  • yea the tier list was a bit predicable but it makes sense. i will say that GoW 2018 is alot more replayable if you have new game+ as that allows you to skip "cutscenes" and get right into the full form of combat but i do agree wtih its problems. personally like 3 a bit more then 2 simply because it really is a great ending with the setup provided by 2 making it feel so much better.

  • GoW 2 will always be my favorite mainly due to it being my introduction into the series. GoW 3 is probably the one I've replayed the most, but you know what they say, your first time will always be the most special.

    • as someone who has a PS5 and even replayed 2018 on it. the game feels ALOT better on it. it really is a big difference and if you want the best experience then i highly recommend playing it not on a ps4. for this game having double the framerate truly makes a difference.

God of War 2 Can't say i'm judging it like you but the feeling of Destroying the Olympus and brutally killing the rest of the gods was awesome (i held hermes upside down for like a minute), i love the paternal-like story of Dad of Boi (i would cry at the end if i had a dad) and God of War 2 because i didn't play the rest and yeah, it plays better than 1, also i think it had more erotic stuff and i played it at 12 yo, i was very curious lol love your videos.

  • As for the other games I actually put 3 on the same level as Chains. For all the improvements of 2 that carried over to 3, it was dragged down by all the weapons feeling same-y minus the Cestus that came later, the same general aesthetic across all environments that made things all the more monotonous when you needed to backtrack through them, the battle items like the bow and Hermes' boots not adding much of anything to combat, the (however intentional) behavior of Kratos being even more off-putting than usual, etc. really rubbed me the wrong way. Chains had a greater level of visual consistency than the original, where parts of the Hydra section are still the single ugliest things in the series (aside from maybe the facial animation of the Gravedigger in one of Ghost of Sparta's cutscenes). I give it a bit more of a pass because it was the first game on new hardware with more limited controls, but there's no denying that it's definitely one of the least impressive games in the series. Though, in addition to some of the story aspects, I've got to give credit to the game for actually being the first game in the series to hint at other cultural mythologies in gameplay. God of War II had the 3 wise men journeying to Jesus visualized on one of the walls in 2 and some creatures like the Phoenix were appropriated. But the Efreet in Chains was the first time another culture legitimately clashed with the existing pool of mythological entities because it was wielded by an invading Persian army leader. It was the first hint of larger-than-life mythological entities and warriors coming to blows with Kratos, and you got a sweet hellfire-spewing demon magic attack out of it nearly a *DECADE* before Dad of Boi explored Norse mythology (albeit obviously with greater depth and intent.) The original sits in the middle for me. Being the most character-focused and narratively-minded game of the Greek era games. Things like characters reacting to Kratos' presence, the fall from loyal servant of the Gods to a maddened shell of a man in Pathos Verdes III, and the human sacrificial chamber serving as world-building reminders of the Gods' apathy and cruelty, the moments of quiet reflection from puzzles that let narrative aspects sink in and provide a breather from the combat without feeling flow-breaking, the pretty water effects, the reflections in the water and polished floors that not even 2 had all good stuff. ...But of course, being the oldest game in the series means that it also has some of the most antiquated and unfinished design aspects that bog the game down at times, particularly when it came to the platforming. 2 and Ghost of Sparta are the ones that always compete for the top for me. Both are visually beautiful to the point of being *dumbfounding* when considering the hardware limitations and previous games and the little visual details that you can find here and there never cease to delight. 2 had the least substantial character growth in the franchise, but the story was not inconsequential, there was more variety in gameplay, the camera and magic system had been polished to a fine sheen, and it features one of my favorite boss fights in video games *Period.* And the sub-weapons are probably still the most diverse yet balanced and distinct in the entire goddamn series. The Blades of Chaos have great range, decent power, and can yield health orbs. The Barbarian's Hammer has shortER range but can still hit enemies further away with specific attacks, does bone-crushing damage, yields rage orbs, and you can circumvent the inability to dodge by quickly switching weapons a fraction of a second before doing so, the Spear of Destiny is a bit weaker than the Blades but has longer range, effortlessly juggles enemies, and yields magic orbs, and the Blade of Olympus is a straight-up upgrade to the Barbarian's Hammer in just about all respects while yielding XP orbs, but you don't get it until New Game+, you still have to upgrade it for it to reach its full potential rather than just dropping it in your hands and have it function exactly the same as in the final battles with Zeus. On the other hand, it's definitely single-minded in its approach. There's not much time for reflection and changes of