  • I was waiting for a new Capablanca video in order to share with you a little story about him. I don't think Agad will see it, let alone read it, but I hope you like it. My great grandmother once played a chess game against him and won. Apparently, Capablanca and my great grandfather were friends, so one day he was visiting their house and saw a chess board there. Intrigued, he asked who played chess and was told that it was my great grandmother. So, while they were waiting for my great grandfather to get ready to leave together, they decided to play a game. Not a very serious one I presume but he lost. Funny thing is that he refused to ever again set foot in my great grandparents' house since it was "the house of a witch" in his own words. Unfortunately, I don't know the details of the game itself (and I personally suspect that he went easy on her or underestimated her, at least initially) but I find the story rather amusing nonetheless.

    • Wasn't Capablanca one those old chess players that was a dick, and thought of themselves as some otherworldly beings for being good at the game and felt insulted to loss to people? Or maybe I'm thinking of Rubenstein ¯\_(⊙_ʖ⊙)_/¯?

    • @@talphazero1036 Well maybe you are right. I really don't know much about him outside his games. Certainly, if what you say is true it appears to agree with what I tell in my story. Also, my great grandmother wasn't that kind herself either so I can easily see both of them clashing after such an innocuous incident.

He was the first person to include his losses in his own book. And once he said something like, it takes a knock on the head to snap back to senses admitting that he is overconfident at times.

The guys you listed are all definitely in the top 40 chess players of all time(not sure Steinitz would hold up as well as the others) so they'll always get the praise they deserve, so it would be nice to get some spotlight on the other greats of their time.

  • Hello, agadmator. I am a writer from Brazil and I would like to point out the quotation mark you used on the quote above the board. On Brazil (and I think it is global) we use double quotation marks ( "" ) to quote, but when there is a quote inside a quote we use only one quotation mark ( ' ). That means the correct writing should be "I can see the headlines: 'Capablanca's is getting old'". Thank you for all your dedication on producing awsome videos!

  • Capa is still my choice for greatest of all time. You put every great chess player in a time machine and bring them to the present, all in their primes, and give them as long as they need to learn the evolution the game has undergone, all new opening ides and variations, then put them all in a giant tournament of individual matches, I say Capablanca would come out on top with Carlsen and Kasparov 2nd and 3rd (either one) and probably Fischer 4th. After 4th place I can't call it.

    • There is no way greatness of these players can be compared . Every era has its advantages and disadvantages . Some would believe that Carlsen is the best , others would take sides with Kasparov , Fischer , capablanca. Its a debate and a useless one as there is no way to find who would be the greatest player of all the from all the players of their respective eras.

  • Interesting how g4 was the impressive unexpected move of this game, yet the engine said this could ultimately be refuted by ...Rxb4. The further irony is that black actually did take the b4 pawn so you just never really know how to address these pawn pushes unless you calculate perfectly.

  • This game is a Sicilian Alapin by transposition in a line that I lost horribly as black to a well prepared strong player. In this game it is frightening how easily Capablanca caused his opponent to slide into a lost position by playing moves that did not look too strong but actually required exceedingly accurate play to maintain equality.
