This stuff reminds me of the “you suck at photoshop” tutorials I watched so many years ago. They were so perfect for what I wanted to learn from PS, with a huge dose of comedy and story built in. It’s kinda fitting that I’m using very similar tutorials to learn Blender for my own interest. I much prefer it to the 10 minute videos that you skip through to learn to do ONE thing.

"if you keep things messy enough you don't need to put up a lot of tracking markers because they're just built in" Pure excellence
@tajaloe59204 жыл бұрын
Reminds me of, I think it was that Hugh Jackman Van Helsing movie. The vfx guys were hesitant to have real grass in the shots because they feared that it'd screw up the camera tracking. At the end of the shoot they joked about how they wanted grass in all shots because ot turned out that the grass had so much detail that was still enough so that those ironically became the easiest shots to track of them all.

The way this video was directed (edited live to tape) is a classic example of over-using your multiple camera angles. So often, they're only showing the medium shot of Ian Hubert even though there's something super cool happening on the screen. As a result, we don't get to see it. The ideal shot is the split-screen where we see Ian on the right side, and the feed from his screen on the left. If the director had just put that shot up and done literally nothing else, this video would be better. Just because you have a lot of camera angles, just because you can do live switching, doesn't mean you should. The director seemed to feel the need to justify their own existence by constantly calling for unnecessary cuts. Learn from their mistakes.

This guy made Blender into stand up art comedy mixed with professionalism. His mindset is what's driving many people into wanting to learn the software, myself included. Thanks Ian Hubert
And to think he's the director of Tears of Steel!!
You should also watch Captain Disillusion's talk from last year if you haven't already, it's so good
Ian Hubert is a 3D magician and not an artist. Extremely important person for the blender community
His humor kept me through the whole video... not realising half an hour already passed
Ian hubert: A man who doesn’t make textures for objects, but rather objects for textures.
what
He doesn't need to download any textures just capture any of his house object! Love Ian Hubert!
hahah... exactly his own idea but very powerful
1st time reading this makes no sense then you read it 10 times and then understand that the world is a lie and the earth is flat and Ian just extrudes the faces to make mount everest

"if you keep things messy enough you don't need to put up a lot of tracking markers because they're just built in" Pure excellence
@@jmalmsten One of those not being taught what the tools are capable of and just relying on rote procedures you read from the book.
@@jmalmsten I VFX Supervised a TV spot and put little green tracking marks in the grass... once. Once they got the track, the first they did was use it to paint out the totally superfluous tracking marks. I learned my lesson.

at one point they thought about that. They should show insets all the time
I did wonder if that was a copy right or advertising thing. Happened a few times when he was talking about other peoples assets. NASA models and an open source steel tower? Not every time. Anyway, I agree with you.
Agreed, felt like half the time he commented about something the swap to the screen was just after he had swapped to another image. Kinda don't need the closeups of him or filler shots of the audience when he's literally speaking about the image that we can't see.
