  • I for one appreciate it that you don't raise your kids to be fearful of everything and wrapped in cotton wool. Inquisitive children survived through the ages and this scared-of-everything-society we have now does not bode well for the future. I think you are great parents

    • @@TheNewbys I was one of those parents that were overly protective with my first born. I didn’t realize how important even using scissors was in developing their fine motor skills. I soon realized my child had a lot of catch-up to do in kindergarten. With our second child I was more aware but still learning. He had a bit of a speech delay and we were asked if he ever had a stage of putting everything in his mouth. And come to think of it he was almost 3 and had skipped that stage. Turns out the speech pathologist said children develop a lot of tiny muscles in their mouth this way. So here we were asking our toddler to put things in his mouth. 😮 I was dumbfounded. We were also asked to put him in a school environment to help him build communication skills. We found a great parent-child co-op preschool. And it had the most amazing outdoor environment. Zip lines, gardens, Guinea pigs and rabbit pens, compost turner, timber climbing structure overlooking the whole area, tire swings, trike paths, and different rotating art, science, cooking, wood working stations. Well it was a child’s dream. And a little bit of an overprotective parent’s nightmare. 😂 My son was such a pro with stack of wood, nails, child sized hammer and child sized hand drill. I had to learn to step back and trust. Of course we parents kept the kids safe. One time at my dads my son started picking up the hammer and nails my dad was working with and my dad said, “No, your going to hurt yourself”. I told my dad, “No worries. He’s a pro now”. Sure enough, my dad drew a line on the board and told my son to hammer the nails there and so he did. It was a proud mama moment. My son was only 4. 😊 Sorry for the long story. But you’re doing a wonderful job and your children will be so creative and have wonderful problem solving skills. Bravo mom and dad!

    • Agree, but my sister and I were big on reading and playing dolls. We were very reserved. My Mom use to make us go outside! Lol! And yet we always knew when to come in. Then, when stationed in Germany, we lived in the community, and a cute little village. Our kids preteens, and they were able to go walk about in the forest’s walk trails and play in forest attempting to build a fort. 😅 No way they could have done that now. They are now 29 & 31.

  • I think you know how much I admire you both and what you want to achieve. I’m a retired early years teacher and I have never once thought you would allow your boys to be unsafe, because, yes, there are very realistic looking play tools for all kinds of ‘help’ available. Children learn best by doing, being able to investigate things and by the lovely conversations and interactions you have with both your boys. You keep doing what you are doing, ignore any negativity. You are creating the best childhoods for Crusoe and Sawyer. Take care x

  • I'm 62 now but when I was about 7 years old... I was helping my daddy dig the garden, he was giving me precise instructions, watching over my shoulder to ENSURE I was safe. I jumped on the spade, missed the 'shoulders' and ripped my shin open. My fabulous Dad died when I was 13 years old and occasionally I happen to glance upon the scar and a flood of beautiful memories cascade within me of the times I 'helped' my Dad. Crusoe and Sawyer are in incredible free spirited, down to earth, loving hands.... Take no heed to the armchair critics. Big hugs all around! xxx PS. Find some Comfrey and plant it near where your spring occasionally overflows. This is an incredible assert to the feeding of your plants. You get about three cuts a year of comfrey over the season; shove it in a bucket with a lid on. You can add nettles leaves, plantain and dandelion leaves too. It rots downs... smells like horse manure and forms a liquid, which you then dilute...and feed to anything that fruits n flowers. Natural Comfrey grows prolifically in its 'happy' place, however, there is a variety called 'Bocking 14' that is less invasive. It is FABULOUS ... a bit like you lot!🤣🤣💞

  • I love that you are NOT helicopter parents, and I know you are watching him closely and letting him learn on his own! Regarding the composting, there are many ways to compost, and that all things will decompose all by themselves. There are ways that speed up the process, but they require more attention. Hot composting requires a minimum 1 meter square pile. The good thing about getting the bin to 140 to 150 degree F internal temp is it will kill weed seeds and harmful pathogens. It’s also a balance of ‘greens’ and ‘browns’ to get to that high temperature. Sometimes I turn my bins regularly, once a week, and in the winter I leave the alone and only add kitchen scraps. It’s a science and an art. Trial and trial, there are no real mistakes, because nature will decompose no matter what. There is a ton of information on KZhead about all the varied ways to compost. You’re doing a super job, the hard part is starting!!! Love to you all!❤

  • It is obvious that you two are great parents, please don't let those who have probably never experienced life with a toddler bother you. We used to live by a pond, and rather than be afraid of everything, I taught my little children their boundaries and limitations, and also taught them how to swim just in case...For kids to be given an appropriate amount of freedom and independence teaches them confidence, among other things. What a great adventurous childhood! And, Tara, my love, you are WONDER WOMAN! Congrats on your compost bins; great job! And so great to have the advice and help of a wonderful, talented husband like John. You make a great team.💖 See you next time! Love from CT, USA

  • Great to see you released from baby duties enough to be able to have your own building project, Tara. I love your new compost bin system. Go girl! Who needs boring running up and down the hill when you can get your exercise doing something fun, useful and productive. Seeing Crusoe in the wheelbarrow brought back so many happy memories from my time living on a little island when we used to get Poppy from A to B on the island by wheelbarrow when it was too far to walk. We also had a sofa on a tractor trailer for longer journeys! Crusoe is getting the best life, learning, copying, using real tools (stuff the haters!) as well as his toys. So funny he sleeps with his chainsaw. What a great life you're giving him and Sawyer.

