In addition to the fact that 10 years ago in an interview he said he was against the construction of this bridge. There would be a thousand more points...

I'm from the Calabrian side of the bridge (not exactly from Villa, but 15 minutes north) and people on both sides are VERY fiercely divided about the project. This is more an ideological battle than one about the structure itself. I am leftist and hate the governement, but the ones who oppose the bridge are the people on my political side because the one who really wanted the bridge more than anyone else was Berlusconi: so, it's an ideological opposition to the right which want the bridge and they come up with the weirdest arguments to avoid the bridge construction, like the protection of birds which might collide with the bridge. Yet I also need to mention two typical traits of Italians: extreme whataboutism and even more extreme pessimism. In the first case, people appeal to other urgencies like education, healthcare and local infrastructure assuming that the money spent on the bridge would be taken away from these areas; in the second one, poverty in the South has been leading people for more than a century to believe that they are not worthy enough to deserve big infrastructures or businesses, and they are very selfish to such a point that the concept of "public good" does not exist and their life is just about protecting their small garden and gaining even the smallest advantage at the expence of the community. In this sense, there's a saying in Calabrian which recites 'E chi mi ndi futti a mmia', which in English translates as 'I don't give a fuck about it'.
tell the people that if they are Sicilian or Calabrian and oppose this Savior Bridge, which will make them almost as prosperous as the Milanese, that they are imbeciles. If they are leftists, I would not be surprised, but if they are econ literate, what is wrong ith them? DO they hate Italy? To they want to keep the Sicilians and Calabrians second class citizens?
Lo sapevi che il berlusca tifava inter?
If you really care about the meridional issue, you should not be a leftist, you should be a fascist, since the politician who really made something to solve the problem was Mussolini.
It's depressing to see the situation in the southernmost part of our country. All the issues that are, by definition, deeply ingrained in our society explode there due to geography. The steep mountains of Calabria and the sea around Sicily isolate them from the rest of the country and cut them off from many trade routes, making them poor and underdeveloped, prone to fail from the start in any initiative the people living there might take. What the community there needs are infrastructures that link places to places in an efficient and effective way. The bridge should serve as the capstone that coronates a much bigger project aimed at revolutionize transportation in those two region. Of you do _only_ the bridge though, you won't solve much. My fear is that the government will start this building and, provided it gets completed and not abandoned midway, they won't upgrade the rest of the infrastructure of the regions, making the bridge kinda useless
I have been hearing about this project since my childhood. I do not believe I will see it in my lifetime.

Well done! Thank you.
it will never be done: In the executive project it is explicitly indicated that the stays (the ropes that hold the bridge up and complete the span) must be tested with specific machinery before being mounted on the bridge. To test stays approximately 5km long each, you need a machine the size of a football field and 40m high. This machinery does not exist, it must first be designed, built and then used to test the stays. So it will take at least 10 years just to have this tool operational and only then will we start building the bridge. Furthermore, the cost of the machinery was not even considered.
Your new channel name really fits your videos!
thank you :)

A bridge to replace a ferry might sound like a good idea. The real problem starts when you actually get to Sicily. To connect Messina with the rest of the major cities would be a lot more important than speeding up by 20 minutes the crossing of the strait. To get to Trapani, on the opposite side of the island, takes 3 and a half to 4 hours in the best case. Sicily desperately needs modern highways first, like the rest of Italy (at a fraction of the cost of the construction of a mega bridge across one of the areas with the highest seismic risk in the whole Mediterranean) Then eventually a bridge, but mafia still rules over there...

There were (and are) continuous "information" campaigns made by ambientalists, people of a different party, and so on.. that confuse people. Similar things happen with the nuclear power, Italy had it and does not want because of so-called environmentalists.
funny how in Sicily and Calabria still don't have good trains or transportation or even good highways that civilians can utilize, but the government isn't still pushing further the realization of this project
Another problem you don't mention is that in southern Italy people get hired because they are the cousin or the friend of a manager, not because they are qualified. The government recently requested a study report because they were worried that no valid studies had been performed. In fact, the report contained garbage, it was published by a local news agency that got hold of it. Additionally, they screwed the height of the bridge table (too low for higher ships), thus blocking about 15% of sea traffic.

