Plot:
The film is set in the medieval Jewish ghetto of Prague and revolves around Rabbi Loew, the leader of the Jewish community. He predicts a disaster for his people and informs the elders. The Holy Roman Emperor orders the Jews to leave the city, but Loew devises a plan to defend them.
Florian, a squire, arrives in the ghetto and is attracted to Miriam, Loew's daughter. Loew convinces Florian to remind the Emperor of his predictions and asks for an audience. Meanwhile, Loew secretly creates a clay giant called the Golem to protect his people.
Florian returns with an invitation for Loew to attend the Rose Festival at the palace. While Loew reveals his creation to his assistant, Florian flirts with Miriam. Loew and his assistant perform a ritual to bring the Golem to life using a magic word written on paper and placed in an amulet on its chest. The Golem initially serves as a household servant.
Loew brings the Golem to the palace, impressing the audience, while Florian sneaks away to meet Miriam. During a projection of Jewish history, the court laughs, causing the palace to collapse. The Golem saves the court, and in gratitude, the Emperor pardons the Jews.
Back in the ghetto, Loew realizes the Golem's erratic behavior and discovers that it will be possessed by Astaroth and turn against its creators. The assistant informs Miriam about Florian, leading to the Golem killing him. The Golem sets the house on fire, and Miriam falls unconscious.
The assistant warns the praying Jews about the disaster, but upon reaching Loew's house, they find it burning and the Golem and Miriam missing. The desperate community asks Loew to save them from the rampaging Golem. Loew removes Astaroth from the Golem, which becomes docile.
The Golem breaks the ghetto gate and encounters a group of girls. One girl removes the amulet, causing the Golem to collapse. Miriam awakens, and they are joined by the assistant. The Jews discover the dead Golem and carry it back into the ghetto, concluding the film.
