And though the germans and Irish may not have been incorporated in to the country of Rome proper germany was first United under the Holy Roman banner and the irish definitely enjoy the bounty of the west. This reminds me of a book A Clash of Eagles by Alan Smale in which the Romans stay united and are an empire into High Middle Ages (1200s). They discover Hesperia (North America) and are attempting to halt Genghis Khan from invading Europe. The expeditionary force set to Hesperia is defeated and scattered by the native city-state of Cahokia when they reach the Mississippi following a brutal march from the Chesapeake.
Really wish it became an HBO series.

...the films never seem to grasp that the Romans fought as a single unit with segments. Key to their success had always been 8 men fighting as 1, 80 men fighting as 1, 480 men fighting as 1 -then it gets more complicated. But when their shield cohesion was broken, they all knew they'd loose so staying as a unit was always their aim. In the films you see them fighting individual combats, but, if they were to win they'd never do that.
