Apple MagSafe - Which Charger is Fastest - Speed Test
MagSafe from Apple works with iPhone 12, 12 Pro and any other iPhone with wireless charging, but MagSafe doesn’t come with a charger. In this video I show you what charger to use with MagSafe and why and do a speed comparison using a meter to test actual power output. I compare the 20w Apple charger, 96w MacBook charger, Samsung chargers, Anker and Aukey chargers and show which charger gives you the full capability and fast charging when using MagSafe. #iPhone12 #iPhone #apple #magsafe

I would love to see that, as I’m not interested in the MagSafe charger either.
I have the 30w, from Belkin, and its faster.
I’d really like to see this too

I’ve been looking for someone to compare MagSafe charging with a 3rd party case and this is the only video I’ve found so far. I was also wondering about the Anker charger. This video was very informative, thank you for making it.
I think I like that meter as much as I like the iPhone 12.

This is the way this testing should’ve happened! Loved the detail and permutations/combinations explored.
Now this is the video I was waiting for someone to make. Thank you.
Great Video so cool to see it with the meter!! I've been working on my own and was about to scrap it when I saw the notification for this one but we're doing it a bit differently so I guess I'll keep working on it lol. Mine shows how long it takes from 0-100% since fast chargers taper down with time and heat. I'm comparing the 5W, 7.5 generic Qi Wireless, Magsafe with 20W brick and 18W since a lot of people have those already and finally 20W fast charging with a lightning cable.
can’t wait to see this one!!
Can you try it with the anker 20W nano? Seems to be very popular
Nice. Looking forward to it.

Very timely video. So many questions about the “new” charging format for Apple, not to mention one of the comprehensive videos on phone charging I’ve ever seen. Thanks.
Bought the meter awhile back, ordered the 13 Pro Max and as my 1st MagSafe phone I came here to get the results of hours of testing. The 20W will make it before all the other orders on pre-order day. Thank you!!!! 💯
Video came right on time. I hear there’s some controversy about the MagSafe charger not giving you the full wattage without an apple brick.
This is interesting and would love to see you do the same test for those of us that are still gonna use the lightning cable and plug it in as normal. Im still using my “24W Ravpower” plug and a lightning cable.
I am sold and convinced (based on your testing results) to get only the Apple 20watt charging adapter for it's PD profile. Thank you Aaron this was a real interesting treat of a video with valuable testing.
I appreciate this charger speed test. Helpful information. Blessings on your day.

Great charging analysis for the iphone 12 👍🏻
Thank you so much for bringing this aspect, really looking forward for you to test Magsafe with 3rd party 20W (9V2.22A) chargers
This is such an informative episode. I'm buying an iPhone 12 for my parents' 50th wedding anniversary. They are upgrading from an iPhone 6S!! The wattage, magsafe, etc are all new to me. It looks like I'll stick with the new Apple 20 watt charger with MagSafe for optimal charging. You really helped me decide. thank you!!
Glad that I purchased original 20w charger not cheaper ones. Really great video thanks!
Thank you for this. I think I’ll just use the 18w or 20w with the cable 😁
Interesting video! Thanks for the insights! Cool to see a more science based look at it, instead of random charging tests! What I'm wondering. What results do you get if you charge the iPhone straight from the MacBook charger with the cable? Does it cap at 20W or does it do the same 10W as it did on the wireless charger? Thanks and keep up the great content!
Great video, this is the one to watch when looking for a charger! Huge thanks to Aaron!
Very helpful and thorough video, im currently waiting for my 12 pro and browsing for accessories...more power and more videos. 👍
This is a great demo, I was debating to buy a 3rd party more powerful device but with this test, it is very clear that 20 Watt Charges made by Apple is the way to go, excellent feedback Aaron! Thank you.
Ditto, so close to buying a different charge but now I'm buying Apples 20W
I bet something from Anker could compete with the apple one no problem. I could have told you before watching this that the Samsung ones would perform poorly because Samsung has their own fast charge technology, as far as I know it only works with Samsung phones. But my Samsung phone also supports Qualcomm's Quick Charge 3. So my phone will charge fast off my Samsung chargers with Samsung's technology, or with my Anker charger with QC3. On the other hand, my Anker power bank that supports QC3 in & out charges slow with the Samsung charger and fast with the Anker QC3. Or my Aukey QC3 car charger. But you have to pay attention to what you're buying, because some of their power banks only have QC for either in or out but not both. Anyways I would put money on Anker's chargers designed for Apple products working almost as well as or perhaps even better than Apple's charger.
@@zeruty anker is a superb product. I especially love their headphones, I have the cheap soundcore neo and they are so comfortable and great.
You answered maybe 50 of the most questions people have about iPhone charging. Thank you so much for your dedication :) Do you think you'll ever do a comparison of direct charging from 5w, 18w, 20w, 30w, and 60w adaptors? The latter two because many people have MacBook Airs and Pros alongside their iPhone and we often charge with those adaptors. I would be keen to know the charging times with all those different chargers. Thanks!!
Hi Aaron really nice video with technical details. Your making everything simple. Great efforts
Great video, lots of doubt solved, and here I am continue using cable for charging!
Aaron hit a homerun with this one. His bet about the PD profile is a good explanation for sure. With the right tools , he tested a lot of stuff. Maybe Apple can manage better their others Apple charger with an iOS 14 update , who knows. My guess is that the new 20w charger has the latest and greatest PD profile and the MagSafe can negociate the full speed all the time. Awesome video as usual.
I’d like to see you do the same tests but directly wired rather than wireless; ie compare the speed of the 18w, 20w & 96w (also the 30w) Apple charges directly wired.....?
yes please 30w wired
Aziz - I have 5w, 10w, 18w, 29w & 30w Apple chargers; I wasn’t interested in buying a MagSafe but I’m now very confused which charger is best to use (wired) with my new iPhone 12 Pro or would I be best buying a 20w charger, again I wasn’t going to since I thought I had all bases covered but maybe I haven’t.....? 🤷🏼♂️

