The Pilgrim - Walking Into The Forest
The Pilgrim is the latest solo project of Gabriele Fiori, frontman of Rome-based outfits Black Rainbows and Killer Boogie. The end result on Walking into the Forest is a space-folk release with a personality unto itself. Songs like opener “Peace of Mind” evoke some of Fiori’s more rocking side, while “Sunset in the Desert” feels like an ode to the acoustic album Kyuss never made, and side B, which starts with the Hawkwind cover “Brainstorm” and ends with the moody strum of “Suite #2” -- originally from Void Generator’s 2004 debut EP; when Fiori was in the band -- hones a cosmic drift and textures that nonetheless remain accessible and organic thanks to their acoustic foundation.
“The main point in common with Black Rainbows is the diversity of the songs,” Fiori explains. “You have mind-dreams like ‘Dragonfly’ or ‘Sailor,’ or the more folk rock ‘Peace of Mind,’ passing through space with ‘The Time You Wait’ and the melodic-melancholic ‘When I Call Your Name.’” In completing the arrangements, Fiori turned to Black Rainbows drummer Filippo Ragazzoni, and as he says, “Songs came out so spontaneously and easy. I always played acoustic guitar and wanted to push further on this path. The songwriting, rehearsing and recording approach was so different from usual Rainbows or Boogie style, both to me and Filippo for drums, because all the instruments needed to be played smoothly, softly.”
The fantastic and dreamy artwork has been accomplished by Marteen Donders The recordings has been realized in Rome at Nero Studio on a fantastic 70's SSL mixing console during the fall 2018 The Mix and the mastering been doon at JD Studio by Pino Santamaria, same engineer who mixed several Black Rainbows albums. With Walking into the Forest, Fiori evokes a sound that is both classic and fresh, melodically rich and creatively constructed. It is a new outlet for Fiori that demands spiritual as well as auditory engagement, and an all-things-permissible sonic context that one can only hope The Pilgrim continues to explore.

  • i have spent a straight fucking year trying to find this album. I did not remember this album name, no band name, just the image of some old dude walking through the woods with a lantern. I have asked on reddit, different discords, I’ve fucking recreated trying the drawing what i remembered of the image in drawing format, and through *pure chance* I found this thing again. I’m home, and god does it feel righteous.

(Living in a commune that is) I was raised by a bunch of beautiful, Loving, intelligent, pot smoking hippies and they're still raising me today ❤. Never left my side, never left me at home with a sitter bc I was welcome amongst all of them all of the time😊. Seen Peter Paul and Mary main floor when I was 5-6 yrs old. There were 3 open seats next to me and I got to meet each of them bc they were reserved for Peter Paul and Mary to sneak down to sit in while they did their solo performances.

  • Just smoked a joint and started listening. This is making me feel a certain ascension where I feel. Like your first mosh pit, your first falling in love/first kiss, the feeling of seeing your childhood house/room. Seeing family that sticked with you till the very end after not seeing them since the dawn of time, your first feeling of spring finally came, the feeling of getting your first job on your first day/your first pay check from your job, tasting something you loved but haven’t eaten it in years, the feeling of getting over a loss, the feeling of the come downs of your mental episodes, the first feeling of going to a concert of a band you love and finally feel you’re not the only one who knows their music. Feeling the morning crisp air in a gentle wind as you smell wet grass, the feeling of the light on a full moon while going for a walk/ a walk from something amazing you went/did not too long ago, the feeling of being in high school and seeing your best friends and chatting till it’s sunset, the first feeling of getting a gift from someone you love, your first screaming vent about your anger, that feeling of drinking a cold refreshing drink on a hot day, or having nice warm soup/stew/curry on a really cold day, seeing the stars on a clear night, your first camping trip, that taste of hot cocoa with marshmallows, your first memory of diving into the internet, your first theme song you’d blast every hour, your first transfer between phases of your life, that feeling of treating yourself even if you could barley afford it, seeing squirrels and pigeons in a city park, the first feeling of being by the water, your first feeling of sinking your toes in the sand, discovering a show you’d follow like a cult, the first feeling of a parent bandaging your first injury, the first feeling of riding your bike/driving your new car, tasting your first dish of a cuisine that will makes its country your favourite food, the feeling of nailing that one meal/dessert that you always nail at, the feeling of seeing wildlife for the first time, your first mosquito bite, finding an old shirt you loved to wear, your first poster/picture you hanged on your wall, the feeling of looking back on everything. Everything. Makes me develop more thoughts on my philosophy, from some re-wording from one of the goats sport shows: Ted Lasso; “life is truly beautiful, but first it will piss you off”

    • You mean back when music had some actual thought and emotion behind it? There are definitely great bands nowadays making thought proviking, intelligent music, but unlike back in the 60s and 70s it's not the top charts stuff and you have to go out and find it. Case in point look at the Beatles. Arguably the most commercially successful band back then and they had some very interesting, crazy and intelligent chord progressions, note selection, lyrics, instrument choices, etc. Today they'd be some "indie" band at your local pub. Back then they were closing down airports with fans upon arrival. Evolutuon? Or Mike Judge's movie "idiocracy?" Haha. Oh well. There is most definitely a shift happening though. Peace.

    • Was in a hotel room in SF after my campervan was stolen and was so bummed. Luckily, it was the pandemic, yes, LUCKILY because the city offered me a free hotel room in Union Square here in SF under Project Room Key. SF used millions of State of Emergency funds from the fed to screen people vulnerable to get really sick if they got covid so because I have COPD from breathing dry chemicals at an oil rig job that didn't offer respirators only dust masks and 17 yrs later I'm diagnosed w COPD and that qualified me for the program along w many others and when I started missing taking my pointer Scrappy (who had to be put to sleep after his hips finally couldn't take anymore even with his walker on wheels harness thing) to run the sand dunes at the beach then chillin in the van w the ocean and the beautiful forest like setting on the west end of Golden Gate Park was on the verge of tears even though a younger black n white GSP that the rescue I volunteered at gave me made a great companion for him in his last days and a huge security blanket for me then, since and now. At that moment, thinking about that lush forest setting the dogs and I used to spend so much time and the walls to the hotel were feeling like a prison and that van life felt so distant this album just appears as I was scrolling searching for Red Sparrowes and wouldn't you know it, it read Walking into the Forest. Listened to it all the way about 4 times, it was like therapy and the art is just well no words a future version of me w the long hair gray instead of dark with the Ravens and Crows that I used to feed at the Park along w Raven the little savior dog. It found me at the most absolute right time.

I did searches on Wikipedia for "Gabriele Fiori," "Black Rainbows" 🌈, "Killer Boogie," "The Pilgrim," and "Walking Into The Forest." ... Do you know what my search result was? It was NOTHING. As. If.
