Jude Bellingham is thriving at Real Madrid under Carlo Ancelotti, but this was all planned 20 years ago, before he was born. This is my analysis in to Ancelotti's tactics and why his diamond formation has been the plan all along.

    • 1) It was an alternative. He said "If the BBC is fine, they should play". 2) It had Marcelo in and one of the best versions of Carvajal covering the sides. Now the team has nothing nearly as reliable. Neither Fran García nor Mendy nor Lucas Vázques nor nowadays Carvajal can compare, and the diamond´s main disdvantage is its lack of side coverage on the midfield and even the top third. 3) Zidane had Benzema, not the best Benzema but still a great forward, and Ronaldo who was always totally compatible as a striker. Compare that to Vinicius and Rodrygo. They both are very emphatically wingers, Vini more than Rodrygo but still, they are very clearly not strikers. The only striker Ancelotti has to put up there is Joselu, who is not even at Madrid level in my opinion. This is not to blame dear Carlo for anything, he is doing what he can with the crumbs he was given plus the many many injuries the team has suffered. If you wanna point fingers, you always have football´s favourite evil mastermind Florentino Pérez, who was seconds away from putting the entire club on mortgage to get his name next to Mbappé, and that´s why that dear attention whore refused to sign any players that wouldn´t make headlines or prevent him from signing his white whale, and as a result Madrid has pretty much no decent defenders. I´m not a Madrid fan, I actually support Barcelona. Lord knows we have a bunch of problems of our own, and we also have a filthy corrupt dictator-I mean president. But it makes me sick seeing so many spanish clubs going to crap and people apparently seem to think the diamond is some genius tactic when in fact it´s a byproduct of something that doesn´t even have anything to do with the sport directly: a dictator, money, fame, and power.

  • I like Ancelotti's way of depending on the individual quality of players more than the system. It is the polar opposite of Guardiola. • Great vid ! So many thoughts on this ! First it looks like Fran Garcia is still too green for big games so he's putting Cama (who doesn't like it) at left back in defensive mode but as a "fifth" midfielder who sometimes hugs the touchline but also lets Vini be vini by staying wide so cama be cama and joins the center. Kroos seems to be the one used as the "pirlo" throwing long balls and dictating play he stayed deeper against napoli than tchouameni who’s maybe more used as a seedorf, doing a bit of everything in the center, while i'd say that valverde who’s less gifted technically but has more "grinta" and 3 lungs seems like a spot on Gattuso with an angel face. Of course you're right that valverde is more mobile like Seedorf and Tchoua and Cama both love defending like Gattuso : the important part being that they compliment each other perfectly they just need too smooth their play. thanks again for the vid (and great editing by the way), I'll listen to the podcast with pleasure !

Ancelotti had the opportunity to manage the first two and then he waited... and waited... The diamond only works if there's one of these players up top. Zidane would've probably won the ballon d'or under Ancelotti in 2000 had he not been handicapped by his actions in the match vs Hamburg, Kaká won it in 2007 with Ancelotti... They've also only allowed 8 goals in 10 games. 5 came in 2 games. The only loss to Atletico who run a 5-back, and the 2 to Napoli that didn't matter thanks to the offense getting 3 goals. Meaning they've only allowed 3 goals in the other 8 games played. They're a top 5 team in Europe right now with Courtois and Militao out with injuries for the season. Which is just insane.

  • There's also a lot of data backing up the comparison to Messi's false nine position under Pep in 2009 that created the best 3-4 season streak of any team and individual player in history. Fact that the heat map shows Jude'scomplete freedom and movement mostly out of the box but his shot attempts and finishes are always at the 9 position.

  • I kinda always viewed Klopps system with Mane, Firmino and Salah with Fabinho, Hendo and Wijnaldum behind as a faux diamond. Firmino was a false 9 with Salah and Mane as "wingers" that cut inside. Firmino played CAM when he played for Hoffenheim and Klopp must've seen that in him too and thus he became a true false 9 at Liverpool. It worked because of the overlapping fullbacks too. Firmino was world class and was unfairly judged as a striker when in reality, he was doing that 'Kaka' role.

Its like a new age version of Kaka, which may sound wierd as Kaka was world conquering in his peak years. Hopefully Jude stays healthy and the team grows with him and solidy themselves as world powers for many years to comes

  • Ancelotti is the greatest manager of all time because he has won the UCL 4 times, 2 of those times he played a 4-4-2 diamond as shown in this video. Imagine he created width from a system with no actual wide players. If anyone else tried such a thing, they would not win a Serie A and 2 UCLs with no natural wide players playing out wide.

    • @@ianoYG Indeed, for his age, we have saw many youngsters arrive at Madrid and be outclassed right away, the impact he has on a club of this level is immense, Szobo reminds me of one of my favourite players which being Steven Gerrard while Bellingham for me seems like a combination between Zizou and Cryuff, it's actually insane how much the youngsters mean to a club these days, Teams like United may struggle as of now, but their wonderkid aka Rasmus is still doing well for a newcomer, this will be one of the greatest generation ever, not surpassing the Ronaldo Messi era but I am sure it will be highly entertaining and worth to watch.
