Edgar Degas for Kids is an art history video for children to learn about French Impressionist artist Edgar Degas.
The French artist Edgar Degas was one of the most recognized artists from the 19th century having painted and sketched pastoral hunting excursions on horseback and tranquil scenes of daily home life. But perhaps what he is most known for are his airy pastels of beautiful ballet dancers. Born in Paris, France on July 19, 1834 the young Degas was fascinated by art as a child and spent his time drawing and sketching. He was raised in an artistic environment as a child which led him to schools such as the Lycée Louis-LU-Graw in Paris and the EE-cole de Beaux Arts in 1855 before moving to Rome to study art further. Degas was influenced by great classical artists such as Rembrandt and Boticelli. But while Degas learned the classics of art history, a new style of painting emerged in the late 19th century and fascinated him... Impressionism. The Impressionist movement was about capturing the feeling or "impression" of a moment, rather than a realistic representation of the subject.
Edgar Degas became particularly interested in capturing the movement and energy of dancers which became a central theme in his work. Degas's paintings were known for their soft, muted colors and loose brushstrokes, which gave them a dreamlike quality. While some of his paintings and drawings showed dancers on the stage performing, others explored their everyday life practicing behind the scenes, a glimpse of their lives not seen by an audience. Most of Degas' artworks were paintings or pastel drawings. A pastel is a type of material used in art that adds pigment, or color to a canvas or paper. It can come in many forms such as a stick or crayon and can be made of different materials. Artists like to use pastels because they can add lovely color and be smudged and blended easily. Degas used pastels in many of his artworks. The artist also created sculptures in his lifetime, which he preferred to create as he aged due to poor eyesight. Creating sculptures of dancers allowed Degas to continue creating the impression of the dancers moving, spinning and balancing.
Edgar Degas died on September 27, 1917, in Paris, France. His unique style and perspective have influenced countless artists and audiences who admire his elegant interpretations of dance. His artworks are included in museums all over the world including the Musée d'Orsay in Paris, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, and the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.

ABOUT OUR ART HISTORY VIDEOS:
Comic Kids is a Miami-based non-profit that helps children in the community learn art through comics, cartoons and books. We create "Art History for Kids" videos as short educational videos that we use in our classes which also serve as resources for teachers and homeschoolers to help their children learn about art history. The goal of these videos is to increase children's art education by exposing them to art history at a young age and videos can be for lower up until high school children. Our videos will show between 20 - 50 photos of famous artists and their paintings, drawings and sculptures so that children can get a vast knowledge and overview of their styles and techniques. We also include information of the artist and their education including the art history movements which explains the importance of the art history timelines they were a part of. All of our videos include specific art terms such as Impressionism, Modernism, Modern Art, Abstract Art, Cubism, Pop Art, Surrealism etc. We keep the videos under five minutes so children may stay engaged as they learn about famous artists, art styles, art definitions, historical artists, art movements, painting techniques and modern art concepts. By releasing videos consistently, we help teachers build a consistent art history curriculum for kids in their classrooms.