From Apple support: It's important to plug into a power source before placing your iPhone on the MagSafe Charger. This allows MagSafe to verify it's safe to deliver maximum power.

Cleared my doubt. Was just about to buy a another one . Having the 20w charger already with me . Thank you Aaron!! OG
Fantastic video Arron! Was waiting for someone do a nice video like this!
You probably need to retest this man. It seems Mag Safe use 9V/1.67A USB-PD rev 2.0/3.0 protocol and your test shows gradual decrease of Ampere as the phone’s battery fill up. 1st test 1.62A 2nd test 1.35A 3rd test 1.14A 4th test 1.07A 5th test 1.03A 6th test 1.02A 7th test 0.83A Better recheck this. 🤔
It really decreases in order! Good find. I hope you are right. I already have anker charger and don’t wanna buy another.
Can you explain what you mean and what's wrong with that? (Sorry, I'm really confused)
As you can see from the 1~7th test, its Ampere number is very constantly reducing despite the various charger brand. USB-PD protocol usually set the Voltage (9V in this case) and reduces Ampere as battery is filling up. In the video, test start with about 45% battery and continue charging while changes charger in-between. So naturally, as battery reaches 50%, iPhone’s PD charging controller could start to reduce Ampere. (To protect battery life cycle) To make sure, it is better to test each charger at the same battery state. (At least 20% would be preferred)
@@ATORO1 I also didn't notice any jump cuts between the charger tests, so heat was building up in the device and that also will cause the charging to throttle.
then how you explain at 12:12 he used the stock 20w and 3rd party case it still hit 15w? According to your theory it should have remained at 10w
I wanted to point out that the first charges were “negotiated” with lower temperatures so that might affected later chargers. It helps a lot having it in front of an A/C or a desk fan to dissipate heat.
Thanks a lot for making this video it really help a lot 👍🏻
This video is the most professional about iPhone on yt in my opinion .
What about the 18 vs 20 watt adapter for wired charging on the iPhone 12?
its equal. 20w is like 2% faster. don't worth it.

Can we assume the Meter is PD profile agnostic? _ where can we get the meter? Make/model? Tks
Yes, it should be and is just a pass through
@@zollotech Thanks, so are you saying Apple PD profile is proprietary? Surely a PD charger should be able to detect and match the device under charge? (Standards)..? Tks
Exactly i was thinking the same.. seems like they added a proprietary PD..
@@avgguy7129 yes if so i wish Apple didn’t do that. The whole point is to use standard chargers of choice and not being forced to buy Apple chargers (of which they are so “green” about now not including them - yeah right). I bought a RAV paper 60 watt charger which has USB & USB-C (PD) exactly for the purpose of extracting as much power as possible and charging 2 devices with different connectors (which Apple don’t do). Now I have to buy a meter to check if its actually working ! Don’t you just love tech :-)
Great job! This has been the best test of MagSafe and charging adapters. I wonder what adapter Apple will recommend with its MagSafe Duo wireless charger. I recently bought the Anker Power Port III 2-Port 60 Watt charger, thinking I could use it for the MagSafe and the Apple Watch wireless chargers, but I believe it will be useless, as it will probably not be able to get the full 15 Watt charging speed. Apple has definitely made some shady moves with its MagSafe chargers.
Great vid! Just purchased MagSafe to give it a go myself. Tested on AirPods Pro as well and got from 70% battery to 90% in 30 mins with MagSafe...not too bad! Keep the great content rollin!
Interesting finding! Thanks for the test.
To be fair I’m glad Apple slows charging so aggressively due to heat, because heat is like the best way to kill battery capacity fast
Heat lol stick the bastard on a wireless charge pad it gets way hotter than fast charger and you have it sitting there for 2 hours or 1 hour 30mins