pace. It's not a _bad_ thing at all, but it definitely feels more one-track in nature. Another interesting question could be begged regarding the Sisters of Fate. That being: Do they actually *_control_* fate, or is their "mastery" over time just an impression they want others to get? Of course, they have the threads of fate and mirrors that act as gateways, they certainly have the *capacity* to _influence_ time. ...But do they *actually* orchestrate events? Or have they been pretending to pass judgment as their will when in reality, they fear altering events? It's worth noting that it's when Kratos goes back to kill *_Zeus_* the temple starts to crumble, not zapping the Titans out of the past. It's possible that while they can influence *SOME* things, certain events *WILL* play out a certain way no matter what, and any attempt to change them results in the loss of their power, or destruction of the mirrors or something. It begs the question, are the oracles who see the future seeing a *definitive* future, one that cannot be changed? This would explain why the sisters tried to kill Kratos themselves rather than just go back and gut his mom before he was born; they were worried about losing the illusion of having dominion over time and becoming subservient to the Gods of Olympus. Or maybe they *_DID_* change fate, but the more they did it, the more their power faltered, to the point where they realized that if they tried to continue to change fate in their favor they'd lose their power altogether/were worried about greater consequences. Hence, Clotho's warning Kratos to "not tamper with destiny." Ghost of Sparta is a bit more monochromatic in each of its environments but goes to several different ones throughout the game so that you won't get sick to death of them, the combat is surprisingly deep especially since it's a handheld title, the story is much stronger than in 2, the final tag-team battle with Deimos, while not as satisfying gameplay-wise as the clash with Lakhesis and Atropos is still cathartic as hell to see Kratos and Deimos working together to kick colossal coccyx. The magic is nowhere near as cool as 2 but the fire blades mechanic is fantastic for reasons I will touch on later. The slow walk moments also felt much more earned in Ghost of Sparta than in Ascension. For example, the walk toward the false representative of the oracle happened just moments after meeting the guy. The same happens in the Spartan Prison but the dissenter attributes his release to the will of Ares, releases a lion to kill you, and constantly praises Ares while denouncing Kratos' godhood. Plus, with him just being a mortal with no powers, you really feel the sense of intimidation and power Kratos carries, while the oracle representative had goddamn superpowers. Going back to the fire, the thing about Ghost is that unlike Ascension it *rewards* skillful play rather than _demanding_ precision. You *CAN* just square, square, triangle fire everything... but you have to wait much longer for the meter to recharge. You can hold square to have the searing cor effect applied right away... but you lose out on damage in the process and you're vulnerable to attacks in the meantime. Making the most tactically viable option to reserve applying fire to *_parry_* attacks to get the most damage with the least expended resources. It makes certain options more *costly* to perform, rather than denying the option outright like the combo-dependent system in Ascension. On the parry side of things, you *CAN* just try to muscle through certain encounters like those bitches that burrow into and leap _from_ the ground, taking lots of damage and relying on luck in the process... Or you can study their moves, know when they're going to leap out or use their parryable distance attack. The game forces you to learn and utilize the more skill-oriented aspects of its mechanics through the *enemies* and _limitations_ rather than just blocking off entire move options and arbitrarily screwing with the parry system like in Ascension. That's what I feel Ascension lacked the most, and what makes Ghost of Sparta's combat so satisfying despite its limitations. It should also be noted that it is nonetheless unfortunate that the ports of Ghost of Sparta (or at least the PS3 version) didn't have the option for classic GoW controls so that you wouldn't accidentally dodge when you were trying to just block. I mean, you can dodge with the right stick, but there's no option to turn off dodging by holding block and having the left stick pointed in a direction. There's also the 180-heel turn with Deimos going from despising Kratos and trying to beat him to death and fighting to the death *alongSIDE* him? It seems like the gauntlet may have been fueling his rage given his reaction to its destruction or something, but it's an absurdly abrupt turn that I wouldn't blame anyone for leaving an insurmountable bad taste in their mouth. However, The moments where Kratos confronts a younger version of himself and lines like *_"I_* should've saved him..." also give insight into Kratos' humanity and the extent to which he blames and even hates himself for the things he does/does not do. The clash of the firey red volcano erupting and raining death on the cool blues of Atlantis is still one of the most gorgeously striking visuals I've ever seen in the series. The somber walk with Deimos' body and subsequent contemplation at the suicide bluffs, and so many other sad, invigorating, majestic, and just plain awesome things in the game make me say that Ghost of Sparta is probably my favorite.

