Not only the Rajapaksha Family but a Lot of Politician and government officials are also corrupted People are so disappointed with this political structure, They are asking for a constitutional restructure. Lots of protests are going on all over the country, But all of them are so peaceful. But still, we rise as a nation! ❤🙌

  • I actually went to sri lanka this summer to visit a lot of family, and i got to experience the struggles first hand. There were several power outages a day that lasted hours, it was nearly impossible to find rides, and there were lines of vehicles/people that remained on the streets for days awaiting gas. however, the worst thing is the affect all of this has on the children of the country. specifically in education, with schools being closed down and students not having the resources they need to learn. its extremely unfortunate how easily some politicians can abuse their power. As long as it doesn’t affect themselves, the wellbeing of the people is of no concern to them

  • I'm a Sri Lankan and I love this video because it showcases 10x times more than the things shown through out local TV channels within Sri Lanka. Most people in Sri Lanka does not even understand the current situation (how this happened, why it happened and what the things which needs to be done to get out of the problem). Thank you for making such a detailed and important documentry 👏. I hope that other countries can learn from this and make it so that they do not go through the same scenario. It is a harsh experience for everyone including children and infants.

  • As a Sri Lankan who was in the middle of all this chaos I can confidently say that this creator has done a lot of research and is well educated on the matter. One massive thing you missed about the drainage of country's funds though. Rajapaksas put together a band of cronies to steal public money very effectively through various deals. That's the reason they were involved in so many construction projects. Just look for Aspen medical scandal. The known, calculated amount robbed by Rajapaksas for the moment is 18 billion USD. They created many more billionaires around the world, who took part in their crimes. That's why the public is demanding to have "their money back". Also they were mass murderers. They would quickly and effectively murder/disappear anybody who'd stand in their way. Mostly journalists, murdered in broad daylight. They appointed a bunch of spineless cronies as military chiefs and used Sri Lankan military as their personal guard dogs. They still are. These are all facts and the most important ones.

The man sat next to me asked where I wanna go and he will wake me up when we arrived. He unfortunately left earlier than me, but asked the next person to wake me up. The next man who sat next to me woke me up and said we have arrived. It was early in the morning, the bus was full with people, but someone offered me a seat because I will be longer on the bus than her. I will never forget that bus ride. Just a proof that there are nice people out there. My heart goes to the Sri Lankans.. I hope someday things will get better. Comeback stronger!

  • In 2018 December, I had visited Sri Lanka. I went to Colombo, Kandy, Willpattu, Sigiriya, Polonnaruwa, Pinnewala, Negombo .... what I beautiful contry...soo greenary wonderful people, wonderful food, famous tea and coffee plantations......so many historical places, so enriched culture.... Being an Indian I feel proud that we share so many common things we Sri Lanka from time immemorial from the time of great Lankan King Raavana.... and Sigiriya ..uff My dream come true...such a fascinating place the architecture the concept.... its unimaginable... ..In those days I had seen massive construction was going on with Chinese Aid...even I have seen Chinese labours working there. what caught my attention was huge Banner hanging down from the top of such tall buildings written in Chinese language only... It was awkward as ..if you are doing something in collaboration with another country at their soil with their labour ... atleast in the advertisement you mention their native language...but it was ONLY Chinese... The owner of our Hotel in Sigiriya became a good friend of mine I express this to him and said Sri Lanka should be carefull about China and their policy.... because historically China is a dictatorial nation... ...and today you see ... they have just ruined this beautiful country..... During our stay in Negombo, we used to go a nearby restaurant, just 5 mints walk from our staying hotel, for meals.Their continental dishes were splendid... The restaurant was run by a family.. Chief owner a single mother Lady, her little daughter and her old parents.... that little daughter became a good friend of my child and the use to play together...the owner lady was good friend of my wife.... They all wish a goodbye on the final day and said "Come back again..." ...It still echo within us.. I feel so disheartened for Sri Lanka.. Love from an Indian

Most Western Democracies are not as nepotism based as Sri Lanka either which is also a major factor to their issues. If I had the choice to choose between my family to run a country or a bunch of experts, I would opt for the experts. Most western countries are not islands either which was another problem that just made the situation worse. It probably will happen to other countries but as the video says, other governments should really be learning from this. They all have access to the correct information it is just down to them whether or not they believe then use it properly.

All Sri Lankans are now paying the price of complacency and not speaking out in the face of corruption. Increasing amounts of people are resorting to petty theft for survival. Education of an entire generation has been ruined. But these hardships have made us strong and resilient and we will keep working to recover the economy of this country and also save it's soul.