This is what I’d love to see as well, comparing 20w, 18w, and 12w charging bricks.
Great job Thx for all the helpful information.
Thank you very much for an excellent video as always!!
Wow. GREAT video. I'm a little irked that the MagSafe charger seems to be specifically optimized for the 20 watt charger. Even though I have two 18 watt chargers (iPad Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max), I'll still need to shell out for a new adapter for the MagSafe charger. Not a good look from Apple. I'm disappointed that the MagSafe charger can't negotiate 15 watts from a more powerful adaptor than 20 watts, especially for non-MagSafe devices. Thanks again for being so thorough!
If I can play devils advocate, do you reaallly need to shell out $20 for just an extra 2W of charging speed? Are you really gonna notice the difference in day-to-day of 13W wireless vs 15W wireless? Or are you really gonna notice the difference of 18W wired vs 20W wired?
Are you using MagSafe or planning to get a MagSafe charger? Thanks for watching!
Think I’ll get the apple 20w brick and stay with the cord
My phone doesn’t supports wireless charging
I noticed the same thing. My 12 Pro was heating up and talking a while to charge with the MagSafe case installed. Seemed to do much better with a direct connection from the MagSafe charger as it could obviously breathe better with more desirable heat dissipation.
i copped the apple 20w brick and the magsafe charger, works great!
I tried charging with my MagSafe on my 12 pro... felt it was too slow and made my phone too hot. Planning on returning and just sticking with the cord!
Finally found a good video for chargers. Thanks
Thank you. I don’t know a lot about this subject and am the mercy of others. That would be fine if I actually understood what some of them were saying. You are an excellent teacher! I understood everything you said. I was thinking about an Anker charger since the commercials say they’re great. 🤨 I listened to a video before this one. At the end I decided the Anker was the way to go. Thank goodness I decided to listen to another review. I’ve changed my mind. 😊 Thank you. You have another subscriber!!!
take home message: use the usb c to lightning cable that came with your iPhone with any PD enabled charger. This magsafe charger is a useless inefficient earth polluting gimmick.
you guys are high. It depends on the use case desired. Sometimes I just want to slap my device down onto a mat or cradle and not plug it in. I don't care that it's less efficient to do that. Do you I nag you about running your AC too cool or heat too warm? Or fridge too cold? Or having children vs not? etc... We all choose how we spend our energy consumption.
@@matt-yc1yb Exactly! A lot of people just want a simple way to charge their phone, and even though I don't really consider MagSafe to be completely wireless, I still love using mine. Of course you're not gonna use it if you need to charge your phone quickly, then you would just use a cable. However most people just charge their phone overnight, and MagSafe is a great option, which I see getting better and improved as time goes on
I bought a MagSafe Duo. Returning it. It’s Horrible.
Honestly, I’m just going to plug my 12 in using the cable and adapter from my prior iPhone or my current iPad adapter. I don’t see what the big deal is with the MagSafe but I get that people will like it. Seems like the effort to place your phone on the MagSafe and adjust it for the best connection takes about as long (or longer) than it does to plug in a lightning cable. And besides, it would be easier to use the phone with the cable plugged in than maybe having to adjust the MagSafe from time to time. Thanks but no thanks.
The magnets means it automatically aligns, so with MagSafe you just place it on it and it will centre it’s self for correct position, easier than a cable, but using the iPhone while charging then might as well use a 20w charger rather than 15w MagSafe, only easier during the night say, can easily place it down in the dark and don’t need to look for the lighting port lol
so uh the iPhone 13 won't have a charging port
@@Valenslays not confirmed yet but most likely
magsafe is too impractical (is that even a word?) for me, I would rather just get a 18 watt adapter or a 20 watt adapter and use that tbh.

you can’t get one online but i copped one the other day at an apple store they had a ton. i had no wireless chargers at all as i used to have an iphone 7 before i got the 12, i also had an apple gift card so i didn’t have anything to lose by trying it. I’m actually really enjoying it! it’s kinda the best of both worlds as i can just place my phone down as it snaps right into place without me even having to look. i can also prop my phone up to watch a video while it still charges. and i saw a bunch of people saying it’s pointless because you can’t just pick your phone up, and i doubt most of those people have even used the charger because all I have to do is place a finger down on the cable as i lift my phone. it’s muscle memory and not inconvenient at all. this is hands down the best wireless charger for the iphone 12. it’s obviously a luxury, not a necessity, but it’s the best of both worlds between wireless and regular charging
