She spent 200 hours building a boat. This moment made it all worth it.
After two months of building, Emily's dinghy was ready to sail.
In this video, Emily finishes sanding, varnishing, and the sail. Then we take it sailing, and show the happy ending and scenes from the entire process. Enjoy!
Watch the whole build here: • Emily Builds a Sailboat
Over the period of two months, Emily built a lightweight wooden boat, to be used as a sailing, rowing, and motoring dinghy for S/V Temptress. This model is a variation on an Eastport Nesting Pram (plans by Chesapeake Light Craft - CLCBoats.com). It weighs approximately 75 lbs, and is just under 8 feet long, made mainly of okoume mahogany.
We are incredibly grateful to Chesapeake Light Craft for sending us free plans for this dinghy ($89 value), so we could share the build process with our KZhead viewers. Thank you to Ed and the team at CLC!

I've waited so long...I don't want to watch it otherwise what else is there to look forward to in life!
Aye m8’s, What a relief to finally see it ready and finished! This might be the pram to be most proud of, ever!
Well now, that's a very nice dinghy.
This what it looks like when an artist builds a boat. Nice job Emily.
Now this one needs to be added to the "show us your dinghy" review series!
Emily, there need to be far more women like you out there. Especially on sailing boats everyone needs to be able to do any work in case the other one is sick or injured laying down in the cabin. For the safety of both of you. Great job!
I really enjoy your boat build, lots of BST, HAPPY ADVENTURERS To you and clark
i’m a retiredProfessionalWoodworkerwho has built and Restored Wooden Boats a great Homeowners quality tool for Sanding in tight areas is the Black and Decker Mouse it is a vibrating RandomOrbital unit that is shaped similiar to a clothes Iron like a modified Tringle the sandpaper is Velcro attached and kind of Pricey but the machine itself is fairly inexpensive and i think Walmart sells them as well as many other Hardwate stores i will admit i restored a 1964 Chris Craft CabinCruiser and discovered this tool because all my many Professional Sandersi had at the time would not reach into some areas and that was the only option i had available at that time it actually suprised me that it worked because i had hundreds of dollars worth of other Machines with me that would not BTW you picked a good boat to build as your first Wooden one to build Chesapeake Light Craft is a great Company and Designer for First timer Boats ! Imlived inMaryland for over 35 years and they are Legendary Boats on and around the Chesapeake Bay some of their Skiffs and other boats are used as Fundraising projects for Father Son Teams and similiar things i actually have one i aquired for a Dinghy that needed some restoration i did and a motor i had as well some Elbow grease and painting and she looked like a new boat i have plans on building some others in the future
Thank you Craig.
Working ,doing ,in this way will bring you far in life. Wonderfull good pesonellity. Great. Wish you all the best. Theo from the Netherlands
I can't believe you varnished the entire thing with a 1" brush!! Congratulations, you saw it through and got it done! I'm on my 4th because I just can't stop myself. I admire your guts for going getting plans and fabricating all of the wood parts yourself.
Beautiful! I love all of your added details. The rope rub rail is a great idea. I built a CLC Wood Duck kayak. It was a great learning experience and I love paddling it. It took me 7 months to build, though. I look forward to building a sailing dinghy.
Just a beautiful boat built by a beautiful person with a great coach. How can you beat that?
Yeah, I finally got to see you finish your project. I liked the part at the beginning of the video when you had sawdust on your glasses than you took off your safety glasses and you had sawdust on your eye lashes. But you did a magnificent job. Don't you just love the feeling of completing a project and standing back and admiring it. Great job.
And this is why I use swim goggles for fiberglass work! Lol!
Anything fibreglassed should be covered with flowcoat or gelcoat
Emily, its was very enjoyable watching you build F.I.N. The ONLY nesting, not nesting, nesting pram. After watching a few videos of other builders of this pram, I noted you hadn't read the plans, but these are lessons not mistakes. Great determination, dedication and skills too. The jigsaw queen! My plans are now on the way; same boat (I'll check the nesting part too) and maybe I'll record my build to help the next person; and get some tips too. I learnt a lot from watching you, so thank you for making this series. A year on and you're still inspiring others. Wherever you go next, if people ask what you do, you can say "I'm a boat build".
