  • Hey Zeos I hope you are well. I got a question its gonna be a long one with followup probably. I own Yamaha RX-V375 receiver and I love it. It doesnt got Atmos but it packs a punch. It can do DTS-HD-MA and all sorts of DTS variants. Movies and music sound awesome but what I like the most about it is "Gaming Mode" when using headphones. Thanks to Dolby Headphone you can clearly tell when someone is below or above you it just opens-up soundstage all around and it doent sound like some fake 7.1 usb soundcards that are mixing left and right channel and losses imaging. Unfortunately my headphone out broke and now I've got 2 options, fix it or buy audiophile dac/amp combo or stand alone cos prices for receivers went up by a lot since I bought mine. I know dac/amp gonna be good for music but I'm not sure if those can do DTS, Dolby Headphone as I never owned any. My budget picks are modi/magni, zen dac/can, jds labs atom dac/amp, topping dx3 or maybe mix of modi/zen can. Probably cheaper option will be fixing headphone out on my receiver but Im just tempted to buy something new :)

I think going to buy them, it is really whole new level. And even that i know outside Russia and CIS they cost more (600-700 usd i belive compare to 450 in a current moment) - they sure as hell can compete in these and even higher price bracket.

    • Pretty sure they've had a look around and realized that, lacking the heavy industrialization, established productions chains, and cheap labor force in parts of China, artisanal products are the way to go. That people are willing to pay a premium for craftsmanship and quality was already a given, just look at Japan and their knives and fountain pens (e.g. Namiki)

  • graphs = tonality imaging, soundstage, dynamics = technicality Measurements aren't everything but.... Some basics are necessary like a Speaker without a smooth Directivity index simply cannot be calibrated. Its a design flaw. Timbre is different from front and early reflections. Without some objective measurements, any amount of subjective opinions become irrelevant. Industry standards are poor, so i wouldn't blame zeos for not relying on measurements and graphs that don't exist on the product page or manual. i suggest to look at independent authority measurements when available for reference even if its off camera or script. i know it can be daunting to understand what to look at and what matters but a good start is youtube: 2015 presentation at the CIRMMT Floyd Toole - Sound reproduction - art and science/opinions and facts

    @teachonlywhatiseasy@teachonlywhatiseasy2 жыл бұрын
    • If a headphone sounds good it sounds good, no? Measurements are going to be used as a support to an opinion or experience when it comes to a product like a headphone. Im not totally against measurements because they can help people see whether or not a product is for them, but thats sort of beside the point

      @edwinbeta2806@edwinbeta28062 жыл бұрын
    • The problem is, it's usually only one graph. At what volume was it made? Is it even the volume I will use the headphones on? What does the graph looks like on low, mid and high volume?! I tested a headphone that is an failed attempt at open back. It sounds pretty decent at low volume but tonality completely falls apart at high volume. I tested a headphone that is fairly neutral at low volume, when you crank it up it sounds like only the low frequencies are turned up. Having only one graph for tonality means still mostly having no clue how it's going to sound.

    • @@miagi1337 zeos has a very good take on why he doesn't do tier lists. i agree with that reasoning. He compares himself to a control. Although, without a measurable control, its 100% subjective. The idea of scientific method is to make it easier to combat false pattern recognition. That's all there is to science. doesn't matter who is doing the measurements and what follows. Sure, if you have another control, propose it, share the methodology and your experiments results. others will refute or corroborate it which is usually called peer review in scientific journals. Otherwise its your word against mine. Zeos is a smart person, otherwise i wouldn't be here. but there is always room if there is openness. see toole's video, he is a rare one

      @crodrig@crodrig2 жыл бұрын
    • @@teachonlywhatiseasy I mostly agree esp. about Tier lists. The problem I have with graphs on headphones is how little data it is. It is just the loudness of isolated frequency over the spectrum. How often do I listen to just one frequency. How would a graph look like where the headphone sweeps thru the frequency with an 86 dB 1 kHz constant signal. How would that compare to another headphone. How is peak pressure. Just that tonality graph is the simple and lazy consideration of data. For example "The HEADPHONE Show" in particular is annoying me, he uses and talks about one measurement to increase his credibility. But to me that is poor, it is like trying to judge a sports car by the basic numbers. The point is, you can judge are race car by numbers resp. data, racing engineers do that, but they go really deep into log data, analysis and compare it with simulation figures. "The HEADPHONE Show" barley scratches the surface and presents himself like he is the audio scientist among audio reviews.
