  • the type of skiing we are doing this time of year. Have skied at least two of the three places shown heard. Not sure what Whittier pass is. Maybe the same as Portage pass. Good times.

  • skate skiing on frozen crust is totally crazy awesome. pick up speed galore. watch breaking thru top layer, face plant city with possible broken ski to boot. been there done that my face looked like i had a fight with a gang of wild cats. we live for these conditions. also groovy for mountain biking traction maximus. no trails needed. yo eric great videos. u puppies r having way too much joy.

  • I have a rather short bucket list with only this on it, awesome video. How often are the conditions good enough to do it? And by any chance, would you happen to know if Yukon has similar terrain anywhere for skate skiing?

    • Comments like this make my day! In Alaska, there are probably 10-15 days per year with perfect crust skiing conditions. That rarity is what makes it so special. There is this magic window when skate skiing is the absolute best way to travel in the mountains. I imagine that there are great places to go in the Yukon, but I'm not personally familiar with the area. Generally speaking, look for areas above treeline with lots of snow cover in March, April, and May. When the spring freeze-thaw cycle starts, crust will form. Warm sunny days and cold clear nights provide the best conditions. Sometimes it takes some hiking/climbing to access the crust from the road - hiking trails up to mountain valleys are generally a good place to start.

    • Eric Packer, thanks for this answer, exactly what I was wondering about. I was assuming the conditions were present mostly in the spring given the light clothes you're wearing in both videos. I'm visiting a friend in Yukon in March, which is why I was asking so I'll keep an eye open for those conditions but it looks like I may have to visit Alaska that time of year at some point. Thanks for sharing!

    • Any skate cross country ski will do! We prefer race skis because they are stiffer and provide better edge grip when the snow is icy. I personally ski on "Rossignol X-ium Premium" skate skis, but any ski will serve to get you out there.
