BIKE CAMPER Part 1 (frame)

In this video we show you how a bike camper is built. The idea and the design is from Paul Elkins. the whole construction plan can be bought on his homepage elkinsdiy.com/.
my last mobile home weighs 10 tons and is almost 9 meters long. I sold it because the big kids stopped coming. Florian and I are now building a bike camper. a micro camper which is very light and can be easily pulled by bicycle. The frame is made of wood and very easy to build. We're looking forward to the vacation. soon comes part 2 where you can see how the shell is built. thanks to polyroly.com for the very clever trailer drawbar.

  • OK, so the camper was the reason I clicked, but I have to say in my 9 years in Germany, and many weekend trips to Switzerland, I never saw a European driving an American pickup. Good to see things can change.

  • Ive been meaning to build one of these for years thank you for doing a video that looks like a complicated way to attach the camper to a bike is the demonstrated torsion resistance the only benefit

    • I was wondering about the torsion mount also. It seems unnecessary to me.

  • First of all. Let me say "Thank You" for posting videos 🎥 like this. I "do like" the construction of the trailer. Light weight. Sturdy. (Although I "am a little concerned" about the placement of it's wheels.) It seems there would be excess stress on the front. (If wheels were more to the center to balance. Or Place a third wheel in the front area. This would "increase load capacity". AND. "Stabilize" it better. But. This is just my humble opinion. You did a great job. Thanks.

  • Do you think a wooden frame weighs more than say a metal bedframe?i have heard that it's very hard to get paint to stick to coroplast but i was wondering if it was possible to use a spray on bed liner for trucks to make it more resistant to damage and to darken the color so it doesn't stand out as much...thanks

  • Nice job, just a question: what was the rationale of placing the trailer's wheels all the way back? Here, the coupling with the bike has a heavier load compared to when the wheels were centered more, and, the turning radius had been better.

    @jpdj2715@jpdj27154 жыл бұрын
    • otherwise when you want to get out the trailer ends up balancing and its very annoying.

      @NikoLetubeur@NikoLetubeur3 жыл бұрын
    • Right, you'd have to put fold out legs either side of the wheels. This way you only need to do it on one side. Also I'd say the difference in weight isn't really that significant.

    @yiteryaw@yiteryaw4 жыл бұрын
  • Cool to see someone still build a frame by wood. I'm just not sure if its a good idea to have the wheels completly at the back. That will cause a lot of weight on the towing bar and the wheel of the bike.

    @jeanyluisa8483@jeanyluisa84832 жыл бұрын
    • I assume there won't be anyone in it when he is cycling with it, so it won't be that much weight. And when he is camping in it he will probably have fold down legs at the front.

      @danhunters8226@danhunters82262 жыл бұрын
    • @@danhunters8226 Of course there is nobody in it when we is cycling with it. But if you look at the specification of many available drawbars, they are made for a load of about 4kg. Having the wheels almost in the miffle thats easy to achieve. Most bike camper have a weight of 50kg or far more. With the wheels at the back you will hhave half of that weight on your drawbar and the backwheel of your bike. That's 25kg and more instead of the rather common 4kg. When talking about the weight, we talk about the static load only. They dynamic load on a bumpy road is even much higher.

  • I’m surprised the design calls for aluminum plate to fabricate the wheel hub mounting brackets. Seems like you would get a lot of lateral deflection under load (when you are sleeping on the trailer). Can’t wait to see the finished build. Please include how much the finished trailer weighs!

Leider wird das Gesamtgewicht von dem Gespann sehr kritisch, weil die Bremsweglänge sollte schon einem üblichen Fahrrad gleichen.
