Pro VFX artist here, these are all great tips! To add to the point at 5:00, in VFX we work in a linear gamma space rather than log, with all assets and footage being converted on import, then all converted back into the original log space on export. This makes black matching and blending MUCH easier and is essential for accurate composites. Look up linear workflow for your particular software to learn more!
I'm studying to become a comp artist and that's something I've been wondering about for a while, thanks for the clarification! I thought there might be a conversion process like this.
Yeah I learned this the hard way, often "colour correcting" my Log footage first then bringing it in After Effects, the "colour grade" itself would happen in Resolve or Premiere after the VFX were complete, so it's a similar function but what I didn't realise was... there's an easier way.
@@AustinThomasFilms software like nuke and flame are all linear. It makes the most sense when comping and also trust me when I say ... Black levels not matching is one of the most common pieces of feedback. If you can do that well from the beginning.... You will go far
PRECOMP !!!!!!!!
Colour management has always been a sticky point for me in AE. Doing some test now with S-Log footage and exporting back out to S-Log. Anyone with recommended settings for AE would be greatly appreciated
Josh has been watered. I wonder how much he'll grow?
Hes grown alot over the years. major acting skills
Much love from Nigeria RYAN!!!
Home boy
My man 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
What's that?
My pipu ❤
Guys. Really love everything you’re continuing to do and what you’re giving to the indie community. Really hope the feature side takes off for you. You guys deserve it. Ryan, you’re a good man!
I'm glad to say we used a lot of these in advance for the last few films we did. The coloured lighting wasn't perfect but on the most recent one we used a lot of Aputure MC lights to do things like fire and enhance what would be an off screen flare. A lot more of VFX comes down to planning in advance. *Personal recommendation:* If you've got an actual film to shoot, I highly recommend having a dedicated VFX Artist or, at least someone who knows how they work in another job, to note down what shots will require it in advance and what to do to make it blend better. So much of VFX needs to happen before the footage is even in your computer.
Ryan, some excellent tips. Thank you! Also... kudos to both you and Josh for keeping in "character" during the watering shots... Josh is a real trooper! Loved it.
Shout out to the most useful and informative channel on youtube. Please keep doing it guys, you are the hero we need
Love the constant humor that I have watched for the last 10 years on youtube
I saw this channel a bunch of years ago...lol maybe 8...glad to see you guys are still around and with the same amazing quality
One of your best recent videos in my opinion, thanks for all this!
I love listening to podcasts on Spotify. Also great video I don’t think I ever watched a film riot video without learning something new
The “rain” shots were absolute gold!
This makes me want to get back into VFX again.
Yo...LOVED that Color Correction blog post. Like, had some "ah ha" moments when I needed them most.
Love this! I do vfx almost on a daily and these are definitely some great tips!
Excellent info. Gentle reminders for some.I didn't think to use a blending mode on assets...boy that looks to make a huge difference. Thanks!
those fire VFX effect are LITTT 100% matching
Spotify for podcasts all day. Super convenient and got tired of filling up my phone storage with podcast episodes. :) Great video, btw - thanks!
LOLOL. That water scene in the backyard. Just epic. It's been a long time since I laughed that hard. Thanks for the laugh and for the great tips.
The blog had great tips about light. Thank you
What a magnificent example to wet an actor! i wrote it down in my things to remember agenda.
Lots of good reminders in this video!
Excited about the blog! I need to check out the latest one.
As always very informative and helpful
I lost it at the dinosaur, and then again at hose, and again with those amazing fire assets 🔥. Also, I listen to podcasts through Overcast
You gotta water your Josh, or he'll wilt.
Thank You!!! This is very helpful
Thank you for your material!
these are some really great tips. there's a lot of things I hadn't considered.
Thank you sir! I learned a lot from you! Keep creative!
Great tips!!! Yeah Spotify is my go to for your podcasts!
these rain bits are *so* damn hilarious. i'm sitting in front of my pc, dying from laughter
I listen to podcasts that are placed on KZhead. I am able to Bluetooth the audio through my hearing aids and listen while I am working or doing projects around the house.
My brother is getting curious about film making now and asked how I know some of this stuff. I told him that I regularly attend classes at FRU..you know..Film Riot University. Killed me with that whole outside umbrella thing btw!! LMAO
Hey I’m not sure if you guys have done this yet but would you guys be able to do a short tutorial on how to get a good lightsaber effect? Just an easy simplified one as most of the tune it’s either way too complicated or not great looking on other channels. Thank y’all for giving us these awesome tips!
