China in Africa: should the West be worried?

In the past 20 years, China has built ever closer bonds with African nations. It has spent billions transforming infrastructure across the continent, and extending its influence into politics and society. It even placed its only overseas military base there. How worried should the West be?

  • It’s almost as if the West is somehow the victim here. In giving historical context you forgot to mention the role western countries played in delaying or outright fighting against African independence. When talking about Chinese miners polluting Ghana you forgot to mention how Shell has polluted & corrupted Nigeria for decades. In the section on Chinese political influence you don’t mention how Shell was deeply involved in the trial and execution of Ken Saro Wiwa in Nigeria. When you talk of Chinese military presence in Africa you conveniently don’t mention how many active US troops there are across the continent. The West has been complicit in China’s advances in Africa by their absence and disregard for the continent. Africa is a free market and everyone is welcome to throw their hat in the ring.

    • Well said. The only reason the west is concerned is because they know china is actually building tangible infrastructure in Africa instead of jut straight up exploiting the continent like they do all the time. I mean they talk about debt trap yet they loan those same countries billions in loans so they can “fund” infrastructure they know wouldn’t get built yet they turn their eyes away but still come back for those same loans with massive interest. China is going to be welcomed in Africa so long they keep building infrastructure and assets.

    • Just like they always deny some western countries came to China, to India, to Asia, to “colonize” us all. How many Asian countries didn't have a history of being invaded by western military powers in history, I wonder. “Colonize” here is a nice word to replace all crimes made. 🤔

Once Africa received the money, they can never repay these loans from the west as there is no infrastructure to help Africa improve their economy. You can build a factory with empty hands! You need roads and railways to transport products to ports for export to make more income for the country. This is where the west loans never helped Africa.

As China advances into Advanced Manufacturing, more jobs are on the Africans Way but but they need to make sure that They Too can benefit from the Globalisation of The Trade. There are so many countries in the world vying for markets around the globe but it is in the hardwork and determination as well as aspirations of billions of Africans who will help them transform from an Underpriviledges class of ethnicities to the most Priviledged Class in the World. The west sees Africa as a charity case which cannot function without them. As Africans we are smart enough to see the difference and welcome any nation that wants to hold hands and develop together. With china’s wealth of infrastructure knowledge and socialist nature, it translates well to the African continent. Deals made on our terms that benefit both China and Africa will always be welcome! Africa is not a charity case and we are not helpless, we don’t need protection from the west, in fact it would benefit us more if we drove the west out of Africa completely. And today every Ghanaian wants to work there because they pay around $2000 a month. Most companies in the country pay less than $500 and some as low as below $100 a month. Tulow and Cosmos oil have been in Ghana since 2007, they haven’t bothered building a small refinery for us. They take the oil, pay our governments it's due share and keep the rest. Is that also not exploiting?

At least that‘s what we get taught in school in Switzerland, but I do think Europeans generally lack empathy for the African people and the Asian people. They can be racist and ignorant, however, Asians and Africans can do the same. So just because Europeans are not involved does not mean there can not be tension. I think getting more engaged as Europeans in a productive way would be cool and if China helps developing Africa and does not hold them back that would be great. The video also ends with the conclusion that they maybe should start caring more. I do think Africa has a lot of potential.

I don't really understand the dynamics and complexities of economics, but hold the view that most continents have commodities that others need or want, thus, the need for fair trade that benefits both ends. I personally can't use Africas gold in any meaningful way.......it's of no value to me. The reality is:- the world needs Africas (among others) resources, and Africa needs things imported from the world like food, beverages and manufactured goods. So with the consent of both sides, a trade deal that's fair again should benefit both sides.

Around 5 million innocent Vietnamese and 6 million Cambodian citizens died due to the direct and indirect effect of war. Since the Qing Dynasty, we have been beaten and looked down upon because China is lagging behind. Cheaper railways and infrastructure etc. West isn’t doing it because they want Africans to stay a charity region, and China want stronger Africa economically and militarily . Keep in mind China is not a welfare organization or non profit organization. They are doing business to gain profit and influence and in return Africa will get developed and change their lives. West doesn’t see Africa as a successful countries. They don’t even consider them humans. They want to keep Africans poor so they would never know how to process their own resources. Example they want to keep buying cocoa and make produce chocolate in their own countries like Germany and France . They don’t want Africa to process chocolate themselves and sell chocolate to west. • One simple question from a citizen of the world : When the west, which occupied and colonized the entire African continent for centuries was at its zenith from 1960s to the 2010s, what did it do to assist Africa? It was involved in more wars to exploit the resources but no real effort was made to help African progress.. China could not help much in for a while as well, except to help build a rail system in Zambia even while it was impoverished. When China started to assist more starting from the 1990s, Europe got alarmed. Why ? You Europeans didn't give Africa a thought, much less any useful assistance for decades. And yet when others started to get involved, your politicians started to smear and make accusations. You didn't help for a long time and now you're trying to stop others from helping? And you call yourselves Christians? Where were you when needs were unanswered for decades? Why didn't you extend your hand to help? Now you're worried others might do what you've done for centuries and you're casting others in your own mindset and ideology. Don't stay callous. Act like Christians.

