I went from iPhone to dumb phone to no phone (and learnt this)

A couple of months ago my iPhone broke, and I couldn't afford to replace it. Instead of buying a cheap android, I bought a basic little Nokia, and what happened since I could never have expected.
I was just like everyone else, taking my smartphone around with me, everywhere I went. Like it was attached to my body. I would also fill every spare minute scrolling or watching something. But never in a million years did I think I would be where I am now. Not USING A PHONE AT ALL!
After realizing there is more to life than just settling with what you’ve got and what is expected of you, I’m determined to help others in their 20s realize their own true potential and live a more passion-fuelled life by taking back control.
I’m going, to be honest with you I’m 27 years old, and achievement wise I don’t really have anything to show for myself, I entered the real world after college with no skills and no idea. I quickly discovered after bouncing from 1 minimum wage job to another that something is wrong.
Is this really what my life is going to be like?
But after seeing my wife quit Uni to pursue KZhead and start her own business, I saw that life wasn’t just about settling with what you’ve got but it's actually possible to create your own path.
After seeing what is possible of someone close to me, I’m determined to experience, learn and share to help others in their 20s realize their own true potential, take control and live a life to be proud of.

  • Born in 88, as a millennial I've gone full circle. Remember when feature phones like Nokia 3310 were amazing and cutting edge. Then Smartphones came out. We had no idea how much they were gonna change the world. We all obsessed in the "theres an app for that" days of the early 2010s. Now im utterly sick to death of it and am going back to a feature phone. Social media and smartphones are screwing us up big time. We need that boredom that comes from waiting in line for a couple of minutes or sitting in traffic. Far too much of these little dopamine hits are rewiring our brains. Im 35 now and trying to train my brain to be like it used to be after years of smartphone abuse. Im pleased to see a lot of Gen Z starting to fight back against all this digital addiction.

    • Hi Anthony, yeah I was born in 1995 so I was in school when I saw the iphone come out and by the end of high school so many had iphones or atleast an ipod touch. I would hate to be a teenager in school now with social media and judgement of others, be what it is nowadays. It is nice seeing a small miniority of people fight back. It's definitely a start and most people seem to be better off saying no to these things.

    • At least we can make changes like these to take back control and look after ourselves. My concern is the increase of things being mandatory that relieves us of control and has us under more surveillance. P.s. also you were a younger man before mobile phones and the internet probably a more free time with less responsibilities. I’m sure it was a better time 😂👍🏻

    • I am a smartphone user but I dont take out my phone every time I need to wait 10-20 Minutes. Sounds like this is a personal habbit problem you created by starting to take your phone out everytime you need to wait a few minutes, not a problem the phone itself makes you to create. You can have those times of boredom while owning a smartphone. Just get used to not take it out everytime you have nothing to do. At first you may need self control, but once you get used to it, you will naturally not take your phone out every time.

  • I have a flip phone which doesn't have any wifi capabilities, just text and calls, and I've been living with it my whole life. Everything's working around smartphones, especially when you're living in a city. But I'm still alive and living fine. I never checked the weather. People think there's something wrong with me. They think my decision to not have a smartphone is pointless. But I know that I'm better off not having a distraction machine rather than spending hours scrolling tiktok and instagrams every day. I'm very confident & pround with my decision and I'm planning to keep it that way.

All it takes is a little bit of pre-planning to determine how to get to a location or.... heaven forbid, reading a map. I still tell people, meet me at address x\y @ a specific time if I must connect with a person. One day I may own a regular mobile phone for emergency situations, but so far, I've gotten this far in my life (60 yrs old) without a cell phone, why change it.

I think the internet is a powerful and useful tool but we are not taking it’s addictive side as seriously as we should. We probably would when we begin to see the long term consequences of over stimulation from the internet. Imo the internet is good but needs an off switch, like everything else. The smartphone eliminates the off switch.

  • There is something you didn't cover tho: How annoying it is for the people around you that you have a phone with very limited capability. I used a basic Nokia for a few months and I found myself kind of getting fazed out of my friendship groups - not on purpose, but we all rely on everyone to be independently capable of checking in on plans made in Messenger, and so I would literally be unaware of plans that were being made off the cuff, and causing annoyance to almost everyone around me for not being able to be as independent (the reality of a dumb phone is no maps, no bank app on the go, no music, no Lime or Uber) and instead relying on others more. I do wonder how irritating your wife ACTUALLY found it that she had to be responsible for your lack of phone - not to mention you leaving home without it considering your children. Anyway, definitely an angle I was interested in seeing here (or in any dumb phone video) that I haven't seen covered yet. I kind of feel like you need to all make the switch in your friendgroup to dumb phones, or have no friends that are trying to maintain friendship.

    • I’ve been using an XP5s since February! It’s a chunky thing but even as a heavy texter the battery still lasts 3 days. I love that all the basics work right since it’s based on AOSP. Group chats, sending photos/videos, calls, setting alarms, host spot, etc. all work correctly. The internet browser is even workable in a pinch. Called for a tow once and they required I put my info in via a link. Did not work well on the KaiOS phone I had at the time. I use an older LG V35 to play Spotify in the car, Garmin GPS for navigation, Canon PowerShot (or an SLR/DSLR of choice for photos), and I keep my socials on an older tablet at home. It’s a situation that works well for me (distractions with ADHD are hard) but I do miss having them all in one place sometimes.

  • I think switching to dumb phones is for people who lost/lack self control, so making the smartphone unaccessible to them is the last resort for them to get rid of their bad habbits. Giving responsibility over their own bad habbits/lack of self control away and saying that its all the smartphones fault is just not the right approach and objectively not true.

    • I made a video recently about self discipline because I see a lot of people share that belief of taking something away as a bad thing. In Homer’s odyssey, Odysseus asked his men to strap him to the mast of his ship because he knew the sirens call was too strong. The lesson here is even the strongest of wills still have to battle with self control, urges, desires and distractions. Putting a smartphone away and using a dumb phone is a sign of weakness it’s an understanding of how self discipline actually works. It’s healthy.