At last! The final episode of the dinghy saga! Well done, Emily! You're inspiring me to get back out into the shed and get to work finishing my Chameleon Dinghy, now the weather is finally getting warm enough for epoxy work. How are the repairs going?
I just came across your video. It was awesome. I want to watch the series of the complete build. I hope F.I.N is still sailing straight.
Sure is
Looks great with the varnish, especially the decorative cutouts on the bulkhead. I used lots of the tips in your videos to help build mine. The CLC manual is really good, but your videos helped a lot especially since I hadn’t built a boat before. Thanks for doing all of the extra work of making and posting the videos!
Sailboat Story captain also built a dinghy and it took about 3 months full time, but, like you, ended up with exactly what he wanted in a beautiful little boat. I learned a lot from your videos - thank you.
Excellent work look excellent.. I really like the dagger board plug and the ornate designs..
You had a vision. It wasn't in a television.👍
SUPER BEAUTY!!!!!
That’s so awesome guys! Very happy for you Emily! :) So much hard work was put into that! My stepdad has also built historical ships that are in museums around the country. Have fun with that sailboat! :)
Fantastic, very inspiring, might try this myself.
Great job can't wait to see it in the water👍
you built the boat the same color as your hair! (then you painted it!)
Beautiful boat! Any lessons learned? What would you do different?
MY GAWD, what a beautiful dingy. Going to have to watch the whole series
I am a “stitch and glue” addict. I’ve built 2 kayaks, and have decided to build a CLC pram with the extra marine plywood I have. I do not know how to sail, and I think the pram will fit the bill. I purchased too much a few years ago for a skiff I built-finding marine plywood is difficult or non-existent in the land locked State of Idaho. Thank you for the series, and showing us how it was all done!
This is a great boat to learn to sail on. Very stable do you can forget the boat and concentrate on the sail and rudder. Also rows great
Wow, that was nice - Bravo Emily!
Wow, i waited for so long about the continuation of this dinghy making. The very first reason of me subscribing earlier.
Nice work Emily💖🏅
An impressive project, well executed, and a wonderful result. Congrats!
Emily that was awesome, you did a fantastic job, thank you so much for sharing your adventure, you have inspired me and I am sure many.
Really great. Thx for sharing :)
Inspiring. Sail F.I.N. with joy and pride. Emily, I am so proud of you.
That turned out so well. It had to be tremendously satisfying to sail it for the first time. Well done ma'am!
Fantastic!
Well done Em. Most of us dream of doing what you have done. I hope it inspires many more to do the same.
great work - cool!
Nice!
Awesome 🎉
Very Nice! Glad to see this series complete!
Awesome
Congratulations.. what a great job!! 😃 Thanks for sharing your journey with us. Oklahoma USA ❤️
Well done!!👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Wow! Well done 😎
Great job Emily!
Fantastic
Cool boat, good job. Sailing Bacchus used one of these for their primary dingy. I miss that channel.
Great job
🐠Time well spent!
Great job, Emily.
Well done. Looks a great little boat :)
Great encouragement to get things startet.
excellent video.
Awesome Emily 🐣
Well done awesome job 👌
What a beautiful little boat! You did an amazing job!
You are amazing! What a wonderful job you did! Thank you for sharing your journey with us!!!
Very impressive indeed. A fine sailing dinghy.
Thanks so much for this episode. ❤ It was like a end to a series so many of us enjoyed. Nice for the sailing footage also.
I’m emotion filled! 🤗 Well done, inspirational & joyous! ~Mere
Thanks Emily for a great series! I have loved to watch your progress. Surely there must be a next project for you. Can't wait to see that! Big congratulations on finisshing F.I.N. She looks to sail beutifully!
The satisfaction of a job well done.
One of the designs I have considered. Interested in seeing more on how practical it is at anchor.
