Catching and EATING Sand Fleas. Is It Worth it??

2017 ж. 29 Қаз.

Slow fishing down in Delaware, Figured this was the perfect time to try eating sand fleas.. I've heard mixed reviews as to how these things taste and was curious so cooked some up for breakfast and found they are pretty bad.. maybe not so bad.., overall not worth it. Tan threw some on a slice of Pizza which he said was good.. this whole thing is very questionable.

  • Good recipe for those. Soak them in lemon and let them dry on a cardboard. Throw away sand fleas and eat cardboard

  • Those are mole crabs aka sand crabs, not sand fleas. The mole crabs you are catching don't bite and they live in the water. Sand fleas do bite, they jump (like a flea), and they live in the sand. Sand fleas are also a lot smaller than mole crabs, they are pretty small.

    • yeah, they had me very confused because they were so big and lived in the water

    • Just looked them up n they r the same thing (mole crab, sand crab or sand flea) with the Puerto ones been somewhat smaller. Either one is not summet I'd fancy eating!

    • catherine english I'm a marine biologist. They are not the same animal though both are crustaceans. The name "sand flea" is often misused though to describe mole crabs.

      @MLATX512@MLATX5125 жыл бұрын
    • That being said, that's the problem with common names. They can be the same name attributed to several different animals and the more I've looked into it, the more animals I find that are called Sand Fleas. So, yes, I acknowledge that sometimes mole crabs are called sand fleas even though that name much more accurately describes Orchestia agilis. There are also actual fleas, called Chigoe fleas, that can live on the beach and are regularly called Sand Fleas. They have painful itchy bites and they sometimes burrow into the skin to lay eggs parasitically. The creatures in this video aren't a kind of flea at all though. They belong to the genus Emerita and are a type of crab. All of this really points to why scientific names are important rather than the common name being "wrong" I guess. But just to be clear, Emerita (in this video) don't bite.

I do think this would be a good add to a dish. Give some texture of done right and still healthy if prepared right.

    • I'm not from USA but where I am if you use local bait especially if it's live then chances are you'll have a chance at majority of the local fish in that area. Obviously depends what's in that area and what's specifically swimming near your bait that day etc. And obviously there's those few fish who seem to be picky and will only take certain baits. Like here in australia squid as bait doesn't work as well as the other store bought baits Idk why but they just don't seem to like it, I always just use live prawns.

The name "sand fleas" sounds more suitable for them though because of the way that they look and because they pretty much are the fleas of the beach. I've alwayse thought about cooking and eating them. I alwayse wondered how they would taste.
