite link.
You’ve solved it mate lmao