When the western colonizers left they where simply replaced by corrupt african leaders who could now fill their pockets or conflict broke out. And keep in mind China is building your infrastructure with Chinese companies and labor. Little knowhow is being transferred so after the bare hanging fruit is plucked by building infrastructure can Africans than grow businesses by themselves?

  • Zeis Siez: "My country Malaysia traded with China since two thousand years ago, China never colonized us. When they wanted something from us, they traded with us. In 1511 the Portuguese came, in 1642 the Dutch came, in 1786 the British came, we were colonized by each, one after another. When the US Foreign Secretary Rex Tillerson traveled to Africa in 2018 to warn African nations against working with China, he landed in an airport built by China, then he traveled on a road built by China, before he arrived in a hall built by China. And he told the people: “Do not work with China”. When African countries deal with China, they get tangible assets. Assets like roads, water treatment, railways, communication networks which allow African countries to develop their economies. When Africa countries deal with the West, their public assets need to be privatized before any further talks, otherwise they are dismissed by given a lecture on human rights. After privatization, these assets are controlled by foreign capitalists. And if the country has oil, American capitalists like George Soros would attack the economy, IMF and World Bank would come and give the loan, and Exxon/BP/Shell would take the oil. And if the country has oil and the leaders have big ambitions, e.g. Gaddafi’s pan-African currency and Saddam Hussein’s refusal to use dollar in oil trades, bombs made by Raytheon would be dropped in the countries, the leaders would be killed, then US companies would be moved in to “rebuild” the country, the IMF and World Bank would come and give the loan, and Exxon/BP/Shell would take the oil, and nothing is built. After China came to Africa, finally the US and friends “cares” about Africa. In 2021 G7 Summit, the US slapped themselves in the face by announcing the “Build Back Better World”(B3W) plan to “compete” with China. One year later, nothing was built. Instead, in the following year, in 2022 G7 Summit, the US announced the “Partnership for Global Infrastructure and Investment” (PGII), another political mouthpiece to “compete” with China. The fact is the US and France in particular never wanted to see African countries develop, Africa should continue to provide low cost labor to the West."

That statement is by itself ridiculous because 1. African countries are not beggars or children that require the charities of the west which by the way have never disclosed how much money is made and how much is given away. And 2. • I'd be inclined to compliment you on this piece, if you weren't trying to paint China as the villain. It's a transactional relationship with everything that entails. I've yet to see a similar video on Western powers, but I'm guessing that doesn't benefit your narrative.

  • Chinese are doing what no western company or government is willing to do in Africa and for Africans. The West has always seen Africa as a second class continent with second class persons not worthy of development. The Chinese are dealing with Africans as equals and most importantly as people with development ambitions that are worth of being developed. May be the West should also try to support Africa’s development on an equal footing as partners in development.

    • The west never saw Africa as 2nd class continent . It was always either 3rd class or 4th class . They have banned sl*very but the behaviour always remained. The west would never help any country unless in exchange of huge resources. Their so called military-peace missions is just on purpose of selling weapons and looting .

  • I can't see any issue with the new wave of FDI in Africa. It's not like the west hasn't exploited the continent at every opportunity over the centuries. The CAP and insurmountable debt compounded by currency parity are some modern examples. China has simply taken the 'trade not aid' slogan and ran with it. Meanwhile the east has become interdependent and independent from it's colonial past and why not? A lack of credible alternatives and overpopulation have made it inevitable imo. Of course, there is a learning curve when it comes to the environment, but it's not like a modern industrial revolution hasn't been on the cards since the turn of the century. Innovation is it's own phenomenon and the west will be caught dragging it's heels in the near future. The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few.

    • It’s actually pretty interesting that this video specifically talks about how China had given loans to other African countries, but no one (or very few people) mentions that during the 2009 Financial Crisis it was China who bailed out two European Union countries (if not more), and that the two largest banks of China have been giving out more loans in the past decade than the World Bank itself. That speaks a lot about why the West always complain, yet it doesn’t act. President Macron once asked why did Portugal took a loan from the Chinese, and the Portuguese prime-minister said “There was no one else willing to take up the loan, so we did what we had to.”. The West lost its powers only because they lacked vision and failed to see outside of their box. It may seem like a lie, but the world will be better with China and the US (and in the future, surely, other countries) as superpowers. At that time, no country will have to appease anyone. Each country plays their own cards and plays their own hand, and no one will interfere.

    • I agree with with in the WHOLE. Though I would emphasise that the Belt and Road Initiative is the ONLY credible DEVELOPMENT strategy out there. The West approach was DISCREDITED even the IMF and World Bank itself as far back as the 1980s . The current proposal "Build back better "is uncosted and is in political trouble in the US Congress. Therefore HOW can the West claim it's a serious partner in ANYTHING?!!
