I use a graphics tablet to paint with and I can recommend this one for the price and responsiveness it's probably the cheapest of that quality as well.

tip, you can just use `mesh -> symmetrize` to have a perfect symmetrical mesh
But not many things in nature are completely symmetrical
@@itsjustlogic7232 You're literally sculpting with a mirror anyways lmao
Thank u soo much , either way (mirror or bisect) ,I was facing some weird response , thanks!!
where is.....'mesh'? :') EDIT: found it. knowin that there are different modes helps!
I'm new to blender and this is mind-blowing. Thanks
For anyone whose model was bulky/super thick or "inflated" and not thin like in the video once you used the skin modifier: In Edit Mode: >Press A to select the entire mesh >Then CTRL+A for Skin Resizing and scale as needed. -If you have CTRL+A hotkey bound to another function or anything similar, press Space Bar > Type "Skin" > It should show an option named Skin Resize
Nice work I will pin this
@@grabbitt Thank you!
super helpful ty!
Thank you... cause this guy is not a good teacher. I'm subbing your channel for blender videos.
thanks
I had a problem near the beginning. I forgot to delete the default cube and add a new, completely identical cube. Remember to do this, because the default cube doesn't have rights.

OMG i can't believe i started from scratch every time i modeled a character 🙈 ... Thank you for this handy workflow!
Thanks :)
I think it would be better to use the mirror modifier from the start, because most characters have a symmetric base shape. other than that, great tutorial
Very true
you also could select one side then select symmetrise in the object menu
Jah
how do you do that? mind explaining please?
I just wanted to say that I found blender bit daunting at first, But I can already see myself improving. All thanks to you and your tutorials. Also your voice is really chill and pleasant to listen to while modelling.
thanks :)
This tutorial is the best tip I've found so far about blender. Now I can create basically any shape like trees, chair, people so easily. Thanks so much.
1:28 leaked footage of me finishing the final details of a sculpt
haha nice :)
Nice ll
Lol
Lol
Note to self (in latest version): merging in vertices selection mode is now done by pressing M (And not ALT-M) To move vertices alone needs to enable Poly build in left side menu, or Shift-Spacebar menu To select both vertices at once needs to select one then click Shift-Ctrl and click second vertex
thank you random citizen! TwT needed that
This tutorial got me started. So grateful to you. Before, I was only sculpting spheres. Thanks so much.
Very helpful tutorial. I had no idea this one one of the ways to approach character modelling. And the vertex radius thing is a completely new concept to me so it's great to learn about that too. Thanks.
thanks :)
I've been trying to get a video about this forever, and this is the best one I've come across! NICE!!!!!
Thanks for making this. I will keep it as reference when I get down to making my own character meshes. :)
good to hear :)
6:42 you said to press 8? Mine doesn't allow me to do that. Is there any other way I could do that? Btw your tutorials are amazing!
not sure with this sorry
are you by some chance using 2.80 and emulate numpad
didnt hear him saying press 8, what's the issue with your modeling process ?
I don't think I have ever watched a tutorial by Gant and not learnt something new, the man is incredible.
Really, really useful. I started from absolute scratch, and I can't believe I made it this far... Thanks, Grant!
It's like whenever I find a great Blender video lately, I get into it and I'm all..."Hey! I recognise this voice!"....AND IT'S THIS GUY!
Thanks :)
I have found several channels that are perfect for making almsot an entire game "besides sounds and cinematic cutscenes" And this guy is one of the single best for modeling and animating. Honestly his basic videos are good but I learnt the basics and more just from watching and doing his plank sculpting video. Seriously I learnt to make textures and optimize game objects from that alone. Another video of his I learnt to draw my own damn textures! It's like hand drawn paintings on a 3d canvas, the one thing I wanted and he made a simple short video on it. I didn't need more than his videos to get started on whole projects. Then I have multiple for programming and one 24 minute video on drawing and animating in Krita which any artist should and a guy whose *FUCKING GODLIKE* in particle effects in Unity. Then Brackeys for some trivial fun stuff and very useful stuff along with new applications to Unity. He's the news channel for Unity game development
Thanks for the tutorial. I'm just stating out sculpting. Nice and easy to follow. Keep it up!
Thanks
That modifier is amazing....thanks for the easy and thorough explanation.
very helpful, I really like the calm way you teach blender, thank you
Wow this is an interesting Blender tutorial I love it.
thanks :)
Grant Abbitt You're very welcome.😊
@@grabbitt thats rly amazing