  • It's not easy pleasing everybody. Give yourself a little bit of grace. If anyone summed it up, it was Curseo when he said it was "Sawyer," who broke it. So let these "comments," and "opinions," good or bad slide down the hill and be put in the compost pile to be used as "fertilizer," on another project. Be happy, and thankful, and just live life. 😊

  • Amazing accomplishments - especially so with two under 3 in tow! Like many others have no doubt said, I think the way you're raising your children is amazing - having them at your side as you work is just the dream. There are way too many overly fearful people who don't consider that they aren't seeing the full picture - that this is highly edited reel. There are a million moments in between filled with tenderness which can't be captured because you're the ones holding the camera. I did want to thank you, as in part you've helped to inspire me to get back to my garden - 2 years ago I had a TERRIBLE time with it; issues from pests, to soil issues...you name it. Top to bottom it was the worst year I'd had in my years of gardening. I never got around to starting it last year but this year I've got lots of progress and promise. thanks! (fingers crossed the darn birds, squirrels aphids, rats & mice, skunks, etc give me a break!)

  • If I could I'd leave you another subscription and 20 likes for each episode! And 10 extra just for Crusoe. I suppose you should build him a climbing-house-cave-hybrid-construction from the left over palettes! I am glad that you're not those overprotective helicopter parents, but let this beautiful human being make his own experiences and memories (and soon he will teach that to Sawer). Adventures sometimes can be painful, but that's life. I was allowed to run, dig, build, mess, water, climb, jump, hang around in our huge Brazilian garden. I have only the best memories, yet I probably hurt myself while playing monkey on those three palm trees, eating unripe oranges from those bitter orange trees full of thorns, cutting cactuses into slices and "baking" them into "fish and chips" plus "tasty" deserts of mud and dirty water, chopping those camellias and making "remedies" of them, hiding in caves under dense bushes, plus sniffing the intense perfume of orchids, freesias and osmanthus most of those days. I was similarly trustful with my boys, always having my lavender essential oil at hand, which in most little accidents was the best helper, which they still know an appreciate now as young adults. One of my eldest son's first words was "oil" when he hurt himself! Only once stitches were needed (incident in school!) and once x-rays for the other lad (incident in school!). As I (now 63) they never ever broke a bone! Good mental and physical health along with teaching mindfulness seem to be important for the upbringing of the youngest generation. Plus a balanced mostly healthy diet of course, which helps with mental and physical health again.

  • Well done Tara on your compost area! In the video you stated poring concrete for your greenhouse slab. My family uses concrete footings (dig down so the structure will be flush to the ground) to "anchor" the building and five stability. We use a weed barrier or cardboard to prevent grass/weeds from growing. But IF we decided to move the greenhouse sometime later, no concrete slab. I understand it may not work for everyone. I just thought I'd share. Sorry for waffling on. See ya Wednesday ❤

I think it’s wonderful that you not only allow, but encourage Crusoe to be such an adventurous, outgoing child, who lives life fully. A free range childhood is a genuine gift to give your children. It must be so hard difficult to have your life scrutinized and criticized, without people knowing the full picture. It’s a shame they make you feel like you have to defend yourself and your methods. As far as I can see, you’re doing a wonderful job, and both your sons will grow up to be confident, strong, hard working, intrepid explorers of the world, just like their amazing parents. BTW, your compost bins are wonderful. Good salvaging of materials on hand.

  • The best way to parenting, and I am an older person so I know, is to do it your way. You're doing awesome. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

  • Excellent job Tara on the compost bins!🤗 Also, you two are excellent parents! One thing that’s very clear from watching your channel is how much love, care, and supervision you devote to Crusoe. You achieve the fine balance (which is hard with a toddler) of keeping him safe while still allowing him to explore, investigate, and enjoy the farm. Well done mom and dad!😊💗

  • Great job! 🥳 Honestly- seeing how you made these compost bins made a lot more sense to me than any other DIY compost how-tos I've seen on youtube. So many people overcomplicate things. So thank you. I too have been wanting to make these and have ALSO been putting it off for whatever reason. You've inspired me! ☺🙌 PS Crusoe should be voted coolest baby on youtube 🥰