  • I've only played through the Greek games (minus the cell phone game for obvious reasons). To my mind, Ascension is easily the worst thing in the series. Not merely "not as good", but straight-up, legitimately, *terrible.* I love the Juggernauts, the visuals are great, and the story's not bad... but it's all made *awful* by the _combat._ The problems are 3-fold: 1) The game locks like half/the strongest moves behind a combo counter, which just so happens to be the slowest and riskiest moves to use. So, with your increased effectiveness being dependent upon *NOT* getting hit... why would you ever use them? Answer: You wouldn't. 2) The very first upgrade you get is Ares' Fire, whose special attribute is... increasing the speed with which you build up the meter that makes your attacks innately stronger. And because it's the first thing you get, it also has the benefit of being upgraded further earlier. So, what gameplay incentive is there to use anything else? Answer: There isn't. and perhaps most importantly, 3) The game gives a tangibly noticeable upgrade to the Plume of Prometheus whenever you get the meter filled. My problem with all this is that it is the quintessential *embodiment* of "just play square, square, triangle, hurrr!" that ironically cropped up long before this game. Compared to even the original, you'd use things like Spirit of Hercules to risk a nasty hit for the sheer powerful damage of the move, you'd grab enemies for a quick takedown or swing them around, or run into a thick of enemies to get off a useful parry. You created your own variety because failure didn't make you less effective in combat, just a little more bruised. But in Ascension, you're actively *PUNISHED* for doing those kinds of things. You can't even *TRY* to use the Hercules combos because they're not *available,* you can't parry as easily because they -Titaned- tightened the window to make it more difficult and leave you vulnerable if you fuck up, you can't risk getting close to enemies because the slightest screw-up can reduce your combat effectiveness. As if all that weren't enough, the items in Ascension are a joke. While in previous games you had to weigh the consequences of using Magic if you came up to a stronger enemy with low magic reserves, here you just spam the items incessantly in every encounter. Yes, you could do something similar in GoW III, but the items were never as _necessary_ as they were in Ascension. The cloning item *alone* that distracts some enemies in combat makes an already mindless system even *more* dumbed down. Which is ironic given that all of this was clearly done to make the game more skillful and tactically challenging. And because battlefield weapons are finite and never a permanent part of the arsenal, you can't get an accurate feel for how good/bad any of them are, to the point where they might as well have not existed in the first place. With the used needle on top of the biohazardous waste-covered shit-sundae of gameplay being the camera's assistance on panning absurdly far back to the point where I literally had no clue what was going on in certain combat engagements, purely for the sake of showing off the scale to the detriment of the gameplay. This all culminated in an experience where, for the first time in the entire *series,* I saw only one course of action in the vast majority, if not _all_ combat engagements: Spam Plume of Prometheus from a distance and use items as soon as their cooldown is up. That's it.

  • i feel like I can be honest here, rather then see people trip over themselves Ragnarok, is less 'fun' for me then Dad of Boy and gow3 will always be the best part. I understand where the story went with Dad of Boy, and I can forgive that. The lesser gore, the less brutality, the sort of 'stumbling to learn how to walk again' aspect. I was hoping Ragnarok would get the same GoW3 treatment. Immense return to brutal godkilling, Kratos becoming who he was when Calliope was alive and not being tricked by Ares. But we got...something else. Not a bad game, but i won't be replaying Ragnarok, even if NG+ is post patch introduced

    • SEMI SPOILERS FOR RAGNARÖK!!! I feel like you were expecting something that was never going to happen. Character wise Kratos would never go back to his old ways, unless something were to happen to Atreus, but by the end of the game even that may not entirely sway Kratos to his old ways. Kratos simply is not the same person as he was during GoW3 and frankly i'm not really sure why you were expecting him to be that way again after the end of GoW3 and the last game especially.

