  • GSP is one of the few fighters to play the UFC system well. He came in, did what he had to to get on top, stayed on top as a huge Canadian draw, broke a record, made millions, got out while he was ahead, and then came back to take another belt at middle weight before he was even out of his prime. He did it his way.

  • Interesting comments by dana regarding GSP wanting to take a break. I wonder why dana didn't feel the same way about conner's long break and refusal to defend his title. I don't wonder actually, because dana's true feelings, motives, desires, and what truly drives him is so easy and clear to see. It's awesome to see people not afraid of calling it as they see it, and not being afraid of the ufc in doing so. Ufc will do whatever it takes, robbing the real Champs of fights they deserve through hard work in the process, to protect and ride the shirt tails of false paper champs.

I think he gives people chances, he gives people the benefit of the doubt, but you can see that he has ZERO tolerance for people breaking his trust. He goes WAY too far sometimes, and in those moments, it's hard to like him, but if you dig around, you found more positive stories about his generosity than you do his being an asshole - although he definitely can be ass for sure (His unending hatred of Ariel Helwani, for instance) For me, you can learn a lot about him from "Dana White: Lookin' For a Fight." He lets them film, and then lets them publish even when he looks like a wuss, or when he looks bad, etc. If he was truly an ego maniac douche bag, he would never let us see that side of him.

  • Back in the day Dana would pride himself on having the best fighters in the world. Even with an ego as big as his he'd put it aside for what was best for MMA and fought tirelessly to legitimize our sport. Then it happened, maybe around Brock or Chael? Or maybe it was just a gradual shift, or maybe he had outside sources pouring stress on but skill and talent was no longer viewed as important as charisma and drawing power. He went from being the hero of MMA to a Vince McMahon-esque promoter. Equal parts sleaze, ego and shady business tactics pushing our beloved MMA closer to pro wrestling or boxing shenanigans.

Oddly enough, post USADA, Werdum hasn't been the same fighter either. So, for most of his career Werdum hasn't exactly been a top ranked fighter, let alone champion. he beat Cain and Fedor (2 legends of the sport) around the same time, and in one organization that did not test for PEDs, but now can't win against lesser names? There's something suspicious about that, don't you think?

    • I agree. The only reason for GDR fighting Holly was for the winner to fight Cyborg. There was no reason for the division otherwise. It's not like when George St. Pierre had fought dozens of times and decided he was done fighting period. He got paid peanuts many a time, had sponsors pay him more than the UFC, and was a huge part in the UFC becoming what it is. He owed Dana nothing, and Dana's reaction there is a black mark on Dana's otherwise impressive record.

    • This was how I felt as well. Cheated in the fight then cheated the fans, ufc and Cyborg out of a title fight she agreed to. Worse still - promised many times before the fight that she would fight Cyborg if she won, then immediately in the post fight octagon interview starts making excuses about her hand. Disgusting, worst champion ever

    • Honestly, I'm glad DJ is making money elsewhere, with fans that can actually appreciate him. It's a shame the UFC under-utilized him and the entire flyweight division (that division was stuck on Fight Pass/prelims for like 80% of its existence despite the immense talent within, and the vast majority of haters hadn't even seen a non-title flyweight fight before having loud opinions), but DJ should have a lot of good competition in the East.

    • 100%! He treats so many of his fighters like shit and props up fighters he is friends with especially Connor and let him get away with holding up 2 divisions, has always paid him better then any one else, let him go box and even worse let him get away with so many crimes including attacking a bus full of fighters and causing serious damage and possibly it could of gotten way worse if he wasn't stopped. Also he has constantly given a career to Matt Serra and keeps on getting him jobs but if you are any fighter he doesn't like even a little bit for reasons as stupid as he doesn't like your face he will absolutely do everything he can to destroy your career and legacy, the weird part is all of the GOATs her tries to bury them and only Jon Jones got favorable treatment. Too bad Zuffa isn't around to rain him in any more....I can't wait till he retires.