Such a great workflow and very easy to follow. No extra, uneccesary information. Right to the point. Subscribed! Great tutorial.
Thanks :)
Great tutorial; brilliant insight and tricks of the trade. Thanks so much!
Watch a tutorial. Try to do it. Failed. Close Blender. Watch another tutorial. Open Blender back. Yes, that's me everytime.
Me too.. sometimes I'm bored and close it😂
@@plutus4047 hi try to have a goal each day thats what im doing and its helping me alot and also have goal for like the end of month
Thats me. But whenever i open blender i imagine some amazing results everytime.. That boost my confidence and helps me improve more. Now i can create vfx
Dont give up i also gave up on this tutorial but i tried to handle it myself (in the sculpting the finger part) i looked at my hand and tried to copy the shape and stuff and the height and width is what really made it ideal
Chan ArtDub Tv the same
I've learnt so much from you so far, thanks a lot.
Excellent thanks :)
You were the one who gave me the confidence to start learning Blender, and you continue to educate and inspire. Thank you for the fantastic content.
that's great to hear thanks :)
This is a brilliant method! Thank you for sharing.
For the other viewers: you can also restrict the Ctrl-A inflation when you're making the basemesh, in case you cant something wider along the X-axis or Y-axis of the edge the vertex is on. So with a vertex selected, Ctrl-A X or Y (not Z, because from the vertex's point of view, the Z-axis is the edge it's on, the length of the cilinder being made, not any width). It'll save some time doing torsos or limb muscles that aren't perfect cilinders, flatten or inflate things in one direction and get a little closer to the original reference image early on.

you are doing such an amazing job because the character is so difficult and you show the right way to make it
Glad to see you are still using the metaballs and skin modifier from last Sculpt January it has been really helpful when I discovered it and shared it earlier this year. You can create a creature or human really fast from splines or connected vertices. Sculpting this way is also not polygon dense so it makes it easy to navigate and pose as well using the points or skin skeleton rig.
yes indeed i will mention about the rigging aspect in the series :) good thinking :)
1:30 Ah yes, perfect for the beetlejuice model I was workin on.
I'm not sure if this helps or not, but the way to select the loop that he was talking about at 7:03 all you do is: Go to Select Click 'Select all' (if everything is not in orange all ready) After that, Go back to Select Go to 'Select Loops' Then click 'Select Boundary Loops' I hope this helps!
I know this comment is a year old, but you're a real lifesaver! Many thanks!
Thanks for the upload, just getting into sculpting this helped a lot.
I am watching it well! and I look forward to watching various sculpt and modeling thanks !
Noob here, looking to learn. Are the modifiers ok for 3D printing? I’ve heard for 3D printing you can’t have modifiers? Can you bake the modifiers into the mesh so that it becomes the base mesh instead of the vertices with modifiers?
yes just press apply on your modifiers
Good tutorial Can you do a clothes tutorial in 2.8? cause Im having making clothes also on character designing TT
yes i will add that type of thing in later in the mean time look up my elephant armour tutorial that goes through most of the steps
@@grabbitt Thank you :D
Thanks, this one tut taught me more in a shorter time than most others. I will be sure to sub and check out the rest of your vids.
Thanks :)
Thanks Grant, I've been busy with sculpt practice so this comes at the right time.
Yes I thought I would get slightly ready for Sculpt January. Have n't completely decided if i will do it yet but we will see :)
Whenever I do Alt m it just gives me the option to do Faces and verticies. It doesnt give me any of the ones you have. I selected all the verticies too and was in edit mode
they changed it to just m
Just FYI, ALT+m does apparently no longer merge vertices, when I press it, i get "split".
just m now
Grant Abbitt still does not work. It brings u “move”
you need to do it in edit mode brother...
Arkaprabha Majumdar Yeah figured it out but thank you.
Thank you so much for this tutorial! I am working on a game project that allows customizable characters, and I was unsure how to start sculpting. Very helpful!
nice :)
Thank you very much, I found your videos one of the most useful from whole youtube!
Thanks :)
Hmm, when I add the skin modifier it doesn't fill the head with it. It just stays the 1 vertices with no filling. **edit** If you get the same issue just delete the head vertices and extrude them again from the head.
Well done for finding a fix😃
8:23 I really need to grow up... I laughed bit to hard on this one.
This tutorial is absolutely brilliant! I knew proportions and how the human body looked, but I just couldn't make the base blocking. But this tutorial just completely changed everything and thought outside of my little box.
thanks :)
The first video that show me how to apply. Thanks so much!
Is that the blender 2.8 beta?
yes. IT's definitely getting there :)
I wish there was like a lowpoly character base mesh generator in Blender
you can always import one and use it each time :)
No Just download a base mesh and import it always
I do not stop following your videos they are super well done Bravo dude you are the best 👍🏼
Thanks :)
This man has such a smooth and soothing voice
Thanks :)
Pet peeve: singular form of "vertices" is "vertex." Just a pet peeve of mine. lol
yes weirdly i know that and just end up saying odd things when recording. I think it's something to do with having dyslexia
@@grabbitt Oof. It could be related. lol But hey it happens. Don't sweat it. :P
singular of vertices is vertex.... just sayin'
A few people have beaten you to this one :) will try and fix this in future though :)
This is such a good vid, and will help with so much more than just a human mesh
Great tutorial, helped with my art project, thanks!!