Dude driving through the channel tunnel
They’ve been talking about it since I was a child. I’m 54 years old😂
I'll be 71 in July and am pretty sure I will live to drive over it.
Hopefully not. Just a waist of money. Sicily needs just better railway and highways
@@elcontes yeah and those money already assigned to the project will just vanish, i guarantee it. and do you think they're going to build a bridge that leads to nothing??
Its going to be done, but its most likely going to take a lot longer than they say it will. Italy is notoriously slow when it comes to infrastructure reforms.
6:11 "even large cruise ships could easily pass right through with no problem whatsoever" *proceeds to simulate a ship passing under the bridge that clearly collides with it*
finally we can link the two cosche
0:17 that is way far away from where the bridge is supposed to be built. That town is called Cefalù.
Try the ferries. They are nice. You can even ride a train and they load it onto the ferry. It’s nice.
when is your new update video on the line?
As an Italian I can say that we can compete with the states of the Arabian Peninsula on which abandoned project is the best.
Ma… non siamo più all’epoca dell’Impero Romano… li le cose le facevano e bene… questa è l’Italia… ho detto tutto…. Basta la parola, il nome.

im sicilian from palermo and sicily is part of the berlin-palermo high speed rail corridor, named by the european union as the n.1 most important rail corridor to be built in europe so apparently we will have high speed rail! (am’abbiriri sù fannu)
I liked the old thumbnail more with the photo 😅
okay not lying but this sound like a wild idea
The Öresund Bridge, which connects Denmark and Sweden, is 7,845 meters long. The bridge's pylons, which are the tall vertical structures supporting the main span, are 204 meters tall. The vertical clearance under the main span of the bridge, which allows ships to pass beneath, is 57 meters. The Öresund Bridge is a combined bridge and tunnel structure, specifically classified as a cable-stayed bridge.
How much are the betting rates for it flopping in some kind of way. Im usually against betting, but id make that bet lol.
I have learned to never say never, but I am sceptical that this bridge will ever be built!
Quite an amazing place to visit. Would recommend to all
They asked the company who was in charge of the projects to send more data and they sent it, but it was not understandable cuz it was corrupted. So professional
It took over 30 years to generate drawings. 2006 - 1981 = 25. Awesome math man!!
I'm strongly convinced that the only big problem and why the Messina Bridge is not built yet is the pervasive influence of organized crime, much like what plagued the Salerno-Reggio Calabria highway. The construction of the highway was marred by corruption, inefficiency, and mafia involvement, leading to skyrocketing costs and extensive delays. Similarly, the exorbitant prices for crossing ferries, often controlled by mafia-influenced companies, reflect a pattern of criminal exploitation and monopolistic practices. This deep-seated corruption and mismanagement significantly hinder large-scale infrastructure projects like the Messina Bridge, preventing their successful completion. If the bridge is ever built, it would be a significant win for the country, enhancing connectivity and economic development. However, the crime syndicates are likely to take a huge cut of the profits, perpetuating the cycle of corruption and undermining the full potential benefits of such a monumental project. And that's why any politician, corrupted or not, would be skeptical about the investment.
Picture it. Sicily. 2024…
It would be cool if they put in a bike path. Wouldn’t even be the longest bridge with a bike path. Nor would it be the first suspension bridge built in an earthquake prone area.
Needs a bike lane (or two) and at least three lanes in each direction. Plus a suspended walkway under the bridge.
Tunnels will be the best choice
To have a smooth entrance angle they need to start drilling to far away remember the sea is deeper then the Channe between the UK and France
@@Lorre982 It's deep enough to drop in concrete tubes all the way, and only on both ends do they need tunneling.
@@MySpace662 the tunnel need to start at least 20km away from the coastline in both direcions, this means loosing lots of time connecting the two city, you start 20km away from Reggio Calabria driving along the tunnel, arriving 20km away from Messina and going back 20km to Messina. Between the tectonic plate and 3 active vulcanos is not a good idea drilling.
@@Lorre982 Nothing is impossible in engineering: kzhead.info/sun/p7Krg7mDqahmnmw/bejne.html
@@Lorre982 Only the train tunnel needs smooth slopes. Road traffic can handle steep slopes.
not sure i'd want to see the end of the last train ferry, which such a bridge would undoubtedly bring about. if it's ever built.
❤️
