The reason he gained power was so that he could open the Dragon's Gate to find Nils and Ninian. When he finally did, it corrupted him. It's pretty heartbreaking.

His original goal was to bring back his wife and reunite with his kids and be a family again. But the power to actually do so took away his mind and his memories, and it's unclear if he regains them in his last moments or if the power corrupted him completely.

Y'know, Nergal is a lot deeper of a villain in the series than many would paint at a first glance. Sure, being the father of Ninian and Niles is already pretty deep, but his journey to unlock the gate is pretty tragic. First of all is his study of dark magic. Elibe has shown us that it's dark magic is cursed and those not prepared enough can succumb to it. Not only does Canas tell us about it, but Bramimond is a exemplary representation of what a mastery of dark magic can do to you. Considering that he has practiced magic on the levels of Athos, Nergal must hold a great amount of power. Yet that same power is already eating away at him. Take into account that the number of quintessence needed to open the gate is immense, it's very clear to me what might have happened to Nergal. The original version of Nergal, the father of Ninian and Niles is gone. Succumbed to the dark magic he wields and only his desire of opening the gate remained with him. His purpose, and well as his humanity was taken by the darkness. Kind of gives new context to the title "Everything into Dark." Everything Nergal was is gone to the very darkness he used.

Thing that sucks with Nergal is a lot of his story is gated behind both a second play through and convoluted requirements. While I don't think he is a an extremely deep villain, even with the full story, the full story does make him more understandable than "Evil Dark Sorcerer wants more power to be more evil." and I think he would have had a solid enough backstory if you got the whole thing in one playthrough.

Finn That's definitely a plot hole but it can probably be justified by the fact that Grima's sadistic and just wanted Robin to murder his family and friends. Also if his plan succeeded, Chrom would have alnost certainly been killed, leaving Lucina as the only one left with any real chance of taking out Grima. ...Why he didn't do it as soon as he arrived at the past is a completely different hole though.

This shows just how far Nergal has fallen into madness. The Prince's Despair : Epic yet melancholic. You are fighting the (second) final boss, but you're also fighting the man who was once your best friend.

Campaign of Fire : Powerful and solumn. The absolute immense creature of an other time presents itself to you. The background is fire and flames. You are literally facing a giant embodiement of destruction that is ready to annihilate everything with its breath from hell. The part took from Jahn's theme shows that this is a creature not only powerful, but that did also survive The Scouring. And that you'll have to bring EVERYONE to take it DOWN.

Athos doubles Nergal with the Aureola Tome and kills Nergal faster than Nergal can kill him with the Ereshkigal. But he didn't, because he had Forblaze and Forblaze is kind of crap in FE7. Moral of the story, kids: Weapon Triangle is important, even at endgame.

This may fall on deaf ears but is a prime example of what can happen to anyone of us in a position of power if we let it corrupt us. May Or may not be magic but the fact remains that power can corrupt.
Thing that sucks with Nergal is a lot of his story is gated behind both a second play through and convoluted requirements. While I don't think he is a an extremely deep villain, even with the full story, the full story does make him more understandable than "Evil Dark Sorcerer wants more power to be more evil." and I think he would have had a solid enough backstory if you got the whole thing in one playthrough.

Finn That's definitely a plot hole but it can probably be justified by the fact that Grima's sadistic and just wanted Robin to murder his family and friends. Also if his plan succeeded, Chrom would have alnost certainly been killed, leaving Lucina as the only one left with any real chance of taking out Grima. ...Why he didn't do it as soon as he arrived at the past is a completely different hole though.

I really like how hard they made it to discover Nergal's backstory. It really rewarded you and added a large layer of depth to an already interestinv villian.

Killed Nergal with Raven after hitting him twice with Nino, once with Hector, and once with Eliwood. Raven was quite good my first playthrough. He maxed out strength and speed.