Aaaawwwwwwwww.... I love FIN ❤ 😍
Nicely Done!
Thanks James
Nice job Emily.. that did not look easy at all. Boat looks great!
Great videos of a great boat and build. I was thinking of building one, but we are much heavier than you, so we decided to build the Passagemaker instead. Then we found a used PM and refinished it instead. I think sometimes it may have been easier to do a new build instead of refinishing! CLC makes some fine kits
It looks fabulous! Think about all the DIY know how you picked up! I am envious.
Yes, Emily now does fiberglass projects on the big boat alone. -C
Well done!
Thanks
@@EmilyAndClark I'm thinking of building one - how do you like it as a yacht tender (is it really "tippy", can two adults really fit in it?).
For us, it's not a practical dinghy for two full sized adults to use every day. But no, it's not very tippy at all. In fact, we have not been able to tip it over yet. But we wouldn't want to carry a bunch of groceries or full gas cans in it. CLC does make larger dinghies that would probably make great tenders. -E
@@EmilyAndClark That's kinda what I figured - thanks for the feedback and sail safe!
Clark here. I think that little boat could safely carry a lot. Not fast mind you but it has abilities that Emily hasn't really seen. She has always had a 12 foot boat to do big jobs with but in the past I've done a lot in boats like hers. It's all about your personal requirements.
I’m about to build an Eastport prom and I hope I have the patience and skill you displayed in your series. Good job.
Thank you Richard, I'm sure it will be a rewarding experience for you and I hope you like yours as much as I like mine.
Hey, nice job, Emily !
Thanks Rog
Emily, you have sailed with your Pram since November 2019. What do you think today of this sailboat?

And this. kzhead.info/sun/ZKxwY7aRgpimqWw/bejne.html
You might enjoy watching our old videos. Very few of them are something that needs to be watched "fresh"
Bravo Zulu Emily 👌
Yay!! Thanks so much for this closure! The boat looks awesome, and what an achievement. This build brought me to your channel in the first place. How did you manage to keep F.I.N. out of all the videos since??
It's been difficult! Haha. FIN made a brief appearance in our Prepped video a while back. We'll make up for it now. :)
WOW. Not sure if I could do this. Probably not.
Never know until you try.
I would consider hiring you to build houseboats.
👍!!!
👏👏👏
It is 2023 awesome project and a lot talent are you starting any new projects
Always something. Developing board games now. Check out "small furry games" on KZhead
Well that was easy content of past posts ... just take a break ... you deserve it!
Sure, no biggie. Just hunting down, organizing and sorting through about 15 hours of 2-year-old footage from 3 different cameras, adding music, syncing clips, adding titles...SUPER easy project. There's a reason this series took me 2 years to finish. The videos took longer to create than the boat! -E
@@EmilyAndClark I think you may have misinterpreted my comment or, more likely, my comment was poorly composed. I remain constantly amazed at the amount of effort and time it must take to first film and then edit and post-produce the content associated with your channel ... all on a weekly deadline. Certainly a full time job on top of all the jobs associated with boat life and no vacation in sight.
Cool little boat. How does it handle the growth in the sea ?
It has bottom paint but most nights it's hauled up on Temptress' side so it's stored out of the water.
Nice work! Did you find you had to add any ballast? Q
No. This kind of boat doesn't use ballast. It's all about hull shape and where the captain sits.
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
how did you attach the rope rubrail??
She opened the rope a bit and ran a screw through one strand such that the head is inside the closed rope. I was kinda proud of that idea I developed for a boat I designed and built years ago. It held up well. -Clark
😂 FIN ALLY ❣️
Haha! Looking back, I should have painted "FIN" on the transom, zoomed in on it and made it the final scene, like an old movie. 🎥 -E
@@EmilyAndClark ❣️
isn't this the boat emily built a year or more ago? nevermind, i just saw a date 😃 but why show it now?
The series took longer to make than the boat. Just finished editing it because people have been asking for me to finally show the finished boat. :)
Nice story but not a fan of the music choice...
Yes, the « music » is really not necessary !
Great job Emily!
