  • I'm sure removing the weapon systems on the P51 also effect the speed heavily. The P51 originally had 6 m2 50 caliber browning machineguns. Each one weighing atleast 100 pounds with their mounts, probably more. I can only imagine how the loss of 300 to 400 pounds of weight per wing would effect the harmonics of the airfoil.

    @theduke7539@theduke75392 жыл бұрын
    • It's probably not that much of an issue. There have been lots of privately owned P-51's that fly just fine without guns. And if it were, it would be easy enough to add weight to the wings.

  • They are always hitting us with that, *"statistically speaking flying is one of the safest forms of transportation and percentage wise has far less fatalities in comparison to automobiles."* What they don't tell us is, there are far more cars on the road than planes in the sky. The numbers are the reason automobile accidents happen more frequently, even with that said a single car accident may only result at a minimum of 1 person injured or a casualty. Whereas airliners have the potential to take out hundreds of passengers in one single event. If the number of passengers and planes in active service equated to the same number of drivers and cars on the road we'd have an epidemic of death on a massive scale. If you think about it, this show is like in its 15th season with an average of 10 episodes a season and does not appear to be slowing down due to a lack of material. If you ask me, the shows longevity and success points out a freighting reality and I still can't seem to get enough. 😀

A big omission, I feel, with the Reno Air Races crash in 2011, is that you talk about the "disaster" but don't tell us how many deaths and serious injuries were caused, as follows: pilot James K. "Jimmy" Leeward, and ten people on the ground were killed and 69 more on the ground injured.

    @robcodsall@robcodsall Жыл бұрын
    • Yeah they do that on purpose. That way you'll be curious enough to purchase an episode. Smithsonian don't play around with those copy right strikes so you won't find many air disasters on KZhead. Alas there is a channel who has uploaded every episode of may day disasters and you can watch them for free. In the actual 60 minute episode they did go into detail about that so I assumed they just omitted it for time versus not addressing it in the compilation. Hard trying to summarize a hour episodes in 5 minutes.

  • To describe the aircraft that crashed as a P-51 Mustang was inaccurate, the modifications probably had less than 10% of original build aircraft left, to try and push its top speed to 500 mph would not be very good for the 70 years old components, they probably would have gone way way beyond their original expected lifespan, whilst the warbirds look spectacular and sound even better I don’t think I would ever want to fly one, you just can’t ask a vintage aircraft to be as strong as it was when new.

  • All planes should have small markings in their structure, like a jig saw puzzle, that show where the part fit! Then when there is a crash it would be possible to get most of the plane put back together. At least a lot easier if possible. It can be done with any metal marker that simply rolls around the plane leaving minute numbers.

  • For the first incident of the video, ik for any air craft you need power to land in case the plane stalls and slams too hard onto the ground. But couldn’t they shut off the over powered engine and use engine two as their main, despite the recent malfunction? Realistically speaking it’s not the worst idea but it’s better than landing with an engine at 74% thrust.

    @dirtfloorgarage8489@dirtfloorgarage84893 жыл бұрын
    • They couldn't. The cause of the engine troubles was a fuel contaminant: a desiccant (something to absorb water, like in those sachets of beads that are in everything these days) got into the fuel supply and then jammed up the fuel flow control valve so it couldn't move. Once those are jammed up, you have zero control over the throttle. So while Engine 1 was stuck at full thrust, Engine 2 was stuck at idle because the pilot reduced thrust before the fuel valve got completely jammed.

  • I love the Smithsonian institution and all.. and if I was sitting here and fully paying attention to the episode,I imagine it'd be great!. But as I am use to full episodes on one crash, and try to do things around the 🏠,I come back and what what happened to the first plane ,or three other ones that I was waiting for them to do a full investigation,and then do an explanation for us . So I'm thinking they are gonna circle around to the modified race plane...then they just keep coming up with new crashes...wow! Now I need to rewatch this when I have nothing else to do...if I want to know ,that is.🙄🙂👍 Guess what I can fully pay attention and still get other stuff done... And so there isn't supposed be this gel in the fuel,and they don't know how it got out of the transfer pumps filter. Stop...alright that's what I figured,so now let's move on to the modified race fighter ...and of course it was modified..., In a hanger they go to see why some other plane crashed... Oh wait it's not me ,I'm not the one suffering from ADHD !it's this show. And again they leave one for another...I guess this episode is just the previews for the full episodes?! So after rewatching the whole thing and rewinding where they seem to just jump ahead to another crash...it's not me,it's the show,it doesn't actually solve any of these, maybe just the one where the pilots weren't trained properly to land in that tight space. Or was it the other one.?.. don't know . Scratching my head, it's just that I'm used to having the accident not only solved ,but for them to fix what went wrong,for it never to happen again.

    • mm unfortunate for them(company) to not be held liable and resulting in bankruptcy. blame it on the pilot, meanwhile plane mechanic engineers who also don't spot it, are clear of blame

      @GBgrenade@GBgrenade2 жыл бұрын
    • Well that's not entirely wrong. If that rusty bolt was something on the preflight check and the manufacturer and airlines made it clear that if that bolt is rusty then they need to not take off. It's only the airline or manufacturer's fault if that bolt has a known failure rate and is supposed to be replaced regularly and the airline chooses to ignore replacing it regardless of the flight crew inspections.