By working together we can help each other overcome the crises and challenges that are faced. I'm from New Zealand and we have close links with Sri Lanka, a Commonwealth country, with many Sri Lankans living here. Most of the parliamentarians at that time were guard dogs for the Rajapakses. We got intel from India about the attacks. We could’ve prevented the attack. But this family used this tragedy for garnering votes. They used the attack to incite hatred against Muslims. They were claiming how they ended a civil war and if they were in charge, this wouldn’t have happened. Majority of the people of the country sadly fell for this trap. They voted for this corrupt family. Thank you, Cold Fusion. This gave chills. Aragalayata Jaya! 🔥🇱🇰

It is a 20+ year dictatorship yes, but the country is in continuous progress. After the dictator was kicked out of power by the people who thought they were doing the right thing, The flagbearers of the revolution made many affiliated businesses very happy and rich. The rapid growth of the country halted. Farmers are killed secretly, funds taken, The very first nuclear power project that was about to be completed was stopped making billions of investments lost to thin air. Infrastructure projects turned into family monument buildingprojects etc. The conclusion is, the family that succeeded the “Throne” was no better or even worse that the “Evil” that the people were trying to defeat.

One thing that's worrying me is that it seems a lot of people are investing in different ponzi and pyramid schemes online. People take loans with 20%+ interest rates to invest in these schemes, and when they crash (which they will) I'm worried how all those people will manage and what will happen. Sri Lanka is a wonderful country. Nature is fantastic, the people are nice, the food is awesome. I keep hoping it will be a popular tourist destination soon but just as things are looking to get better something happens, like the terrorist attack, or covid, or the topics of this video and in the future maybe all those in debth because of these schemes. • I am a 18 year old Sri Lankan still living in Sri Lanka. It is absolutely appalling to see what this family has done to our beautiful nation. Seeing people staying for days in queues with some even dying just breaks my heart as well as thinking of the number of people who don’t have money to provide for themselves and their families. While we can celebrate for a short time now that Gotabaya has resigned now the next step is to slowly rebuild this nation which involves the role of the interim president Ranil Wickramasinghe who is known to be quite crude. I pray for my nation and all the people to one day come back to where we used to be when we had fuel and supplies such as food and when our currency wasn’t in the state it is now. Nobody should be allowed to put their entire country in debt without express permission from their people for each and every loan. The biggest problem with modern economics is that PMs are given a blank cheque and told to just spend whatever they feel like because public debt will cover it, it's irresponsible it's theft and it's just morally wrong on all aspects we wouldn't allow anybody else to get away with this, why do we allow the governments? • As a Sri Lankan I feel conflicted watching videos like this because on the one hand I want the story to go out, on the other hand I know some details will be wrong or missing. I appreciate you shining the spotlight but here is my list of ammendments to your story: 1. The end of the war included many war crimes against the Tamil people of the North and East. All foreign journalists were cleared from the war zone before the final stages of the war to remove witnesses. 2. The majority of economic growth in Sri Lanka was as a result of the war ending and a lot of foreign investment happening in the country. The country saw very little benefit from the Chinese loans and investment projects. All projects funded through Chinese loans were overpriced with a huge proportion of the money being embezzled by corrupt politicians. A lot of the projects like the Matale airport, Hambantota port, Lotus Theatre and Lotus Tower have no benefit to the people they are projects commissioned solely to embezzle money. 3. In 2015 the Rajapaksas were voted out of power, because despite the outward growth, and 'beautification' of the country, the cost of living to the average Sri Lankan was increasing. 4. However, the government that took over had many scandals and public foibles. Then in 2018 the Rajapaksas through other agents began a campaign of anti-muslim racism, leading to incidents of mob violence and the destruction of muslim businesses. This campaign allowed them to win local government elections. Seeing this upswell of support Mahinda Rajapaksa tried to stage a coup in 2018 but after 40 days had to give it up and resign. 5. The anti-muslim campaigns culminated in the ostensibly Isis led Easter bombings of 2019 which most Sri Lankans believe the Rajapaksas, working with Maithreepala Sirisena the then president, allowed to happen. This incident was the first big blow to Sri Lankan tourism and led the Rajapaksas, who are seen as strong anti-terrorism, milataristic and anti-muslim candidates to win the 2019 elections. 6. In late 2021 the Sri Lankan government began printing currency at an enormous rate while simoultaneously fixing the exchange rate that the banks were allowed to trade under. This led to the majority of foreign currency earners and businesses exchanging foreign currency on the black market where the exchange rate was fairer than what the banks were forced to offer. This accelerated the government's shortage of foreign currency reserved dramatically. 7. I don't know where this 130% inflation rate comes from. The cost of fuel when available increased by 400%, the cost of gas increased by 300%, the cost of food by 300%, the cost of electronics by 250%, and we are only 6 months into the year. 8. More than 60 people have died waiting in queues for fuel, gas and other essential items. More people have died because of a lack of essential medicines or petrol for ambulances. Over 20 Sri Lankans have died in the protests.

