Shela Alteratz (nee Sion) was born in Štip, Macedonia in 1934. In April 1941, Macedonia was conquered and annexed to Bulgaria. In March 1943, Shela and her family, together with the rest of the Jews of the city, were deported to the "Monopol" factory at Skopje, where they were kept in difficult conditions. A while later Bella, Shela's sister, was allowed to leave the compound, as she was an Italian subject. Before leaving, their mother sent Shela with Bella, instructing her, "Take the child." Shela's family was later taken to the Treblinka extermination camp. Shela began a journey of wandering and hiding throughout Kosovo, during which she lived under an assumed identity. In spring 1944, Shela was arrested and imprisoned in a concentration camp for political prisoners. After liberation, she moved to Prishtina, and was later sent to an orphanage in Belgrade. In July 1949, Shela immigrated to Israel, and together with her friends moved to a Yugoslav youth movement troop at the Ein Dor kibbutz, where she met her future husband, Avraham Alteratz. In 1951 she enlisted in the army. After her discharge, she began working as a nurse at a mental hospital in Jerusalem. Shela and Avraham have three children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

  • This is one of the most touching holocaust stories. The pain of this fine lady comes through in her testimony. She suffered a lot as a child, and she lived. I’m glad she has a family and found someone to have a life with. Your testimony is meaningful and it helps people from all walks of life in current situations of difficulty. God bless you Rachela.

The Lord has truly blessed this family. Shela you were firmly in His hand the entire time. You made it through. May you always be Blessed and be Protected from harm. Always.

  • Dear Shela, i enjoyed every eord you said. This is a very detailed account of what yoy went through, sibce you were still with your dear family and later when your brave and generous mother sent you with yiur sister Bella to have another chance at life. You too are a brave person coz you could easily have lost hope, moving from family to family. I cried listening to your hard life but, thank God you are alive and enjoying a beautiful, large family. God bless you and all your family. From Malta.

  • It gives me goosebumps to think that mere hours after Bella took Shela's hand to leave Monopol, the death trains took her mom and the other prisoners to their doom. Her mom was a brave and wise woman for seizing a slim opportunity to save her child. Maybe YHWH prevented the Nazis from spotting the child.

  • my god, the bulgarians let the jewish people down so badly, all i was ever told is that no one knew exactly what was going on but in this sad story it doesn't seem so, we must never forget each and every story of this survival and pain.

  • War and hate are the most evil and tragic things, ever. WHEN will we ever learn? Still, in these "civilized" times, some people hate just because of race and culture. We are pathetic.