Definitely spotify, I tend to listen to the podcast in the car on my way into the office and then i can seamlessly transition from my phone to my desktop web player without skipping a beat.
amazing work brother
great video thanks for the lol and the tips
I literally am doing VFX work right now and this video just came out and I just
These are really good tips thank you so much. Now I just need to learn after effects
Excellent episode as always! Also, I still just use the a Apple Podcasts App.

Chkadir hna a jamal ?😂
4:13 that rain shot looks really convicing
Another great video
I listen to podcasts on Spotify because I find it to be the most convenient for both PC and phone.
Love this chanel❤️
Much love from Nigeria 🇳🇬
It’s funny how people get here early and comment about the video before they even watch it 😂
quality as always
I listen to podcasts on Apple podcasts! Also, great episode Ryan!
Spotify is probably the best platform for me when it comes to podcast consumption. But I also use PocketCasts sometimes since it's available in Alexa and I can start where I left off in a different device.
Boom💥 thank you for tips
Thank you, Ryan!
This is very effective even right now because I just filmed a visual scene of some one falling through a wormhole.
I'm early! And this reminds me of the old episodes so far/
Always inspiring
Hi film riot, can you please bring back the Monday challenges of something similar, seeing challenges is always Inspiron
Grading is usually done before the shots are ingested at the Vfx studio. Then the studio is sent a sequence based lut which is never baked into the footage, but only transforms the footage when you look at it so if the client changes their mind, you’re not screwed and don’t have to re do work. Then the client usually does some per shot tweaks in DI and destroys the work you did by pushing everything to the max lol
Great video, and I absolutely love the look of the chapter titles. How did you do this?
I really love your videos and have been following and learning After Effects for about 5-6 years now. I was wondering if anybody can recommend a school or some place to learn Visual FX to achieve this kind of skill level? While the tutorials are certainly helpful I would really love to find somewhere to get a comprehensive education in this type of work. Thank you in advance and keep up the great work! You guys are truly inspiring!
This is oh so great
Nice job film riot. i am from ethiopia
whenever you are posting a video, I'm always waiting to see it.. ♥️♥️♥️
This is video iam waiting for
*thanks a lot for this video*
I haven't watched any of your videos since about 2012. Glad to see Bammy Wham guy is still good. Want you to bring back Turbulent...whatever it was called lol
4:08 two grown men getting wet in the backyard HAHAHAHAH
This has probably been asked! But have you guys at film riot ever thought about moving from AE to nuke? If so what stopped you from using it and staying with AE?
Super
07:10 I already lost it at the first water scene, but that straight up killed me😂😂
For Podcasts my go-to places are Spotify and Soundcloud
am ready for the race
Great video
Tip 1 failed, my grandma didn't want to flicker a flashlight in my eye
great video, if i may ask can you do a review on the a7s3, no one as done a review of the 16 bit raw that it can do. can you guys do it for us please.
hey Ryan can you make a video on how you delegate all the tasks for a short movie. please!
Y'all should make like a 3 or 5 mini-episode series with superpowers 👁👄👁 Hands down!!!
Please make a tutorial on how to hide VFX mistakes as more as possible like what camera angles will defocus on some of the mistakes that are been made !!
Hypothetically, if someone created a script for a new short film, would you guys help with the film editing? Cause you guys are good!
Naming your layers is not always for collaborators! When you want to remember how you made an effect or decide to keep working on an old comp, you will thank your past self!
amazing
Thank you so much for this! I bought this video out for the ball of light effect for a wizard chick I'm shooting. Do you know of an effect for a ball of light or streak of light shooting skyward?
Tip #6: Remember to export your full res title bumpers and not just the low res previews.
Anchor is a great place to listen to podcasts
Great Video! Where you have your electric ⚡️ titles???
Spotify is my now go to.
Ryan right now : "A million dollars..!!! I'm participating.." :)
WOW! 1 million
ty guys
THX
Here we go again. I’ll try a Jurassic park theme this time for the competition.
Love from punjab, india guys 😍😍😍🔥
Hello, what is the effect called on your text transitions? Is it 16 bit text or something with a tech screen glow? Do you make a tutorial on creating that asset, or can you recommend any?
This is where the fun begins.
8:09 when you don't even try, but you still thing it's a masterpiece hahaha I love it.
When I saw y’all were doing a blog, my thoughts were, “I love you!” KEEP IT UP!
thank you sooo much Rayan colony
Podcast on iTunes for sure.
