  • Might also be interested to note that autistic people are considerably more likely to have Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (I believe it's around 10% with the NT prevalence being less than 1%), and AFAB folks with EDS are also much more likely to have terrible periods, gynecological illnesses and weird hormonal shifts.

  • Going on birth control really helped my PMDD symptoms. I was to the point where I felt (what passes for)normal only one week out of a five week cycle. You add my sensory issues and autism symptoms to the PMDD and I think it was only by a miracle of God that my brain didn't explode or something else equally bad.

  • My mom had really bad PMDD, her mood swings were so intense. Her menopause symptoms were immunity disorders and more massive continuous mood swings. So glad my mom's done with cycles. I'm lucky, and don't have PMDD. I work really hard to listen to my sensitivities, as they're ones I usually can find a solution for, again, super lucky.

  • “I’m not sure if this is interesting, fascinating, or just plain weird.” I’d call it heart-breaking. 😢 PMDD is excruciating to live with. Most of us already struggle to deal with our “regular” ND sensitivities - imagine PMDD turning the dial up even higher. Further food for thought: how many “hysterical” women back in the day thrown into insane asylums were suffering from issues like this? 😭 Cheers for spreading awareness about this! 🙏

  • I want to put something positive here for autistic women fearing what menopause will do. I’ve found life a good bit more manageable once I was completely through menopause. Everything Orion said was my lived experience, from period onset at age 11 onwards. I’m 55 (diagnosed AuADHD at 51), and fully post menopausal for about 5+ years (it dragged out for years!) Although menopause was very difficult, and made regulation much harder at the time, I have a much clearer head now that it’s all over! I can’t be certain that everyone will experience this, but for me, it’s like I manage better with all the hormonal changes out of the way. All the positive strategies I tried unsuccessfully before are easier now, I can slow my brain down and identify my emotions and think more clearly without all that emotionality swirling around. It’s not “simple”, but definitely better than before. I hope others have had similar experiences!💜

  • Can confirm! Menopause @ 38 & autism Dx @ 47. I've always been hanging on by a thread & I knew I wasn't "normal" but I figured a personality disorder or cPTSD from being beaten as a child. When I didn't come out of the spiral for years as opposed to days, I read the DSM-5 to figure it out since my VA mental health professionals were inept. 2 yr of research into other things, figured it out, 2 more yrs to get someone to refer me for Dx. Then finally offered HRT after denying me for 9 years.

  • Estrogen is antiinflammatory because it blocks substance P (SP) a neuropeptide that is produced by sensory neurons in the nervous system. Loss of estrogen has wide ranging effects throughout the body. Estrogen replacement treatment is safe and actually decreases breast cancer in recent studies. Estrogen protects against bone loss by controlling the maturation of pre osteoclasts when mature to osteoclasts break down bone.

I could almost bank on a crash and worsening symptoms once a month. Migraines, body aches and nausea and IBS and waves of emotions... I'm 50 now and it's no better. Everyone looked at me like I was crazy for saying my periods were causing my immune issues to flare. I hope they are looking for this now because I really suffered and probably didn't have to. I hope our daughters have better Women's healthcare.

  • Now. How many of them had MTHFR anomalies? Methylation deficits? Neurotransmitter synthesis disruption?

    @MelissaThompson432@MelissaThompson43223 күн бұрын
    • I have one? Is Methylation deficit correlated with PMDD? Doctors don't even acknowledge the trait when they treat you. I take a supplement but had to argue for it. But my symptoms are not under control throughout the monthly cycle.

      @emilysnyder4857@emilysnyder485723 күн бұрын
    • @@emilysnyder4857 yes, incomplete methylation is linked with fertility and birth issues, including PMDD, PCOS, and heightened risk of miscarriage (including near-birth infant mortality) as well as neural tube defects, such as spina bifida, and differences in the physical development of the fetal brain. Methylation is the way the body synthesizes neurotransmitters, and if a process of the body involves neurotransmitters, it can be affected by genes that alter methylation. I don't want to say "this definitely causes that," but I will say there is a significant correlation between MTHFR gene SNPs and the issues we talked about.

      @MelissaThompson432@MelissaThompson43223 күн бұрын
    • That is interesting because I was born borderline Spina Bifida. So it is likely my mother also had the trait. I have been looking into things since my son's diagnosis on the spectrum. Trying to figure out where it comes from and how to manage autistic challenges. My family never acknowledged the medical challenges I experienced growing up in the 70s/80s. Medical conversations were verboten, threatening. They saw it as attention seeking. I'm starting to realize how much neglect I have experienced... Because she was neglected too. We all just accept that suffering is normal when it comes to women's health. There's only so much spinach one can eat. We need support and doctors need to be aware of this when a woman comes in describing symptoms like I have had. It's been brutal to live with this.

      @emilysnyder4857@emilysnyder485723 күн бұрын
    • @@emilysnyder4857 yes! But changing your diet and adding certain supplements can reduce your symptoms or help you manage better. After a lifetime of what amounts to malnutrition, idk how much, but certainly it's better than nothing.