Since that bridge would close the gap to an utmost south of europe, better think of it as an italian piece of europe all europeans should be proud of. However, thinking in ratio of GDP connected by that brige versus cost of, all of a sudden the project appears as rather expensive - especially in comparison to the very ratio of GDP connected by the eurotunnel and its cost.
They are forced to do so for the Mattei plan, the plan is for enormous energy resources and semi-finished products to arrive in Sicily from Africa and the Mediterranean and which must quickly supply all the industries along Italy.
Is it gonna eventually fall like the others?
yeah this is either never getting finished and if it ever does it's going wayyyyy over budget
Any new updates on NEOM and other megaprojects in Saudi-Arabia?
Why is Rio-Antirrio suspension bridge in Greece at 2,880m not mentioned in the longest bridges list?
So, Salvini wanted to divide Italy and now he is going to unite it with a Bridge, in South of Italy😂😂😂😂
I’m from Messina, and personally I don’t like the idea of the bridge. Here we have some of the most beautiful beaches in the entire world, and the bridge will contribute to destroying them.
I swear they don't change the thumbnail
I understand that this concept has been shut down many times because it doesn't make sense economically, structurally, or environmentally. Same issue with Strait of Gibraltar. I think this video is making things up.
Hope it starts happening just to prove you a fool
Nope, there was always politics in the way. The bridge DOES make sense economically and environmentally and there's no problem with the structure or the engineering
My grandmother's cousin died in the 1908 earthquake in Catona, Calabria. Grandma emigrated to the U.S. c. 1901.
R.I.P your grandma cousin
You also forgot to mention that both coasts are sliding away from each other and that’s a major issue
Fun fact: they recently removed the cap on the wages for those involved in this project. It's just a move to take government money and put them into the pockets of politicians. There's a committee that has gotten paid for this project for the last 10 years, and as you can see there's no bridge yet.
One that could be said about organized crime, if it is more profitable to go legit, they will do it. The Waste Management industry is a good example of that.
If you are Italian you know that the bridge is a legend, if you are Sicilian it is myth. And now the myth travels around the world.
Get Japanese engineers to design and build the bridge. Then it will be earthquake proof because Japanese are the best at that. But Don't get the Chinese.
this is not an economic project, or rather that is not the priority, what really matters is UNITING Sicily with Italy, in the collective imagination it means no longer seeing it as an island, but physically united, it means national, cultural and economic union , for Sicilians it means seeing themselves even closer to the nation and not abandoned by Rome. National unity, there is nothing more important
0:18 is Cefalù.Why did he put it?He is talking about Messina,so why did he put a Town that is way far away from Messina?
È perché lui è americano, quindi non conosce le città italiane apparte Roma, Napoli,Milano e Firenze, quindi avrà probabilmente scritto "Baglia di città siciliana".
Va bene, ero solo un po' confuso visto che io sono di Cefalù.
Making a underwater tunel for more cheaper price :D
This may not be the perfect time to even build a connecting bridge between Sicily and Mainland Italy BUUUT if the people and government is in favor of doing this bridge which will finally unite Sicily to mainland Italy by all means go for it. They just got to make sure they put into consideration the environmental issue of this project like your mentioning in this video building a bridge ontop of a fault line is a ballsy move though
Can you make a video about the Francis Scott key bridge collapse situation?
I took a look at it, but i'm not sure if we could make an entire video about that and if it would fit to our usual content
@@MegaBuildsYT Exactly, it wouldn't be a video on a mega-scale construction project.
Perhaps you could do a video on recent megaproject repairs after disaster/damage?@MegaBuildsYT
I hope so.
the only reason why Mr. Salvini has all this desire to create the bridge is that his party, the Northern League, and not just the League as it is now called, is mainly linked to the territories of Lombardy and Veneto, which are notoriously large steel producers, and he absolutely must bring money to those who voted for him in the north, he doesn't care absolutely anything about the bridge itself, it has been calculated that the Italian regions that would gain the most from the construction of the bridge are obviously Lombardy and Veneto for the supply of steel used for the construction of the bridge itself. As a Sicilian I hope it is never built or better than if it is built that it is under another minister other than that sellout Salvini. My 2 cents
no wine, no fishing
