  • The entire movie is basically about a man who has lived a life of war and seen his father and brothers fall in battle. He cannot find a way to deal with his sadness. anger, shame, and sense of lost. It’s PTSD. He can’t return home to his family, and he wants to join the monastery for the wrong reasons. Peace and closure remains elusive to him.

    • it's an amazing film, I'd advise people watch the Cantonese print as Gordon's real voice was used (unusually for a Fu flick). Liu's character arc is a little rushed, doubtless due to studio pressure but I essentially love his character's transition. It's so sad what happened to Fu Sheng IRL but then again both he and his brother were acting irresponsibly so it was inevitable that something bad would come of it. I'd strongly recommend you read Terence J Brady's Fu Sheng biography - it's outstanding.

    • I'm extremely jealous, two bona fide legends. Gordon is still alive but very ill, Lau Sifu has sadly left us. I know someone who interacted with Gordon Liu when he visited the UK in the early 1990's and they said he was a lovely man, one of the nicest people they'd ever met.

  • The title is actually supposed to be "8 Triagram pole fighter" the 8 Triagrams are from the I- ching and or the book of changes which converts into 64 hexagrams. A system of divination. These are the 8 markings you see around the Yin/Yang symbol.

    • It's supposed to represent the difference between being a "savage", which Liu's character essentially is at this point and a disciplined, balanced martial practitioner. If you watch the film you'll know that the Temple purposely excludes itself from the outside world, so those monks would've been genuinely shocked by his behaviour.

    • There are two movies by Gordon liu with the same name,the 36 chamber of shaolin and return to the 36 chamber of shaolin,in the first he plays monk San tat and in the other a different carácter,he is often referred to as the master killer,also he plays San tat in disciples of the 36 chamber with xiao ho or little monkey

  • does anyone here remember this old school kung fu movie where this guy went through a series of challenges by the monks one of the challenges was he had to guess where the coin was gonna land and point or say where it landed, and he had to fight golden shaolins as he progress through the challenge, damn i dont remember the title but i really hope someone knows what movie im talking about
