This video is part of a series about climate change supported by Breakthrough Energy - a coalition founded by Bill Gates, that is working to expand clean-energy investment and support the innovations that will lead the world to net-zero carbon emissions.
www.gatesnotes.com/Climate-an...
Climate Change is just too much. There is never any good news. Only graphs that get more and more red and angry. Almost every year breaks some horrible record, from the harshest heat waves to the most rapid Glacier melt. It’s endless and relentless.
We have known for decades that rapid Climate Change is being caused by the release of Greenhouse Gases. But instead of reducing them, in 2019 the world was emitting 50% more CO2 than in the year 2000. And emissions are still rising. Why is that? Why is it so hard to just stop emitting these gases?

    • Ok so I'm going to guess that they're a few oil companies in that top 100. You can't run a modern economy without oil, including the feeding the population part. Without oil you have one modern agriculture and the vast majority of people starves. Is that a viable solution? Saying things like "but the top 100 companies" is counter productive because it's too big, ill-defined and you can't disentangle the parts we could make positive change from the parts we need to live.

The shit still rising up and the effects the constant pumping of co2 have started to show, (which in effect, it also gave some motivation to some companies, not great but better late than ever i guess.) but yes, as morbid as it sound, the pandemic gave us just a bit of time. . Two new variants called "lambda" and the stupid but cleverly named "Delta plus" just showed up in the world, which that it still could help us in some way despite still being a tragedy.. But that doesn't mean that we need to depend on these virus to take the people out, we still need to act out before the population starts rising up again (which, yeah it will rise up sooner or later.) and pressure the companies to act faster..

  • As a biomedical researcher I have recently read about research which tries to combat plastic waste pollution through directed evolution. Directed evolution is a process where proteins are changed in the laboratory over and over again to become much more efficient to do certain things. In this case, scientists are trying to make PET-digesting enzymes more effective in digesting plastic waste and they are actually quite successful (I'm planning a video about that if you are interested). Although this is only a tiny part of the overall solution, I think that innovative research might save us from the current climate change crisis!

    @Sciencerely@Sciencerely3 жыл бұрын
    • Yeah i read that too. This might be more of a curse than a blessing however. Plastics are used extremely commonly exactly because it does not get degraded by bacteria. If this would not be the case plastic might become far less useful, imagine your computer or telephone falling apart and those are just small things. It might not be smart playing god with evolution.

    • Bees and butterflies are in a lot of trouble. If you dig up some lawn in a sunny area and replace with flowers that would help them a lot. I recommend butterfly bush, butterfly weed, swamp milkweed, coneflower, black eyed Susan, zinnias, yarrow, sedum, spirea, fennel, dill, and parsley. A year ago, I put in a 50 gallon preformed pond ($50 at Menards) and put in a few pond plants (water lily, water iris, and water lettuce). It has attracted birds, frogs, lizards, and dragonflies. No pump or filter is needed. I do have to bail out mosquitoes larva, but that is quick and easy. If you buy seeds for birdhouse gourds you can grow and make your own birdhouses. Just punch a hole for the birds to get in and shake out the seeds, punch some small drainage holes at the bottom, and punch holes at the top to run wire or string through to hang. If you have a chain link fence in a sunny area, I recommend growing trailing blackberries. You can buy one plant and the root system will spread and you will have several more plants in two years. The bees love the flowers.

So we need to find new ways of enjoying live without consuming new things all the time. 2) There are real people suffering from climate change. It's not a concept but a real problem, leaving small farmers families hungry because they can harvest less food and so on. As long as we see the climate change as a theoretical problem and not something that actually causes harm to people that are worth as much as we are there won't be a lot of changes made. That's at least what I believe :)

It was expected to tripple the villages budget due to taxes. But as soon as these plans were revealed a group of people brought the whole village to fight against it. Now we still have a huge strip of land directly at the highway that nobody will ever use or look at, the small school will be closed and the 40 year old fire engine won't be replaced any time soon.

Both the manufacture of the new products and the transportation of the older products are carbon-intensive. A huge carbon expense that needs to be addressed is that of product processing. If I went to the store and bought canned fruit, they often say that they're grown in a South American country, but packaged in an East Asian country (usually China). Let's say they're from Venezuela - they go over 25000 miles, and over 3 months on the ship. It'd be FAR more efficient in terms of fuel and carbon to pack them in a nearby area.

As far as electric cars, you don’t have to pay for gas or anything like that. Govts. have to incentivize vehicles by say, trading in your vehicle for scrap for a buyout of its net worth so you could be incentivized to trade it in for an electric car. It’s also a sociological problem, but people don’t like nuclear power just because of things like Chernobyl, 3 mile island and Fukushima. More stable nuclear power is available in the form of isotopes like thorium, and the move away from uranium and plutonium is possible. It’s all cheaper than the alternative with fossil fuels, just not incentivized.

That's just some BS Donald comes out with to justify whatever treaty he's pulled out of. Not to mention, climate change is not just an issue of environmental damage. It's an economic issue which will cost the world trillions of dollars if we let it get out of hand. Kind of like covid, the more it gets out of hand, the most it was cost to get it under control. The best thing (from both a financial and human perspective) is to go hard on dealing with it now before it gets out of control. • As individuals, we could do some simple sacrifices to contribute to a lower green house gases emission such as reducing our meat diet, specially caw meat because of the amount of energy it requieres to keep those animals and trasport their resources, avoiding having pets, not having kids and avoiding buying unecessary things by impulse. Of course some of those alternatives are just too taugh for some people, but we could be getting used to them gradually, I guess.

    • Nuclear power plants are the better solution as long as no one explodes. And even if you are lucky and no one explodes you have the toxic waste for million years. Thats incredible. So we have to accept that both technologies are just not sustainable and both have such big disadvantages that they should be abolished.

      @nici5719@nici57193 жыл бұрын
    • @@smarty1312 nuclear waste is minuscule compared to the waste generated by all other means of energy production INCLUDING solar and wind which generate a ton of dangerous waste during their manufacturing process. Plus the nuclear waste can be reused. Of-course with diminishing returns but with more funds put into nuclear energy means more research which means more and more of the fuel gets used meaning the nuclear waste becomes less harmful every time. I mean theoretically you could reduce nuclear waste to hydrogen by splitting an atom to the smallest possible thing but of-course every time it gets smaller the more energy it takes to split it and the less energy to get out of it but still.

Carbon taxes, Cap and trade schemes, Renewable portfolio standards, subsidies, banning combustion engine vehicles, etc. A deep dive on the trade offs with these types of approaches would be interesting
