Le Tour de France returns to France! While we're not approaching the mountains yet, with six categorised climbs on the menu, it will be by no means a gentle welcome to French soil. Will the breakaway have their day, or will the bunch control the chaos and contest the victory?

  • Can we just take minute to give a HUGE shout out to the GCN Racing editors/uploaders for not having a spoiler in the title or thumbnail? Great to see. I watched the stage live, but if I miss any future stages I'll come to GCN Racing first to see the highlights.

    • I love 2-5 minute punchy hills in the last 5-10km of a road bike race. Need more of these stage finishes. That was so fun to see TJV burn through 2 guys in all out efforts to set it all up for WvA. Played perfectly.

    • @@cyclingboss469 Exactly, perfect execution. WVA has been so consistent in the first 4 stages, it’s unbelievable. Although it seemed he wasn’t perfect in the 1st stage (but he still finished 2nd, beating the world champion) This stage does bag the question what others were expecting before that last climb. Riders such as MVDP were completely out of position while this seemed pretty predictable and riders such as he don’t have that many chances this TdF

And a few of those second places were photo finishes. Absolutely ridiculous.

In fact, it ended up being smart for his teammates to sit back so they could hang out at the head of the chase group and slowing it down as much as possible, helping him remain alone up front--so much so that they fooled Phillipsen into thinking he won, lol.

    • If he had tried to bring Jonas with him then Ineos, Bora and UAE would have put in a concerted effort to chase them down - the chances of Jonas getting a GC advantage would have been very small. • I'd like Van Aert to change his focus to GC contending. I'm fairly convinced he could make it difficult for Pogacar if he lost weight and improved his climbing. Everything else he is already better or on par with Pogi.

    @briangoossens1519@briangoossens1519 Жыл бұрын
    • He'd sacrifice his punching and sprinting abilities by focusing on climbing. That's just how our muscles work. It's possible it might still be enough to beat Pogi and all others. But considering his well-trained body now, he'd have to sacrifice a lot to be on par with Pogi in the mountain stages. You can't underestimate the physiological changes by losing 7-8 kgs and changing focus. It's a balance.

      @MrVKenneth@MrVKenneth Жыл бұрын
    • @@MrVKenneth I'm aware but there's many successful examples in the past. Thomas, Wiggins come to mind, although they don't have anyone as dominant as Pogacar to fight against! If I was Wout I'd do it after winning Roubaix and Tour of Flanders as I'm sure he wants to win that first but you can't say he doesn't have serious potential for GC battle. It's up to him and his team in the end!

      @briangoossens1519@briangoossens1519 Жыл бұрын
    • @@briangoossens1519 I don’t think Pagacar is that dominant. He got lucky the 1st year and Roglic abandoned last year. Let’s see what he does this year. If he wins , then yes , he’ll be dominant. But we’re not there yet.
