Captain Nemo (1975) Photo tests of actors

Almost 50 years ago, the premiere of “Captain Nemo” took place, directed by Vasily Levin, based on the works of Jules Verne “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea” and “The Steam House”. In addition to Vladislav Dvorzhetsky, Mikhail Kozakov tested for the main role of Captain Nemo, but in the end Dvorzhetsky was approved (according to one version, Kozakov and Levin did not find a common language and saw the character differently). Yuri Rodionov was approved for the second main role (Professor Aronnax). At that time, he already had extensive experience in filming (he had played more than a dozen diverse roles).
By the way, in Jules Verne’s book the professor did not have a wife, but in the film they decided to add one. The professor's wife was played by Marianna Vertinskaya. Harpooner Ned Land was played by Vladimir Talashko. He came up with many details of the character himself. For example, a scar on his face, which made the character even more stern and courageous, a sweater that the harpooner wore, and much more. If we compare it with the works of Jules Verne, then it was Ned Land performed by Talashko who turned out to be most similar to the character from the original source.
The film was shot at the Odessa Film Studio. Almost all the scenes on the ships and inside the Nautilus were filmed on a soundstage. Views of the sea, sunsets and even ships were filmed in the film studio pool using mock-ups. Among the location shootings, we can only highlight the shooting of the wedding of Professor Pierre Aronnax (filmed against the backdrop of the Arcadia sanatorium), as well as several general views that were filmed in the Crimea. Scenes in which the film's characters walk along the seabed were also filmed on the pavilion, without the actual dive. The seabed scenery was laid out around the actors, they were put on costumes, and an aquarium with fish was placed in front of the camera lens. Thanks to the high-quality work of the cameramen and editing experts, it seems that the characters are really walking along the seabed.
The film premiered on January 25, 1975. It has become very popular for several reasons. Firstly, the works of Jules Verne were very popular, secondly, very popular actors starred in the film, and thirdly, the genre of adventure films itself, and even with a bunch of special effects, has always attracted a lot of attention from movie lovers.
