And Liu Kang had three fractured ribs (in the scene where he hits his back on the pillar there were two of them)

  • The greeting signs with the hands just before the fight between Lui Kang and Shang Tsung was a nice touch. A former housemate of mine told me back then that Shang's flat hand under the fist meant '(for) the underworld', as an opposite version of what Liu Kang did and what seems to be done more often in martial arts tradition. I don't know what was really meant, but this explanation made some sense to me for this movie. The tricky thing here, however, is that there is a Netherrealm in the franchise already, and that this world is actually hostile to Shang Tsung's (Outworld). Fun fact: I don't know if it has been mentioned in the game franchise, but the tv series Mortal Kombat: Conquest revealed that Shang Tsung was actually a warrior fighting for Earth in his very first tournament, guided by Raiden, a tournament which he won. During that tournament, he was taken to an audience with Outworld's ruler, the self-claimed emperor Shao Kahn. Kahn saw potential in Shang Tsung's rather ruthless fighting methods and offered to teach him to become stronger and more skilled by extracting souls from the Outworldian victims during the fights in the tournament in exchange for his soul. Raiden saw dark influences in Shang Tsung and begged him not to use his new ability, because it would corrupt him and cost him his soul anyway, but it was in vain. When he almost lost the final fight, he countered by using the soul extraction. The result was that he won the tournament, but that it was counted as a win for Outworld instead of Earth. He didn't age during the next generation. One generation later he fought Kung Lao in the next tournament, and almost succeeded in extracting his soul, but Kung Lao defeated him. Shang Tsung was then completely enslaved and sent to the Kobalt mines by Shao Kahn as the punishment for his failure. He would be unable to defeat Kung Lao (who's aging process was on hold as a reward) in future tournaments and no other Outworld warrior would be able to defeat Kung Lao either, until Shang Tsung found the Shokan, an underground race of four-armed creatures. He selected their new prince, Goro, to participate in the next tournament after Goro killed his own brother, who was the old prince, in a battle for the Shokan throne, which was part of a plan which Shang Tsung orchestrated. I don't remember exactly what was the actual reason for that battle to take place, but I believe it was because of the Shokan's inferior position in comparison to their race's natural enemies, the centaurs, and in particular their leader and Shao Kahn's general, Motaro. Shang Tsung eventually convinced Kahn to send Goro into the tournament as his representative before Kung Lao could finish a streak of winning 10 tournaments by winning one more, which would be enough to successfully defend Earth and be protected from Outworld's forces by the tournament's rules of the Elder Gods for the rest of the world's existence. Goro defeated Kung Lao, ending the streak with only 9 victories. Goro kept winning tournaments, until he was on a 9 win streak. Then Raiden, thundergod and Earth's protector of the tournament rules, approached the best warriors by himself, which was unusual for a god, for one last chance to keep Outworld's forces from winning another tournament and gaining the right to invade Earth. Raiden then found Liu Kang, Johnny Cage and Sonya Blade. Are you going to watch and react to the sequel as well? I hope you enjoy it, because it wasn't as much of a success with either critics or fans as this one.

The guy who plays Raiden Christopher Lambert also plays in another epic sword cult classic movie called Highlander you should see it,. Fyi Johnny Cage was the first character made for mortal Kombat and was Inspired by Van Damme and his famous movie Blood Sport which you should see. • The character of Sonya Blade was inspired by American martial artist and actress Cynthia Rothrock. In fact, when the first _Mortal Kombat_ game was under production the creators were hoping that Cynthia would agree to be digitised and appear in the game but she turned out to be too expensive. Sonya in this movie was supposed to have been played by Cameron Diaz but she severely injured her wrist shortly before production began so Bridgette Wilson replaced her.

    • There was a similar plan for the casting of Johnny Cage. They tried to cast Jean Claude van Damme, but he turned it down, and I believe that that was because he was already working or had just worked on another video game adaptation for the role of Guile: Street Fighter. They also based Johnny Cage's regular moves in the game on Jean Claude van Damme's, like his split.

  • emma, Liu Kang said he was the descendant of Kung Lao , you can see his adventures in the tv show, Mortal Kombat : Conquest, it was on late night tv on uhf channels in the 90s, it is really cheesy and good

  • I love your reactions, your style, your emotions. I would like to suggest a movie for you. The Island with Evan McGregor, Scarlett Johansson, Sean Bean and the late Micheal Clarke Duncan from the green mile. Also a lot of actions but much more philosophical. Advice: if you do it dont watch trailer or synopsis because it spoilers the plot. You like scores and even the main title is epic.

  • i love this one more then the remake, maybe because i was born in the 60s, and have lived and seen all those wonderful older movies and TV shows, certainly not comparable with the bad re-makes they make today, cheers Emma

  • The actor who plays Kano (the guy with the metal ... thing on his face, with one red eye) was going to be James Bond. Daniel Craig's James Bond. But the actor overdosed RIP. True story.

  • The person who remixed reptile's theme also did the music for that freeway Chase scene in the 2nd matrix movie. Go back and rewatch that scene and you'll totally hear the inspiration from this song.

  • Another movie this director did was for The video game Resident Evil. It's not very faithful to the actual video game but is still a pretty good movie without knowledge of the video games to compare it to. The other movies get further and further from the source material but are for the most part fairly entertaining to watch as a franchise. Another reason you'd enjoy at least the first one is the score was done by Marilyn Manson.