  • I'm a Sri Lankan CS student. Aside from the economic crisis, unable to travel, the constant power cuts, the negativity that comes with the depressing situation of the country all due to greed, can result in a mental toll. Here's my personal way of combating this challenge 1. Working out (it's just a 30 min workout, but the adrenaline pump, the power, and resilience brought through the after work out has definitely contributed to my sanity) 2. Move (since I'm on summer vacation, and almost all education is conducted remote, there is no actual reason to step outside. But take an ACTIVE choice to do so. Even if it's just walking on the pavements. My personal recommendation, if allowed, go for a sport, a badminton court, swimming pool, step out If in curfew, as is right now, make sure to shift your workspace constantly, somewhere there is a dose of sunlight. Make sure you get a dose of a greenery sight as well) 3. Focus on what you can control (let's be real, this is a big big mess, and honestly it's not your fault. So try not to let it get to you. Yes you need to be aware, but don't dwell in that pit, try not to be consumed by the feedback loop. For example something that I've been focusing is my career. I've been working day and night on getting that remote internship and hopefully get some USD on the process. In that obsession I find little to no time to dwell in this misery. It may seem as if I live in a bubble, but if that bubble saves my sanity, I'd rather stay in it) To all my Sri Lankan students, I know everything is so messed up. And I'm so proud for putting through this mess, and choosing to stay alive, I'm proud of you. And I hope everything gets better.

I don't know how practical this might seem, but I've basically resolved to get an education (not depending on uni but self study, which is possible given my field in computer science) so spend my time studying and polishing my skills so I can get a remote job and earn atleast for myself, to give myself a better life. This sounds materialistic, but I honestly can't control what happens around me, instead I can focus on first to lift myself and if that works then maybe lift another and another. But now my focus is to learn enough so I can get my skills all polished. My point being try to focus on what you can control. The few things you can control. Like your effort to try to be healthy, maybe learning a new skill (there's enough and more free content on the internet) , being kind to yourself and if it's within your reach maybe to another as well. I remember in my orientation the principal told us a story. She said that when she was going to AL classes early morning she found that the streets were dark. Her father then said, don't look at the dark road ahead, focus on reaching the next light lamp. The future is dim, may even be dark, but we need to take that extra effort to focus on what's coming ahead, the very next milestone. If you are in OLs then maybe getting through a good OL result and maybe learning few soft skills on the way, don't worry about university at that level. Take one step at a time. One breath at a time. And remember taking one step forward is better than staying numb. It's hard. Everything is messed up. And it's okay if you feel lost. It's okay to breakdown. It's okay to feel pain. Feel that. Then take a deep breath and see what you can do next

    • That caught my eye too, the sing-along. I hope that when Sri Lanka is back on the path to prosperity and peace, that the new leaders hold public musical events at the residence to commemorate the moment. People power works.

Democide more people have died at the hands of their own governments than all wars and genocides combined. Remember they are not good people no good people work for the government and even worse people enforce their will on us. We must end it all before its too late.

    • That's because a mob is a simple minded creature. It does whatever will sate it's animalistic hunger. Even if that's having fun in the middle of the crisis. In the first place storming into the palace is a meaningless action since the rajpaksha had already fled. What they were doing was for distraction so they don't have to face the harsh reality outside

  • It breaks my heart. I've been many times to Sri Lanka and fell in love with the country, its people, culture, nature, cuisine and so on. All power lies with the people. No government should ever forget this. And the people should never forget, that you can't trust a single government. They all need to be checked and held responsible.

    • Thats BS wishful thinking. All power lies with the plutocrats, and oligarchs. aka the families that have the $$$$. and if/when shite goes wrong, they bail and arent held responsible. you are thinking too ideolistically, and not realistically (as in, how the world really works). "The rich will always f*ck over the poor, always have, always will" from the movie "Platoon" spoken by some African American Seargent.

    • @@caralho5237 Perhaps one day when everyone is enlightened and elects to interact exclusively in cooperative interpersonal relationships... For sheer survival under the current circumstances, you need a modern civilization with delegated expertise. Otherwise, you will be colonized by ruthless foreign rulers who don't care about your philosophy. Just see what happened to various American First Nations who were pretty enlightened and self-sufficient but did not prepare themselves for the invasion of European powers who had centuries of modern warfare experience, and deadly bugs on their bodies. They failed to send out spies back to Europe to report back on enemy capacity to wage war, or establish weapons trade. Some enslaved natives returned to Indian territories and reported on what they saw. Perhaps that frightened some tribes to not join into the resistance. In any case, without a modern society, you are a sitting duck to be picked by whatever ruthless power happens to be interested in taking whatever you've got.

  • I'm from the UK, but my father (who I never got the chance to meet) was born in Sri Lanka. I've wanted to go there my whole life to see the place he called home for the first years of his life. When the civil war ended in 2009, I thought Sri Lanka would continue its progress into stability and prosperity. Seeing this is heartbreaking, and it may be many years before the country recovers. I hope the people of Sri Lanka can survive this and come out stronger than before. I'm still waiting to meet you all some day.