      @theokayishgamer@theokayishgamer Жыл бұрын
    • @@theokayishgamer I have had this argument WAY to much and I'm tired of rehashing what i said over and over. Long story short, maybe I was expecting too much. But the concept of the story has and always was "killing gods". I mean the entire thing of GoW1 is killing Ares. I am not saying i want the same 'murder machine' because i understand the character is growing. But people need to stop this argument of "there was no depth to Kratos" since fatherhood. Also Barlog's statement on 'this family is nr 1" in regards to faye and atreus vs Calliope and Lysandra is a major slap in the face. I'm not saying bring back the treesome minigame. I'm not saying bring back the GoW3 rage machine that offered people to walk away but they didn't offer him a chance. I am saying I was expecting that a certain god to get the Hermes treatment. But he got of WAY to easy. I also don't like how the game takes away one of the most anticipated kills I had in a LONG time in videogames, hoping to (if not Poseidon) at least Hephaestos this...god (i'm trying to be criptic and not give away spoilers) and take the shocking armerment for our own. And I also felt robbed about the final boss of the game. WAY robbed. Even Baldr, who was 'saved' by the cutscene, at least died in the cutscene maybe I am indeed expecting too much or too 'regressed' much from this game. But I was real hyped for fighting a few of the Norse gods, and the worst I got was again, the not quite hermes treatment, which was way to soft for what it should be

      @LightingbladeShen@LightingbladeShen Жыл бұрын
    • @@LightingbladeShen Again SEMI SPOILERS FOR RAGNARÖK!!! But that's my point. Kratos is no longer the same person that would brutally murder someone (well not to the same level anyways), he's just not. I think that Heimdall's death was done well, it showed a very small glimpse into Kratos' old self, but at the same time showed that he's moved past that by him not going fully in. It should also be mentioned that unlike with the greek gods, Kratos doesn't really have a personal grudge against any of these gods. The worst thing any one of them does to him is probably Heimdall telling him he'd gut Atreus and Kratos kills him. So again, i don't really get why you would expect him to go actively god-killing mode in this one, when the previous game made it clear that he doesn't want to do that nor does he want to be his old self again. As for Thor, i'm somewhat mixed on him. With leaning towards liking how things ended with him. I also guessed that Thor would not die, or at least not by Kratos' hands before i played the game. Thor was a mirror to Kratos in a lot of ways including similar backstories (with less family killing though), which i liked and i do like that their last fight shows how far Kratos has come, but at the same time Mjölnir would've been cool to get. Odin's boss fight i will say is a bit anti-climactic but i also don't really have strong feelings towards it. Odin wasn't as strong as Zeus for example because Odin was always more of a schemer than a fighter so it makes sense he's not that big of a threat in a direct fight against someone like Kratos (especially with Atreus and Freya by his side). I did like how Atreus dealt with him and i liked how Sindri finished him for good.

      @theokayishgamer@theokayishgamer Жыл бұрын
    • @@theokayishgamer And I'm saying that while the story makes that make sense, it's not at all what some of us wanted. A level headed Kratos is fine and all, but this is like making a DMC game and making Dante, serious and not his charming self (which is when we get Donte and Vergin). SO story wise, sure that makes sense, but it still feels like a cop out. Especially when you have him rip off heads, split bodies and chain tear the jaws of off animals, einherjar etc, yet the worst the gods endure, is a missing arm grudge or no grudge, the fact that in the story the Boy does the thing and causes Kratos to seek out the Norns also rubbed me wrong, because Kratos has killed people for doing lesser then what these three jokers pulled. And yet he lets them go, because mature? Sorry but no. He is matured and a father now, sure, but he's also a soldier and a warrior. Kratos (mature or not) does not tollerate disrespect. And maybe that's just me, but I really wanted to go to war with those witches why go godkilling? Lets see...Odin threatened his family, Thor actively sought to fight and kill him, Heimdall....is heimdall. One of these he kills, the other two are either Killstolen by the other god and the last one is 'mercifully' put to sleep before Sindri (and while that's nice cause of the whole...dinner debacle, I wanted that Kill. Not a cutscene Sindri) It's a cop out. I get 'story wise' and 'for the sake of my son' stuff. But taking the hammer, added that with the arsenal of the other 3, that'd be cool. Like why wouldn't Kratos take it? He could wield it. Same with the Horn, he took the horn (yes story purpose) but kratos has always taken stuff from his kills. Hermes' boots, Hades" claws, Hephaestos'...sparkle...knive...chain..things i'm not talking about the battle. Yes Odin's not a powerhouse like Zeus, and designing a bossfight in regards to a schemer is...not something many game devs do right nowadays. not saying it can't be done, but the bossfight with odin could be more...involved. It's the copout. Like THor earlier, it's a cutscene that saves/kills him. And I as a eprson do not like that. I worked on depleting that HP bar fair and square, but then sindri gets the glory?
